This one is easy - it'll be that it is the base model. Personally I'm most likely going to want all the "Pro" features but in this size. I think I'll take the smaller size than the pro benefits, but I wish I didn't have to choose...

Exactly. There is no reason that they couldn't design the smallest iPhone and then just scale the screen and battery. Then remove the expensive stuff and drop the Pro label.

I have my doubts about getting the 5.4” iPhone 12, or waiting to the rumored port-less 5.5” iPhone 13. Why? Because iPhone 13 will have (reportedly):

- Much better cameras, with nearly 50MP and a revolutionary new technology
- LTPO Screens to allow always-on displays
- Probably a much faster A15 SoC, built on the same 5nm but probably with an all new architecture to diferentiate it from the iPhone 12
- Due to not having a port, the battery can be bigger, thus, better batter life.

On the other hand, I don’t want a port-less iPhone because I like to plug it in to charge while I’m using it, and because I like to perform clean installs of iOS (DFU Restores) and I doubt I will be able to do this on a port-less iPhone. So... What would you do?
What are the benefits of clean install/DFU restore? I do a regular restore with new phone from a backup Which I believe is fresh iOS but bringing back some of the “crud” living in my data. Too much a hassle to select and reload all my apps individually, and set up apps again, so I live with the crud. how bad is crud build up if I get a new iPhone every year?

The weight of all current iPhones is tremendous! My SE1 is only 113 gr, the 11pro is 188 gr. Hopefully the 5.4" comes with modest weight.

It's not the width of 11pro that bothers me, it's the excessive height, the soapy feeling, the weight and the ugly black bezel (black even with silver body).

I could not agree more.
Concerning the weight, I think Apple will make it relatively thick to fit in a big battery. On the other hand, we have the advantage concerning density of aluminum, which I think they will use for the 5.4" model. The Pro models will use stainless steel again, which tremendously adds up to overall weight of the device.

I all ready pulled my mask down to get into the screen I am using it for a minute and want to go to a website. It requires a password, and you would know have to re-authenticate.

Obviously false ranting removed.

Voila!

Since this is rumored to be a non-Pro model, what are we expecting this to lack over the Pro models?

- LiDAR: Don’t care, feel like they’ll make a big deal out of this during the keynote, much like AR, and then be a novelty gimmick that’s fun in an app for 5 minutes, much like AR
- 5G: All models are rumored to have 5G, but there’s two uhhh... modes (?), with the Pro models expected to have shortwave or something. Don’t care either, LTE is good enough for my uses
- Camera: This one will hurt me quite a bit. Might be a good excuse to go back to my actual cameras, though
- Aluminum/Stainless Steel: Aluminum is lighter so that’s a win for me
- OLED: All models are rumored to have OLED this year

exactly, by increasing the size thanks to shrinking the bezels would be an statement, but this way...its irrelevant, makes the phone just bigger and even harder to handle...keeping the footprint by reducing the bezels and notch, we could got way more top room for more icons, like dnd, alarm etc

Keep in mind iOS 14 brings widgets this year too, which will change the way people organize their screens, so the dimensions are even more important this year.

Apple probably figured out that there will be more people paying for a cheaper, non-pro small phone than an expensive, small pro phone. This phone will allow them to have a lower entry price for a current gen iPhone. They may have correlated data from uptake of the last two generations of iPhone.

Pretty sure that “not buying cause it’s non-pro” would be the line now, but chances are you’re too small a customer base.

It’s a pity that this model won’t be a pro model. But in any case, my wallet is ready for this.

How would it possibly be the pro model though, if the pro model has more tech inside of it? More tech requires more space

I'm so confused about the model lineup I think I'm going to play it safe and just stick with the one I have.

Kidding, but seriously Apple. We don't need a dozen iPhones a fraction bigger or small than the next

My opinion is 3 is enough

Pro, Pro Max, SE

MAYBE even 2 would be fine

Pro/Max

You're wrong. This allows them to grab all aspects of the market. Last year they tested the market with the iPhone XR (which was a large phone at a low price point), and it did very very well. Now they're continuing that success by providing a smaller version and larger version of that same line/phone. Which is the entire reason that people are excited about having a small form factor, SE successor. Last year's line up alienated those people.

If the 5.4 inch iPhone 12 is priced at the rumored $649 for 128GB storage, they will not be able to keep them in stock.

The 11 is larger than the 11 pro becuase it is not OLED. Non-OLED screens require more space so likely a design decison.

I think for the 12 they are all going to be OLED.

Only thing about this I don’t like is it won’t be the pro.

I don't think that's accurate. I think only Pro's will have OLED this year (based on my memory of leaks throughout the year). But also, the iPhone 7 and 8 were both LED, and they are larger than the rumored 5.4" non pro phone.

Looks like a a winner - pretty excited although I did get a 2020 SE when it was released. I just want the best smallish phone I can comfortably use one handed.

What's confusing is we're looking at the physical sizes of the phones, but I think referring to the phones by their screen sizes. The newer phones obviously have smaller bezels and come out with a larger screen specification which might skew how we evaluate them. So a smaller phone might technically have a larger screen size which would be beneficial.

Pretty much every leak so far this year has said all iPhone 12 models will be OLED, I’d be very surprised if they don’t tbh

Is it like a painful root canal procedure for Apple to make the "pro" version at that size?
I have the money and intention to buy the pro, but I don't have the huge size of a hand that it requires.

Agreed. So far the only feature that's up in the air is the 120hz ProMotion display for Pro models. Some rumors say none will get it this year because Apple is waiting to for LTPO OLED screens. Other rumors say only the 6.7" Pro Max will get it this year.
