Just a reminder for everyone reminiscing
Those were for third party Apps, it should be noted.
Apple themselves doing ADs is the really objectionable part to me.

I do not care whether the ad is full-screen or the size of a • . I do not want to be followed by Apple in any form or function when I go somewhere and specify a destination. Don’t sell me privacy, Apple, only to intrude it. I paid premium $$$ for your hardware — I am a customer, not a product.Go to Apple Maps, search for “Food”.
Examine the results.
In the future, it’ll be just like that, but the top result will have a tiny “AD” logo.
And this should be applauded. More people should reject funding companies that don’t make products that work the way they like.Hence why my 15PM will be the last Apple item I purchase.
Isn’t this a setting that the user controls? So that those power users in the know can see the content uncensored?Macrumors continues to go down the drain. Can’t even let us complain about Apple’s greed. Did Apple’s PR ask them to do this? MR does receive media tickets for events at Apple.
“I remember when Steve didn’t stand in front of a crowd telling them about iAd” 😀![]()

That word… giant. I don’t think it means what you think it means.Yes... because a giant coloured border with the "Ad" badge is "unobtrusive" LOL
And it's ads, not "ads" because that's what they literally are, advertisements.
There’s ads in iCloud Mail now?So gross. I remember Steve gleefully telling people there were no ads in iCloud Mail during his last presentation as a way to stick it to Gmail. He's rolling in his grave right now.
We’d have to see if a huge number of people returned their vehicles, though. It’s one thing to complain loudly about a thing that happened, but if BMW’s profits only go up, then what they’ve learned is “Do more ad opportunities with big movies”.It backfired for car manufacturers already. Why not learn the lesson?

Why Automakers Are Ditching Apple CarPlay: a $625 Billion Opportunity in In-Car Advertising
Your car knows you’re hungry—the aim plan to put sponsored ads on your car’s infotainment screen, giving automakers a lucrative revenue stream.www.autoweek.com
You do realize that Apple LITERALLY does follow you everywhere, right? They can’t give you directions to “there” from “here” if they don’t know where “here” is. And, even if you manually enter both ends of the route, they can show you when you need to turn right if they don’t know where you are.I do not care whether the ad is full-screen or the size of a • . I do not want to be followed by Apple in any form or function when I go somewhere and specify a destination. Don’t sell me privacy, Apple, only to intrude it. No worries, Ternus will most definitely be on stage to tell folks about the amazing ad experiences in Apple Maps. 🙂 You won’t miss the experience. This is what Apple’s retiring Chief Ensh… Officer would have have said at the September event:
We are thrilled to announce that advertisements are coming to Apple Maps. Ads tailored to the chosen destinations will enrich your navigational experience in ways never seen before. This is the best version of Spam —eh, sorry, accidental backwards spelling — Maps we ever released. We think our shareholders are gonna love it.
A subscription requires your consent. Apple would never take route with Maps. With Ads you are no longer a customer with a choice — you are a product.I mean who cares. As long as it's not intrusive I'm ok with it.
Would people rather pay a subscription? I wouldn't. And Apple isn't a charity where they give away software and map services for free. As a software developer, I hate it when people think all software should be free and it's an abomination when it's not. These ads help make it free (not having to pay directly for it).
Nothing objective here. And it works outside the USA and Canada. Apple Maps is virtually useless anywhere else in the world.
Objectively incorrect. I used Apple Maps extensive in a recent trip to Switzerland and France and it was fine.
Fully agree! Waze and Google Maps is what works. Drove through Sweden, France, Germany and Denmark this summer - Apple Maps is a joke here. Couldn’t find most of the campings or POIs by name for example, both Waze and Google Maps found them without any problems. Even the Audi’s built in navigation system did a better job in most cases.
Moot for me anyway because I do not watch the events anymore since they turned into a series of uninterrupted Apple ads. If Ternus brings back the original format, I will return. No worries, Ternus will most definitely be on stage to tell folks about the amazing ad experiences in Apple Maps. 🙂 You won’t miss the experience.
The perception of intrusion vs. non-intrusion could be influenced by the absence or presence of shareholder status. The “ads” in the App Store are non-intrusive.
In a major city, in the modern day, it would be extremely cumbersom to use physical maps. Obviously not having live traffic information with rerouting would be huge, and for a city like Los Angeles, I would need to sit down with a map every time i go somewhere new, and if there's any construction or major traffic we'd be screwed“Maps” used to be sold on paper and you describe exactly what I used to do. Allowed me to concentrate on the road, and traffic “signs” to follow my “directions.” I developed the ability to follow signs with my “sense of direction” anywhere I needed to go. . . City maps were sold in books and had an amazing amount of detail. State level maps were sufficient for most other trips. . . Rural areas also often had detailed maps for parks with dirt roads and trails. . . or use USGS quadrant maps.
Maps isn't a product, the phone is a product. Maps is a service, that runs off of servers and needs a constant influx of updated information that needs to be processed, and the software needs to be kept up to date. The issue comes to a head for me when the product no longer feels like it is mine but the manufacturer’s and they are making changes that better suits them. I no longer update my microsoft or my apple products for this reason. And this is only going to get worse. My next phone will be a pixel with graphene os.
Nonetheless it’s still a subjective evaluation with opinions influenced by general bias of the company, management and overall performance and policies. The perception of intrusion vs. non-intrusion could be influenced by the absence or presence of shareholder status.
It’s not about Apple Maps. I don’t use it very often. It is the general direction of their products. When the corporate direction goes from “Let’s make the best products for our customer.” to “Let’s make the best products for our corporate interests.” then I am no longer interested in their products.Maps isn't a product, the phone is a product. Maps is a service, that runs off of servers and needs a constant influx of updated information that needs to be processed, and the software needs to be kept up to date.
They'll probably demand that other ad companies can insert their own ads into the Maps app. 😛Hopefully this is something the EU can block. 🤣
… and before Maps was “enriched” with ads, the bakery that popped up on the top of the list was the closest one. And now it’ll be the bakery who paid most/had better reviews, I assume.I would wait and see how it is actually implemented before bashing the Maps. My understanding is that it would only relate to search. Say, you search for a bakery, and the ones who paid and have better reviews pop up on the top of the list. Kind of like it used to be with Google search ads in browsers? How would this make Maps less usable or more distracting?
If the EU is ad friendly, then the US is ad obsessed.Unlikely. Multiple EU regions have already complained to Apple that they give users the option to ask advertisers not to track. They’re quite ad friendly in the EU.
Ad companies other than … ?? Can’t be Apple because they are not an ad company. Any business meeting Apple’s Maps app ad policy can create an account and buy Maps app ads space. They'll probably demand that other ad companies can insert their own ads into the Maps app. 😛
