Adobe is in the midst of a lawsuit with Dolby and has accused Adobe of copyright infringement and breach of contract

Wow – so Adobe are not only involved in a lawsuit with Dolby, but they also have accused themselves of copyright infringement and breach of contract? Bold strategy, Cotton. :D

Agree - many years ago I standardised on Lightroom for my home photo collection as it was cross platform (Windows / OS X). Good choice given that Apple dropped Aperture a few years later.

Paid for LR3, 4, 5, 6 upgrades.

I don't want a subscription and now that Adobe is playing sillybuggers I'm looking for a LR alternative - anything that will take in my old edits?
Capture One can import Lightroom, Aperture, and Media Pro catalogs.

I think it’s always a major mistake to threaten your own customers. Newer buying Adobe again.

They are warning you that 3rd parties may sue you for using unlicensed software, Adobe is not going to sue you...

And has been pointed out several times in this thread, if you are already paying the subscription fee, why in the world would you continue using a version several generations ago?

Unless there was a court order on them to point that out I find the dire warning of "third party" action to be dubious.

Why aren't people upgrading? Could be anything from folks stuck in the past (maybe they can't deal with photoshop that doesn't have a 3.5mm TRS port) or could be that more recent versions have significantly impacted people's ability to perform as the used to. Either way if Adobe is running around saying the sky will fall I don't think it speaks well for their latest offerings.

You can find alternatives for Photoshop and Illustrator but the problem is InDesign. Affinity Publisher is only in early beta and there's really nothing else that is used commercially.

What's next? Somehow disable older non-cloud CS suites for those of us who don't do subscriptions?

Affinity Photo
Affinity Designer
Affinity Publisher (soon)

And no more "affinity" for Adobe.

I use CC for my freelance clients, but will very seriously reconsider next time it's up for annual renewal. If Affinity (or some other) can deal with Illustrator files, I'd be very tempted to jump ship. Tired of Adobe's crap.

It would be more nefarious if the upgrade cost money. But if you’re already paying for CC, why wouldn’t you upgrade?

I'm still running a perfectly good, perfectly speedy Mac Pro early 2008, but it's OS is El Capitan and current versions of the Adobe's creative cloud apps will not install on that.

I just checked my Adobe stuff. Mine is CS6 from 2013. I still use AI, AP, ID, and a few others. AFAIK, I own the license for these for eternity, although some parts may not function under OS updates. It was worth the money at the time direct from Adobe for $65. I would never subscribe monthly. There are lots of options. Adobe is a crook.

Affinity really does have a chance to be the Adobe killer. I'm sick of Adobe's money-grab policies that always screw the customer. Outrageous prices for Acrobat (it shouldn't cost $400 to be able to edit and create PDF's, a staple file format), and for the high prices they charge for their subscriptions, their software becomes buggier every release and support (off-shore at that) is the worst. I can't believe they still do not support using their apps on a network. So 1990's...

Hopefully Affinity is working on PDF software to round out their suite!

Adobe sent out an email to its Creative Cloud customers and here is what it said:
"$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$ $$$$$$$$ $$$$!$$$$!!$ $$$!!! $$$$$$$! $$$ $$$!!!! $$)!)!!!!$$$$$$."

Yes nothing says success quite like threatening your customer base with legal action in your quest for megabucks! lol

Don't ever use a subscription service for applications.

Bad joojoo.

And I might add..This is how far down the tubes Adobe has gone.
They used to be a good company.

Yes, the old paid major upgrade model forces Adobe and other companies to innovate and improve rapidly to convince user for upgrading the software. When it’s subscription based, it’s just a maintenance plan. Look 1Password, so true.

It's funny to look back and realize how small a company they were. I talked with either Mr. Warnock or Mr. Geschke in 1987 about a problem with HP's print cartridges for the newly released LaserJet II. Heck, I remember when Microsoft and Apple had less than 500 employees. I'm old.

Big companies can be hard to navigate when new technology horizons emerge. Adobe is no different.

This sort of thing is kind of expected with software as service models.

You pay to use their apps and you do it on their own terms, whatever they provide the current month.

If you think that sucks supports pay once software.

I don't see what the dig deal is, yeah the email is little threatening and reminiscent of the 90's and 00's. However, you can install lightroom and photoshop on another computer, remove your sign in and it will still work. I'm assuming that's what Adobe is getting at. They don't want people installing and removing credentials and keeping the software on the machine.

I bet the newer version prevents mooching?

This is quite ridiculous. Everyone knows that with Adobe, the older the version, the better it is. But realistically, you can just keep using the old versions, no one is going to sue you, because they don't care and no one can actually check what version you're using.

In a statement to AppleInsider, Adobe said that it could not comment on the third-party infringement issue because it "concerns ongoing litigation."Adobe is in the midst of a lawsuit with Dolby and has accused Adobe of copyright infringement and breach of contract, which could be the reason why past versions of Creative Cloud apps are now restricted.

as a free alternative to Adobe Lightroom, had anyone used darktable? on linux I don't really have any other opportunity, but it ticks all the boxes for me

and yes, FU adobe

A solid PDF app is the one thing I seem to be missing in my arsenal. I limp along with Preview, but I mean I seriously limp along with it and I miss Acrobat. But it's over $100 a month for their software suite (I'm in Canada), I just can't justify those expenses when it's mixed in with all the other overheads of running a business. I had a stand along CS6 but Adobe deactivated it when I had bought it through a 3rd party vendor and wouldn't let me activate it. So benevolent....

I imagine that Capture One will be the only real alternative once Lightroom stops working properly.

Capture one is kind of steep at $300 (of course the Cannon and Nikon versions are higher ), is there any cheaper alternatives?
