Ads Coming Soon to Apple Maps

What kind of “immersive navigation”? Tried it yesterday, looks the same to me. 🤔
 
I would wait and see how it is actually implemented before bashing the Maps. My understanding is that it would only relate to search. Say, you search for a bakery, and the ones who paid and have better reviews pop up on the top of the list. Kind of like it used to be with Google search ads in browsers? How would this make Maps less usable or more distracting?

It's the great obsession of the Cupertino Company... squeeze every last dollar from its customers.

The devotees argue "it's the mission of every corporation to maximize profits" which reveals just how successful the company has been in programming its followers to believe anything the company feeds them.

Yes, corporations are in business to profit, but there's a value proposition that is achievable which keeps the shareholders happy while not milking the customers dry. Great customer loyalty is the result.
 
Apple is fine with ads every other paragraph with your News+ subscription. I’m surprised it's taken this long to put ads in their free services.

Insert every derogatory cuss word here, that MR won't let me type... The B word, the C word, etc... I was hoping that Apple was above this, but apparently their greed won out, AGAIN...

So, ok, this is curiosity, when it’s wrong then and it “gets you lost” - what’s the difference between it and google maps?

The handful of times that either Google or Apple gave “bad directions” to me - it was like 99% right. As in, there was a Dave & Busters in Chicago where if you were northbound on I-355 the business “pin” for the address was closer to the interstate. So mapping would fail that last 1%. It would tell you to get off the interstate, but map you to get back on southbound. But, you could obviously just continue past the southbound intersection stop light, take the left at the next intersection, and maps would recover (even though you could finish by driving by eye now).

Or, in a case with Google Maps, it was right and got you to the destination… but gave extra directions. e.g. Google maps gave me directions to a Greyhound bus station, but took an awkward, dumb, extra long, and circuitous route out of the neighborhood where my Mother’s brother’s family lived in New Jersey. Why? I don’t know, maybe it thought some of the roads were one way and so would give you unnecessary directions when a much more direct route existed that Apple had no problem finding.

I can agree, I like the Apple Maps UI way better, myself.
 
The issue comes to a head for me when the product no longer feels like it is mine but the manufacturer’s and they are making changes that better suits them. I no longer update my microsoft or my apple products for this reason. And this is only going to get worse. My next phone will be a pixel with graphene os.

So just by name? But otherwise could put in the physical address and it could navigate to that? That is inconvenient.

The “sat nav” (a sd card) mapping software of my own car struggles with that. There is a fried chicken franchise here called “Popeyes” but you have to spell out specifically “Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen Chicken” or it won’t find it. But the cars UI and Voice integration are the real problem. However, since it is SD card based, it is available “offline” if I’m out of Cellular service, the phone battery is dead, or I just don’t have my phone (whatever the reason).

These products are the manufacturers. Go to a pixel with graphene is and the phone will be yours.

Perhaps “fine” might be a way to describe it in 2026 in France and Switzerland, I tried using it before in Europe and it did not work well. I just came back home from a long trip to Latin America and it was useless anywhere we went.

“Fine” is a general term implying the software did was it was supposed to. We also used Google Maps and that was “fine” as well.
 
The big issue I've had with Apple Maps overseas aren't the maps themselves, but rather the database of restaurants, etc - specifically the reviews. Google just has a much larger presence than Apple outside the US, and their database reflects that. Apple Maps has many times navigated me to establishments that closed years ago, especially down in South America. Google is less likely to lead me astray in that regard.

That said I find the Apple Maps interface to be nicer to use - it's less cluttered IMO.

(Also... just take a look at the ads in the App Store app, it's not "non-intrusive").

It doesn't handle interstates well around here. It will tell you that your destination is on the interstate or have you turn into a wall when you're already past your exit. We have also had issues with the bicycle directions. Like sure, it's not all the time, but it happens more often with Apple Maps than it does with Google Maps.
