Well what would they showcase in October aside from iMacs and a iPad Air 3? Even if the had an iMac, Mac Pro and iPad announcement, those wouldn't fill up their usual 2 hours and so on minutes. I guess if they did do an event they could have it be all Macs with the Air 3 on the side... But still, that seems unlikely, the could have easily mentioned a spec bump Air 2 today as they did for the mini, but they didn't...
so something tells me they probably won't have any more iPad news this year.

If they would confirm they aren't releasing an iPad Air 3 this year I would buy a iPad Air 2 right now. I'm sure a lot of people would. If they do have an October event though then what else is there to announce other than a new iPad Air. And I doubt they would hold and event just for that.

Yeah with an announced pro and mini 4, there's not gonna be an air 3. Glad I picked up air 2 when I did a couple weeks ago. Pro is too large for me.

LOL they are not gonna organize an event in October just to announce an ipad air 3, lol is not that important. In fact now the ipad air 2 is even more expensive since today, not in the States but in other countries...

I owned and really like an Air. The Air 2 is not a minor improvement, and that's especially true if you're running iOS 9. SplitView is awesome.
It is to me. It was not worth dropping $600 for when I had purchased the original Air a year before. The improvements announced at last years' event were minor and not enough to justify the purchase

I don't recall there being an announcement for the iPad 4. I seem to recall it just showed up one day. I think the only differences from the iPad 3 were the A6x processor and the lightning connector. I predict the Air 3 will have the new keyboard connector, 13MP and 5MP camera sensors (back/front) and the A9X processor and be out in time for Christmas.

There you go:

Good luck with your prediction...

That is actually the best argument for no October iPad event. Nothing left to show, unless they drop it in with Macs. Never say never with Apple, but it seems like a verrrrrrry lonnnnnng shot.

You may be hanging onto that Air for a while. ;)

They've released a new regular sized iPad every year since 2010, with the last three being in October. The iPad Pro, new Apple TV and iPhone 6s/6sPlus have kept the rumor mills busy enough that the minor changes required for an Air 3 might well have flown by under the radar.

I'm not giving up hope on it, yet.

The iPad/tablet market is cooling. The Air 2 is still a hot piece of hardware, in terms of its performance, and by delaying the Air 3 until next year they are likely to sell a whole lot more iPads, overall, than they would if they dropped all three at the same time or close (as in October).

Maybe they'll go back to a Spring release if they find something useful to put into a hypothetical iPad Air 3.

Yeah the iPad Pro is nice but too expensive and, (IMO) for the way most people use them, too big. I have a MacBook Air 13 inch. The big screen would be immersive on the pro for sure, but unnecessary when I already have a laptop.

I am not even sure how as a average customer I would use iPad Pro. I have little contemplation when going for iPad Air due to the size issue, let alone a Pro.

They won't drop the regular size iPad, though sales are declining (now) it's still a top selling Tablet. I imagine Apple didn't refresh this year for 2 reasons... (first one is probably not true.)

1.) Air 2 is still a beast and therefore needed no real update. ;)
2.) Let the iPad Pro be released and give people a chance to buy and check that out... then give iPad Air 3 a bigger boost (3D touch, A10 processor, perhaps speakers on other side if possible, and a new Rose Gold color.)

This is Apple, despite some silly mistakes and whatnot, they always have a plan.

I can't see an iPad Air 3 until this time next year now. There is almost no chance that Apple will update the Air next month. If they were going to update the Air, they would have made the announcement today (just like the upgrade to the iPad Mini).

In Australia, the price of the iPad Air 2 also went up (I know the Aussie dollar has deteriorated), but if an new iPad was on it's way, I think they would have kept the price the same just to clear stock.

Unfortunately, I think it's another 12 months until I get a new iPad now. Too bad, I was looking forward to an iPad Air 3.

I'm actually in favor of slower release cycles. A new iPad model every year (or less) often discouraged me from buying new models (I jumped from iPad 2 to iPad Air 2). The Air 2 is great still, and there's not really much in the way of competition. Google's tablet flagship is still the Nexus 9, and the Air 2 beats it.

I'd like a 17" MacBook Pro, though!

I plan to buy an Air 2 this month and would be a tad upset if Apple (in a one in a million chance) decided to do a low-key press release of an updated iPad Air in October...
But then I have been thinking to myself... what really would be new for the Air 3 this year anyway? I mean the iPad Pro is just a giant Air 2 with a slightly faster GPU/CPU, and Stylus, but still nothing is really groundbreaking this year for the iPads. Compared to last year Air v Air 2...
Apple didn't upgrade the Air this year, so it wouldn't cannibalize the sales of their newest toy.

I am thinking of the possibly of Apple changing up their iPad lineup with respect to chips:

iPhone: Latest A-series (A9)

iPad Pro: Latest AX-series (A9X)
iPad Air: Previous AX-series (A8X)
iPad Mini: Previous AX-series (A8X)

This may be in order to differentiate the Pro from the Air. It seems however a bit strange if the Air (which is still a premium product) should not get the same generation chip as the iPhone.. Anyway, the Air 2 is a great, and not really in need for an update now, imho.

One may suspect Air 3 going directly to A10x together with the Pro next autumn, or keeping the aforementioned separation by getting the A9X while the Pro gets A10X.

I wonder how the A8X compares to the A9(non X model).
I've heard rumors and whatnot that the A9 and A8X are very similar. The A9X is the bigger change from the A8X... But mostly on the GPU and memory side, the CPU on the other hand isn't loads faster, it's a modest, but nice bump.
Switching subjects a bit... Apple.com touted the Air 2's A8X as a "Desktop-Class" CPU and then they (Apple) said the exact same about the iPad Pro at the event, but everyone is wiggin out. The benchmarks for the Air 2 put it on par with older or cheaper PCs and MacBooks too, so why are people just now seeing that on the Pro and freaking out? lol

**Thinking out loud... I do like the speed bumps the Pro has, but really aren't enough to get me even close to thinking about dropping a $1000 for the "iPad Plus"... Err Pro ;)
I'm going to wait for the A10X, in hopefully the smaller more portable iPad Air 3, but if we don't get a good update to the Air. I am fine with the Air 2, as it is the bees knees. lol.
