jailbreaking isn't about pirating **** and themes.

i could show you cydia and app store receipts in the hundreds at this point, and i jailbreak. people that associate jailbreaking with piracy are a problem.

Meh.. I used to be a jailbreak freak but I stopped ever since it took ages for JBs to come out. I quit pirating apps and learned to live without themes and some of the rather nice utilities like SBSettings. When 5.1 comes out it'll (probably) be a long wait again. Nevertheless appreciate the effort that the JB team puts in every time.

does anyone think before they type these days?

ffs.
The only remaining reason really is that people want to pirate things.

On my iPad 2, after creating a folder, I can't name it nor can I rename an existing folder (keyboard does not appear to be able to type). Anyone else have this issue?

*EDIT* seems to be working after another springboard reset. Phew!

because i can do things that i can't do with a stock iphone (such as controlling wifi/bluetooth/airplane/3g/brightness/etc from the notification center, i can put more than 12 things in a folder, i can change the autocorrect setting to change if i tell it to not to default to changing it, i can turn off the mail connection errors for when im on the subway trying to type a message and not getting bombarded by 12 notifications that mail can't connect to the mail servers, because i can install bitesms and have access to sending and replying to SMS messages without leaving what im doing first, theres a million reasons to jailbreak, and frankly, no reason not to.

i can do all of that, and still have the same reliable OS, the same great hardware, and access to the best mobile appstore made...

and avoiding the cheap android phones, with a ****** unstable OS, 3rd rate apps and developers, viruses, etc. etc.

This is a serious question and i hope someone could answer it. I dont get why people keep jailbreaking their iPhone instead of just getting an android? Im an iPhone user and i like it the way it is. if i wanted a jailbroken one, i would simply get a (cheapier) Android..

is it because of the apps? I really just want to know.

just tested it, worked fine on mine... try respringing/rebooting?

huge jailbreaking fail

When I run Absinthe on my mac all I see is "Beginning jailbreak, this may take a while..." it just stays on this forever... is anyone else having this problem?

I had to downgrade from 5.0.1 9A406 TO 9A405 is that what is causing the issue?

I'm having it too. The reason being is the server traffic is overloaded. At the "Beginning jailbreak, this may take a while..." part, Absinthe needs to connect to greenpois0n.com and as of right now, the site can't even load. So don't restore or downgrade or anything, just wait it out :(

sweet! just installed the jailbreak; i've been waiting like forever for this :)

I also didn't have any connection / timeout problems. Maybe the traffic to the site is finally dying down some.

As a Android fanboy I really hope Apple embraces jailbreaking. I understand that Apple wants to protect against stolen apps/malicious code but there's many people like me who love to customize and tweak their phones to make them better and unique. In the early days of android I did use questionable apps but today every single app is paid for and I've been clean for 2 years. I want to support the developer and I want to receive updates from a legit source.
I really hope iphone 5 is jail-breakable because the dev community can make the phone even better. Otherwise I'm sticking with Android. I have this feeling that the A6 will take a very long time for a proper jailbreak. No phone is 100% perfect out the box.

My Jailbreak Today

Just thought id let everyone know. I couldn't run the absinthe mac app so i restored iPhone (with a backup) and it worked fine. I then started to notice a lag on the UI, so i thought ahh stuff it and went to restore it back to the stock firmware. Then the trouble started. iTunes wouldn't let me restore it, putting it permanently at the "Connect to iTunes" logo and when trying to restore, giving me giving me errors 24 , 1400 and 1600 . I tried manually selecting the firmware, changing the apple server address on the hosts file and the DFU restore way like 48539 times. I can only use my phone when I use tiny umbrella to quit the looping and booting it back into jailbroken state. If anyone knows how to restore back to stock please let me know. ( DFU mode , manual firmware selection and normal restore options all do not work ) .

I just thought id let y'all know. Cheers

Had no problems JBing my 4s. Went quick and smooth. Finally glad to have SBSettings back again woot :p

Question for all MiWi users...... is there a reason to still use that instead of tetherMe? I have a license for both but stopped using MiWi a year ago since tetherMe just enables the native Personal Hotspot.

Wonder that too. I used MiWi before and TetherMe but some reason TetherMe was the only app that I could reinstall without having to purchase again? TM works great too I think. Now I have to repurchase 3G Unrestricter as well :( $19.99 is definitely worth it if I have to purchase it again :(

GPS Spoofer

This is a serious question and i hope someone could answer it. I dont get why people keep jailbreaking their iPhone instead of just getting an android?...

is it because of the apps? I really just want to know.

In my case, I'm a soldier in Afghanistan and like to play a game that relies on one's location. The game isn't supported here, so I jailbroke my iPhone in order to install a GPS Spoofer, which I then set to my home in California. That's about it for me, but I do like the themes I can change. Also, the SMS program, which I don't use so much anymore since I have iMessage now. Don't hate so much, dude. If you don't like it, don't do it. You're coming across as an arrogant hater.

Really?
The only reason I jailbreak is for iBlacklist so I can control inbound texts and calls. And yes, I paid for the app! Not everyone is a pirate...

As an addendum to your post here are some apps I have purchased on Cydia (because :apple: would never allow them) in addition to iBlacklist
  • iGotYa
  • Zephyr
  • Clever Pin
  • Location Spoofer
...and a whole whack of things for free that aren't available otherwise - in addition to all the fine stuff every iPhone user has access to. Some are certainly cosmetic as someone has pointed out. But there are some gamechangers.

iGotYa specifically got me a brand new iPhone 4S for free because it allowed me to nail a thief's ___s to the wall. Even the police were impressed. If I was stuck with "Find My iPhone" as my only recourse I definitely would have paid out of pocket for a new phone. Best $10 I ever spent. Not on the App store and never will be. In fact, Apple took my stolen phone and was nice enough to exchange it for the thief with a brand new one, so their theft awareness/policies/solutions are pretty weak.

There are some more reasons for jailbreaking that are not piracy.

Don't feel like looking through 12 pages. Is there Windows version yet? I know they said it would be released "soon" but what does soon even mean? A few hours, days, weeks?

Was able to jailbreak my 4s with ease.. my ipad 2 on the other hand keeps getting "Absinthe could not open the page because the server stopped responding" oh geez..

You changed the hosts file address to what? Best results are not with Cydia SHSH caching but with a local TSS server and your stored SHSH blobs.

As a last resort copy your blobs to a machine with an unadulterated install of iTunes and set up the TSS server on that machine - again, with the Cydia caching off. This seems to be a solid fallback for me when I ran into problems and just got fed up.

No.

The closest thing to a timeframe I've seen is "waiting on <team member> to get home and compile it for Windows."

People are flooding the dev forum with asking when the Windows version will come out and the mods are getting pretty annoyed. I don't expect there's going to be one better than that until it's extremely imminent. That's been their M.O. this whole project.

Dear Apple Haters, please keep this thread on topic. Start your own "Why do people jailbreak? I don't get it? Why not just get an Android phone?" thread.

Thank you. I am fed up with people who keep hijacking threads by poo poohing the need for jail breaking or moralizing about software piracy. Thread hijacking is a clear violation of rules and such posts should be deleted. To the people who want to belly ache about how bad software piracy is: go post about it in your own thread. But don't drag that into other threads where it has zero relevancy.

Cannot Open Absinthe

Ran the Absinthe program took bout 10-15 min.

The last step says to run the jailbreak program on the phone I'm assuming that's the Absinthe App newly created on iPhone. I run that and I get

"Cannot Open Abstinthe

Abstine could not be open the page because the server stopped responding"

Anyone else having this issue? I'm sure it's b/c of the thousands of people jibing right now, but I didn't see anyone else report this issue.:apple:

The Windows version is taking too long ;-(

Agreed. It's discrimination!!!! :p

They said "soon" but that's so ambiguous!!

Anyway, I'm sure within a day or two.... Waited this long, what's another couple of days??

It's like when you need a pee, you can be holding it in for hours and hours but when you finally get to the loo it feels like you not going to make it, the need to do it becomes so over whelming!!!! :p

im a lil new to this, but i have my iphone jailbroke, but in cydia when i try to add sources all of them say cant locate source what did i do wrong?

thanks

I am getting that same message. It is probably trying to connect to Apple iTunes Match servers :D

Edit: suggestions on this page worked for me.
