That iPad "pro" is a mess. Usb2, 2gb ram, protruding camera. The price cut on the air 2 looks better to me now.
Wait for the iPhone 7 Plus Pro, now that'll be a real mess
Live Photos have always worked on all iPhones.....only the 6S and now SE Can actually take themHere is some more hypocrisy from Apple.
So they intro an iPhone 6S/+ which includes 3D Touch. Many have argued it's just a long tap/hold press. But no it's more than that. OK. So those animated gifs aka Live Photos require iPhone 6S series to work right. You have to hard press the screen so they move. They can't be done on an iPhone 6 or below. Because it's a 3D Touch requirement.
Now they have the same recycled iPhone 5S aka iPhone SE releasing that DOES have support for Live Photos. In fact all you do is tap and hold the screen. WTF? So does this work for all the iPHones now? Tap and hold for Live Photos? I guess they really mean the iPHone SE can TAKE Live Photos with the camera so that's why it can use Live Photos.
This is just stupid marketing fluff again. The 3D Touch was nothing I thought was awesome or must have. In fact I can see how tap and hold works the same way. But it's only OK if Apple does it because hey they said so. Look at the same thing F.Lux app does that night shift copied. SAME THING. But F.lux isn't allow while Apple is ok. Same with the iPhone 4 shutter button using volume key back in the day. Apps that use the volume keys for a shutter button is a NO-NO; but later Apple implements this and it's all of a sudden awesome.
Apple is full of crap.
Yes, I do. Let me point out an example of a high end video game. If you have a better graphics card and more RAM, you have a different experience. There isn't a different version of the game for low and high end devices. There is a bare minimum (say, 2gb of RAM) and extra features for people with more power. That's how programming works. That's how programming has always worked.
Seriously. The sky isn't falling. Nothing will change with the way apps are programmed and things are already being updated to take advantage of the 2 in the Air 2 and the 4 in the 12.9" Pro.
The under-clocking will not be noticeable. In fact it will probably be more responsive it has so many fewer pixels. Also, Apple always are super-stingy with RAM. I bet they didn't want to put 4GB in the larger pro, but as the devices don't have separate video RAM, all those extra pixels probably required it.
The SE is a hell of a phone. If only the iOS team were doing such good work.
You are correct.
Though developers have to take into account that a video card can have more ram and utilise that ram to provide a better experience, that takes resources and time.
Hence someone running the same app on a 4GB model can have a better experiece , even with simple tasks as opening tabs.
The sky falling in is not apps, it's apps performing worse on the 9.7 cause apple decided to limit it too 2GB.
After the debacle of 1GB ram in my iPhone 6 Plus, I would never touch this iPad , knowing that apps will run a lot smoother on the 12"
Regarding the iPhone SE, as it has the same CPU and the same amount of RAM as the iPhone 6s, it might even be the most powerful iPhone ever made! Granted it doesn't have 3D Touch and the second-generation Touch ID but it's a 4-inch powerhouse!!
Actually I think there isn't a single app with 4 Gb requirements...Almost no app developer will target the very tiny 4GB memory iDevice market. No matter how you put it, early adopters have been screwed unless they really really wanted a bigger screen.
There is no iPad on sale with less than 2 Gb RAM as of today (I'm not considering the mini 2).I guess Phil did his upsell job then...will probably get a bonus for it.
Underclocking of the processor is probably for battery/heat reasons and something nobody would notice if it wasn't pointed out to them. But lack of RAM is absolutely noticed and I would never buy another iPad with less than 2GB RAM.
I don't think anyone is complaining about 2GB RAM per se, but that the 9.7 Pro has 2GB rather than 4GB. The 9.7 Pro feels like a half-step between the Air 2 and 13 Pro rather than being a proper alternative to the 13 Pro.Let's be honest here people:
Everyone was praising the Air 2 because of it's incredible speed and the night and day difference between caused by the RAM. Now the 13" iPad has 4GB of RAM and suddenly 2GB is unbearable? I'll admit that charing $150 more and not adding the RAM is annoying, but speaking from experience I have almost NO issues with an Air 2. I could have 8 Safari table open, 4 other smaller apps, play a 3D game and come back to Safari the next day and all my tabs where there. Sure, I would have liked 4GB, but I think 2GB is still more than sufficient for now and I don't think the Pro is going to become a hunk of junk.
As for people comparing it to the iPad 3. This iPad has nearly 20x the CPU/GPU power as the iPad 3 with the same screen The A9X is incredibly fast and efficient with less heat, the display is lamented and it has 2GB of RAM which was top of the line 6 months ago. This device is not going to overheat and become a lagging mess like the iPad 3.
The Air 2 was going to be the next "longevity" model - the Pro is 2x as fast with Apple Pencil, why is the Pro now an "iPad 3 failure" when it's even better than the "longevity" model?
And aside from less layers in Procreate (which no one has a number) and the inability to keep more than 15+ tabs open in Safari along with 7 other apps, what negative consequence are you suffering from having 2GB or RAM?

Did people really believe they'd make the smaller and cheaper model perform better than their top of the line model?

Bummer, makes the 9.7" iPad Pro upgrade from an iPad Air 2 much less attractive. Leaning heavily towards passing. That is pretty major for me as I've owned every 9.7" iPad other than the iPad 4 (and 3 of the 4 mini's) I typically updated each year and passed my previous ones down to family members.
My biggest complaint with my Air 2 isn't the speakers or the speed and I have no use for the pencil or smart connector in the iPad Pro. It is that the Air 2, even with 2gb, still bogs down Safari when using it for a while due to bad memory management. Apple still hasn't fixed that, but was hoping the additional memory would help it occur less often so I'm not always exiting and "quitting" Safari to get it working/scrolling faster again on some sites.
