Damn... now the question is, stay on the 5.1 beta with the battery fix or restore with 5.0.1 and jailbreak.

Lost icons

It worked ok on my 4S but I lost my camera and messaging icons. they are just blank white squares now. ed

Does the jailbreak only work on Lion? I know we need the latest iTunes which only requires 10.5 or higher but does the jailbreak require you to be using the latest OS?

My wife's screen has just got a dead pixel just after JB. Coincidence I know. Should she just DFU and restore from a backup before JB? Genius shouldn't be able to tell then will they?

**White Screen Solved!!!**
I had tried for an hour and kept getting the white screen. The VPN thing never rebooted my iPad2.
But finally I sorted it:
Made sure all pass codes and locks were set to OFF
Ran the jailbreak again from the start
Then DO NOT RUN ABSINTHE FROM YOUR IPAD2 OR IPHONE 4S - just do the VPN trick again. Mine said something like IPSec in the VPN config, but this time when I got the VPN error IT DID REBOOT!
Then HURRAH! my Cydia icon was there! You don't actually need to run the Absinthe icon from your device! Hope this helps people!

Only thing to work for me!

Whenever I try to enable the VPN to connect to the database I get this error "A configuration error occurred." Is there anyway to fix this error?

As long as the backup was before the jailbreak the Genius shouldn't be able to tell.

It was but as I said to my wife (She asked me to ask here anyway) I doubt a genius would even check a backed up version. Especially if its something specially hardware related like a dead pixel, yellowing screen etc.

If you get the white screen you may want to delete the Absynthe app and reinstall it from your mac, then if you continue to get the white screen, do the VPN trick and restart. This worked for me :)

Technically even if your restored from a jailbroken iPhone that wouldn't necessarily mean that the iPhone the backup was done on was ever jailbroken it could have been another phone. They surely couldn't possibly void the warranty that way?

Well jailbreaking voids your warranty right? So I'm wondering if restoring after jailbreak will "get your warranty back". Did you really not understand the first time?

Warranty voids your warranty? Hmm, well who in their right mind would make a warranty claim on a phone that is jailbroken? You? You restore the phone to stock then bring the phone to Apple for warranty to claim. Do you understand that or do I need to make my replies to you in crayon?

It would be up to the individual Genius but I wouldn't be surprised if a few decided it does.

*shrug* I was making a point about the perception. I know when I see a bunch of zeros in a name the first thing I think is "Oh ****, these people don't have a clue what they're doing". I expect a buggy mess from people who have never written software for a living.

Really? It is well known that the iPhone hackers who teamed up for this one are some of the best in the world.

It would be up to the individual Genius but I wouldn't be surprised if a few decided it does.

I though Jailbroken apps weren't backed up?

As for legitimacy, SBSettings and MiWi are reason enough to Jailbreak. I have the 2G/3G toggle now, and I have Wifi tethering.

SBSettings

Love having the quick toggles and I have it set that when I press both my volume buttons at the same time my light turns on. I use it constantly.

Check and Mate!!!

It's definitely my biggest reason to jailbreak. The super fast toggling of data/brightness/WiFi/location is a MUST HAVE for me. My brain slows down big time when searching for the settings app and then the subsections of settings.

The baseband is the key to knowing if she'll be able to unlock it using ultrasn0w after jailbreaking. Get her to find out what it is and then we might be able to give you an answer.

http://www.iphoneheat.com/2009/03/how-to-check-firmware-version-and-baseband-version-of-iphone/

But if she's still on iOS 5.0 then chances are that she can unlock it after jailbreaking.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Yes, I am quite certain she is still on 5. Although I should double check. Thanks again! :)

Question for all MiWi users...... is there a reason to still use that instead of tetherMe? I have a license for both but stopped using MiWi a year ago since tetherMe just enables the native Personal Hotspot.

VPN won't work

Hey Guys,

So Absinthe ran perfectly and my phone restarted and was faced with the white screen when I opened the Absinthe app.

I tried turning on VPN however I keep getting the error "A configuration error occurred"
Under my VPN settings there is a VPN for 'jailbreak', is that suppose to be there?
I don't know what to do from here on.

iPhone 4S, 5.0.1. Mac OS X Lion

Thanks
Rioch

They aren't backed up but their data is usually backed up. So even if you restored the firmware, restored from a backup that was made while jailbroken, there will invariably be settings that can only come from a jailbreak.

Some jb apps don't really do anything other than allow access to a setting that is otherwise unreachable on a stock iPhone. Those settings will come back from a restore too--and is why you usually heart MakeItMine mentioned about traces of jb coming back after a restore.

So I would only restore as new--and not restore from a jb backup--if I was taking my iPhone to Apple.

Yeah, that's what I'd do to. But if you can't, I think most Geniuses would be pretty forgiving (I'm sure at least a few have JB iPhones), it likely won't be put on your permanent record. If one says no, take it to another store.

If the problem truly isn't your fault, stores have enough leeway to make a judgment call. It's happened to me, and is one of the reasons I will continue to buy Apple's stuff, their customer service rocks.

I'm not being arrogant, so please try to help me understand why people jailbreak?

Besides being able to tether without dealing with your cell provider, I see that as a big positive but what else?

There are HUNDREDS of apps already available, no need to jailbreak.

Customizable? Doesn't really interest me, that's mostly a cosmetic thing.

What are the real benefits? Plus I hear more stories of people go back because they had more problems having the phone jailbroken.

Thanks

Let me guess, you live in a country with an oppressive, totalitarian leadership. You don't? On your iPhone you do.

----------

This. 70% of Jailbreakers are pirates.

Disclaimer: My iPod Touch 1G is jailbroken, But not my iPad 2.

Honestly, It makes using iOS more complicated...

Also, The percent is not accurate, it's just an estimate.

95% of all quoted statistics are BS.

BitTorrent

With all the demand that they have, why don't they just distribute it via BitTorrent? That's what Blizzard does for it's updates. It would take most of the load off of their servers.
