I have no problem with companies not bundling chargers - let's face it, the VAST majority of people either already have one from a previous phone, or use something todally different (QI/multi-port charger etc).

What I have a problem with is crap like Apple did with "magsafe". a) Just use bloody QI like everyone else - if you're claiming to be environmentally friendly, custom proprietry chargers are bad. and b) if an almost-headline feature is going to require a specific charger, put the damn thing in the box.

Funny, they (Samsung, mi, one plus) always keep one eye on what apple does. mock them and follow suit the next year. not at all surprised by this news as history repeats itself.

Part of me feels its wrong for Apple and (perhaps) Samsung to take earphones and power adapters out of the box. Yet, another part feels I don't really use wired headphones and I have few power adapers. And, in most cases I plug my phone up to my desktop. But if anything, I do feel both Samsung and Apple can leave a dongle.. I believe something that small won't make much a difference for packaging.
There is a cable. That’s like a long dongle

Samsung, following never leading.
Credit where it is due. They did bring us larger phones! You don’t get innovation like that from just anyone. And they were the only OLED screen supplier. Of course the samsmug tax on anyone who bought those was anti-competetive

But Apple opened themselves up for it, which is stupid.

In the past, they could always claim that users should've used the included cable and charger. Now, Apple themselves told users to use their existing chargers, whatever that is. It's an unwise decision imo.
Really.? I never even bring my brick anymore. Even hotels have compatible ports in the rooms

Of course they will. They mocked Apple about the headphone jack too...and whaddya know, they got rid of that as well. Apple leads. The rest follow.

Samsung's marketing strategy is just embarrassing. Since it's so predictable, how is it actually effective? You think they would've given up the "mock, then copy" formula. Surely anyone can see through it by this point.
Yet they still manage to sell practically the same amount of phones as Apple does, so whether it's embarrassing or not, their marketing strategy still seems to be working pretty well.

I'd call this ironic, but think it's more a case of their PR firm and division 'jumping the shark' over that issue. After the water dries up, they realize 'Hey, not including this stuff, and not changing the price is actually a GREAT IDEA! Let's do it too!'

How many have dropped 3.5mm jacks now too? What Apple did by doing that is push people into the necessity of more expensive, and more profitable, Bluetooth headphones and earbuds. And they have been dragged, kicking and screaming. (sarcasm) I wonder how many people continue to use the included earbuds rather than buy something else, and of those that bought Apple devices, how many bought Apple branded Bluetooth earphones/earbuds. Apple isn't exactly stupid. Their competitors that seek cheap dings against Apple should learn that Apple is giving them cover to make more money!

I wonder how long until the first lawsuit because someone bought a crappy no-brand charger from a mall kiosk and it caught fire, burning down their house.

At least by including a charger with every phone, Apple and Samsung ensure that most people are using a high quality charger. Now everyone who buys a new phone will have to buy a charger if they don't have one, and you know people will go for the cheapest garbage that does the job.
It is absolutely true that customers who buy the iphone 12 whereby:
  • they have no alternative charging bricks
  • no other spare cables
  • no computers of any kind
  • no other powerful batteries with usb ports
  • no USB ports on any other device they may own
Will have to buy an appropriate charging brick and cable. But one who "loses" the charging brick would be in the same situation and possibly get the "cheapest garbage" that does the job.

True in some cases. In others one can get perfectly adequate 3rd party b/t headphones for the price of earpods. (maybe not the best quality, but it can be done)

Samsung has been using a USB C cable and charger for years so it makes sense for them to do so unlike what Apple is doing. Removing the charger and including a cable for which iPhone users people likely don’t have the chargers. Unless they are only expecting Non iPhone users to buy the new iPhones?

Then why does the magsafe connector need to exist?
Because Qi doesn't entirely serve what Apple wants?
The right question should be if you can use a standard charger with your iPhone 12, why a complaint? Why trying to cut out an option? It doesn’t like Apple taking out your option to use your old Qi charger.

That will be a lawsuit against the maker of said cheap charger then.

Buy cheap, buy twice is a lesson that some might need to learn.
