Second gen in tech specs it'll have 2gb

The A9X is third-gen, according to Apple, so I can't follow the logic of second-gen A8 meaning what we hope it does. Looks to me like Apple thinks the A7 is the first-gen (given their speed comparisons there), then the A8 being second gen, and then A9 being third.

But, given the Apple TV has 2GB RAM according to Apple, it's likely the mini 4 has, too.

Basic smartphones today have 2GB of RAM and in fact most if not many now come with either 3 or 4GB of RAM and here Apple introduces a new premium price iPad Mini 4 as being a 4th generation iPad with 1 freakin GB of RAM? If that is true I am not buying another iPad as that is ridiculous. It should gain a 1GB of RAM from one generation to the next at minimum. Not sure why Apple has to be so stingy with RAM offering us the bare minimum required to just run the basic stuff. I will buy another tablet from another manufacturer in protest to Apple.

That aside Apple should list the amount of RAM it has on their website under specifications just like every other manufacturer does for their smartphones and tablets.

It seems so odd to me that the Mini 4 was announced, but we don't know if it has 1 or 2 GB of ram. Is this lack of info an oversight or intentional ? It appears to be one of the most important specs. If not an oversight, what would be the purpose of not revealing the ram specs ?

It's intentional.

This is typical for Apple. I think it's part of they're marketing image: We don't compete on specs (which most users don't care about) but on the overall user experience. So those of us who do obsess details have to wait until the review units go out to discover these details.

I don't know why they would word the a9 as a third gen?

But I'm thinking like with the iPad 2 we say the die change and it became a second gen the a8 has had some love

Yep just pulled up the marketing pages for all three and it's all in the wording. They have reworded each.
Guys, Apple's info is a bit misleading. What they mean is that the A8 is their second-gen 64-bit chip. A7 is the 1st, A9(X) the 3rd.

Why wouldn't it have the 2GM RAM? they said it's the power of the iPad Air 2 in the mini

it was also pretty expected that all the latest iOS devices in 2015 would have 2GB RAM at least

It won't. A8 chip included instead of A8X.

"But...but Apple TV!" Apple TV is designed completely different towards any iOS device. Apple TV doesn't even use iOS anymore, it uses tvOS. It may have an A8 chip, but because ATV is a box, they can easily fit in a separate 1GB stick somewhere.

And as said in the other thread, people make mistakes. Don't always believe what come from people's mouths, especially there is concrete evidence on the website that Mini 4 will use the A8 chip.

Surely we will know within a day or two. But I have my doubts that Apple would include Split View and Picture in Picture (as indicated on their website) with only 1GB of RAM on board.

Only side by side 'needs' 2gb, split view and picture in picture is available on the iPad Air / mini 2&3 which have 1gb. So unless the mini 4 has side by side, I don't see why people expect 2gb.

Edit: the apple site does show side by side, so hopefully it is the Apple TV A8 with 2gb.

Split View is side by side. This isn't available on mini 2 or 3 but slide over and Picture in Picture are.

any sign of when Apple stores will be stocking the mini 4? tempted to trade my phone in now and stick a sim card in the mini for a few weeks

Probably not until the end of next week at the earliest. They are shipping with iOS 9 which just went gold on Wednesday so they will need to load that up on them before shipping from the factory. The earliest they are likely to be shipping is around now but more likely the start of next week in bulk hence the first delivery dates to home are next Wednesday.

Based on prior years, I would guess mid/end of next week, too, for local pickup.

From anandtech:

"Because Apple's marketing materials show that the iPad Mini 4 can do split screen multitasking it's almost a given that this is a version of A8 with 2GB of RAM."

Has any other site confirmed the amount of memory?

No one can publicly say. The usual sites will have their review samples and the embargo will be lifted next week - probably Wednesday. Will need to wait until that is lifted or end user's receive their orders - whichever comes first.

I think I can wait :) I would like an update from my iPad Mini 2 - I have 32GB on board, and it's just not enough.

Just what I am doing. I have a 64gb Air 2 and a 32gb mini 2 for travel but the Air 2 has spoiled me into upgrading the mini.

Exactly my configuration, but 32 works out fine for the Mini because I basically only use it at work or while commuting.

I've just looked at your signature and we have practically the same equipment- only difference is I have the 15" rMBP and the iPhone 5s. All other devices are identical specs. Great minds think alike and all that. :)
