Adorama have not charged my card for the MacBook Pro but they have charged the AppleCare. An i9, 32gb, Vega 20, 1tb is available today at my Apple Store in MA. Driving there now to get it and cancel my order with adorama, screw them. I will pay more as it's an i9 not an i7, plus I won't get the apple insider Black Friday discount of $225 and will pay state tax.

Adorama i7 price: $3724.00
AppleCare: $349.00
Total: $4073.00

Apple i9 price: $4249.00
AppleCare: $379.00
Sub Total: $4628
tax: $289.25
Total: 4,917.25

Difference is $844.25

Is it worth it?

Benefits: I get it today and can work on it today, faster CPU, full Apple return policy, maybe better AppleCare, I don't give any money to Adorama

Cons: extra cost to me, I give even more money to Apple and the state, and don't get the extra lens I wanted.

PS can I keep the AppleCare from Adorama?

If you have to have it today, then go for it. I ordered my second one from Apple since we don't have any Apple stores in 200 miles. But, I used education pricing, and the difference was $150~ for my model.

No, you need to cancel AppleCare as it needs to be purchased with the laptop. Adorama auto assigns that applecare to the laptop serial # when purchased.

Yeah I figured that with the AppleCare. I don't need it today but I do need it by next Wednesday. Not sure I can get an educational pricing as I don't formally teach, but I do teach assistants I use in terms of workflow and editing, but don't think Apple will count that! Adorama have not given me any eta or details on my order (placed on the 23rd). I ordered an i7, 32gb, vega 20, 1TB. I see that a bunch of Apple Stores have the i9, 32gb, Vega 20, 1TB in stock and available for pickup. I wonder if there is a production delay in the i7s?

Apple doesn't require any credential verification whatsoever if you order from the online education store. However if you buy in store, I believe they ask to see some credentials.

Thanks I will try that! I just looked the regular MBP price is $4,249. The educational price is $3,899.00. I would want to pick up at store though.

I don't have anything that qualifies for education either, but Apple doesn't verify it online. I don't know what is wrong Adorama. But I can't even get it canceled and now they are closed over the weekend for online customer service. I am going to be yelling at them Monday. There is a contact named Helen that I saw on other forums that has helped fix order related issues. Her email is: helen @ adorama.com

Yeah, you can order online for pickup at store. Do they verify it then? I am not sure.

Thanks. I will try. When I do I will then cancel my order with Adorama. I am presuming the i9 and Apple return policy will be worth the extra especially however I hear conflicting reports on the performance and problems with some i9s. Having the Apple return policy may be useful then as as soon as you open the box with adorama you can't return it.

I believe they do.

With the prices Apple charges, the amount of money I've spent over the years, but also the infrequency I've bought MBPs specifically, I don't feel one bit bad using and abusing the student discount once every 5 or so years between my wife and I. At absolute worst, if they did verify it, all they could/would do is charge you the difference against regular price anyway.

So I should just get it delivered

Getting it delivered though, you won't get it by Wednesday. The deadline earliest is Dec. 11th right now.

Yeah, I am now going to see what adorama tell me on Monday. If I get the same response from them with no confirmation of a delivery date I will go to the Apple Store & just suck it up and pay full wack. In theory once Adorama receive it I get next day delivery via their VIP360 membership.

They lied to me on the phone saying they had my tracking info and I would get it in 24 hours too. I read online that was a tactic they use to not cancel your order but they don't actually have it still. I'll be a lot happier if I can just cancel my order with them, but I have a feeling they are delaying it on purpose to make it go through so I lose my $70 of shipping. It will get ugly with them if they do that.

I have ordered several Macs from Adorama. If it's a non-standard model, they often drop-ship it from Apple directly in China. As such, it will ship via DHL, and Adorama seems to have a hard time getting a tracking number. In other words, it may already be on its way to you. Keep calling Adorama and insist for your tracking number.

I will. That probably explains their return policy. Hope DHL treats the package with care! I still may just cancel and buy direct from Apple Store.

Not to freak you out, but DHL actually lost my MacBook from Apple/China earlier this year. It made it all the way to NJ, then tracking updates just stopped. Had to file a claim and re-order from Adorama. No fault of them, of course. Kept thinking that a few months later the MacBook would just randomly show up on my doorstep, but tracking never did progress.

Thanks. I am now wary of receiving any laptop directly from overseas over a long distance. However I presume all Apple laptops regardless of whether you purchased from Apple directly online, in an Apple Store or a reseller travel the same way.

From one fellow Bostonian to another, I've bought most of my Macs via the Education Store with the discount and have never been ask to show proof. I do have 3 kids in school so it would not be hard if they actually asked. But what I do is select in store pickup in NH at their Salem Store at the Rockingham Mall which is about a 30 minute drive on 93 North. You not only save with the educational discount but also on tax. Plus AppleCare is about $30 cheaper as well. It's a total win win situation and you can return or exchange at any Apple Store close to you should you change your mind.

thanks I will consider this! Adorama have annoyed me enough on this I'll do anything to avoid using them now!

I’m sure you guys realize this but the difference between the i7 and i9 is negligible at best and there have been tests where the i7 2.6ghz performed better. If you need the Vega GPU and more ram/ssd I can understand otherwise I don’t see the point in the upgrade processor wise since the i9 will throttle under load

You will get a sizable amount of people that will vehemently deny that, even though there seems to be sufficient discussions here that the CPU runs hotter, throttles more often, and is not faster then the 2.2.

That's why I originally ordered an i7 Vega 20 but they don't seem to be available until Dec 18th.

Got an update from Adorama. They emailed me this below, which to me had a rude tone to it. Also, it took them 10 days to get me a tracking # from the time I ordered it. 4 days from when I told them to cancel and they still didn't cancel it. So they are basically eating my $70 in shipping that they won't return I am sure on purpose.

Now the decision is, to keep my Apple order directly with Apple, and return this back to Adorama without opening it, or keep the Adorama one, take a chance on it, and canceling my Apple order.

Thoughts?!

------

Your order was requested to be drop shipped. It means will ship
directly from the manufacturer, however we were informed that this was
shipped and left their facility and can no longer be cancelled.

Please accept the package and do not refuse it. This package came direct
from Apple factory overseas so when this gets refuse it will take longer to
be delivered.

Once received, please do not open and let us know so we can send our return
label and return instructions to ship it to our warehouse.

Please note that once opened this is a non-returnable item.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

We apologize for any inconvenience

Thank You

Their response seems reasonable to me. You are not out a cent and they're eating whatever shipping costs them. They simply may nt have been able to cancel the order in time and had to wait for Apple to tell them it was built and shipped to take action.

To me it comes down to which machine do you want?
