Mine have gone through the washing machine a couple of times. Immediately afterward, they still worked but sounded horribly tinny. A couple of days later, though, the sound had returned to normal. So, the 1st generation model might not have IP-rated water resistance, but they still seem to be able to withstand some water. At least, mine have.

They look like white goo running out of the wearer's ears... I find the ear pods to be very uncomfortable to wear, and they constantly fall out. I'm quite sure these overpriced and stupid looking airpods would do the same. To each their own though...and YMMV.
I agree that they looked stupid when they were first released and hardly anybody owned them. Despite that, I bought some as soon as they were available and tolerated the occasional odd glances from passersby.

However, now that lots of people have AirPods, they are a familiar sight and don't seem so strange. That's true of most things we put on our bodies — the more people who are wearing them, the less unusual they look.

Does that make the AirPods a "good" look. No. But at least it's one that no longer stands out in a crowd.

I'm one of the weirdos that only use one at a time, even while on long flights. I haven't been able to tell any battery issues yet. Using one means I seem to always have the battery ready in the other when I switch them out. I probably could if I used them both at the same time. Water resistance would be good but I'm not sure how that would fit into my usage.
That's how I use mine most of the time, too. I alternate between the left and the right every day when walking through Tokyo every morning. I can listen to podcasts and still remain alert to the sound of vehicles, cyclists and cell-phone zombies sneaking up on me. My battery life remains great and, as you point out, one AirPod is always fully charged when the other runs out of juice.

My biggest design improvement wish focuses more on the case, not the AirPods. I want space for silicon hooks to stay on the AirPods when in the case charging. Perhaps a reversible/swappable molded insert under the lid where one orientation holds them snug without silicon hooks, one orientation molded to allow silicon hooks.

I gave them a try without silicon sleeves, and they fell out of my ears about once every 45 seconds while jogging. don't think it is just bouncing alone that makes them pop out. I think it has something to do with my long hair and raised collar design of my running jacket brushing by them in addition to bouncing up and down. It was totally embarrassing to try and jog with them, for every other minute I found myself praying they didn't land in dog crap or fall down a sewer drain. As bad luck would have it, I tried them out while commuting home on my bicycle last week to see if cycling would be less bouncy on my AirPods. The left one fell out when I turned my head at an intersection. It got run over and totally smashed by a car in the intersection. That was an expensive experiment.

Why if anyone was “smart” they would have waited for these considering the 2nd ones were a small incremental update lol

If you need a pair of headphones you buy them. People that wait years for a product are not smarter, simply they don’t need the product. If they needed it they would buy it. If the need it and wait for years for a future unspecified product I would say they are the opposite of smart.

I was shocked to see some cheap AirPod clones in some Arab phone store down the street the other day when buying a SIM card for a tourist friend. Like they cost 40€, looked like AirPods (from the distance) in a case that also looked like the real deal (but didn’t feel like it) and even offered W1 chip pairing magic!!! That was what shocked me the most. He opened the case and they popped up on my phone! I couldn’t test the sound and they definitely had cheaper build quality but still. Crazy! No wonder I see so many folks running around with them lately in my ****** neighborhood ;D

I would love an AirPods for swimming but it would need to be completely redesigned by Apple. The current form factor would not work.

Thank u to all the beta testers who bought first gen. The real version comes out September

Thanks to all the people buying the Rev1 buds in September. The improved batches start filtering through in January.

Love my AirPods but disappointed with the minimal update this year

As for waterproofing? I couldn’t care less, I don’t swim with them or shower!

I saw a YouTube video where this guy soaked them and they were fine

And wish the price was a little cheaper

True story: I left mine in my gym shorts after a run and they took a spin in the washing machine. Still work perfectly (and the wax was removed). I wouldn't recommend this at all, but its likely it won't be a huge hurdle to achieve water resistance.

PS. It was a delicates cycle with no softener / conditioner (that is how I treat my gym shorts)

Hip-hop gangstas who wear their jeans with the waist hanging at the knees may say that those jeans fit perfectly.

If Apple won't make AirPods with interchangeable tips, they should at least make the charging case able to hold AirPods with third party silicone sleeves installed. If the tips on the AirPods were made of more grippy material rather than smooth plastic, that might help with AirPods constantly loosening while wearing them. The loosening affects sound quality and isolation. This causes people to turn up the volume, resulting in shorter battery time. So if Apple wants longer battery life, they should make the AirPods stay in the ears better.

Bluetooth and WiFi do not work underwater very far at all. Less than a foot at most. So if you’re planning to swim with these you’ll be sorely disappointed.

I would hope Apple doesn’t launch new pods with just water resistance. That would be a pure money grab. I would hope that it’s a much bigger improvement with water resistance as one minor feature.

I need a major feature: findability! (past the Find My... option, which I don't care for)

Way back in time, I got my ears pierced so I could quit losing half of pairs of clip-on earrings... and in more recent times I have resisted the idea of getting AirPods no matter what they may look like.

AirPods look to me like I would lose at least one of them within hours or days at best. They're not exactly clip-ons but I'm not at all sure they'd stay put in my ears, and if I took one out for some reason and set it down, good luck to me later on when I realized I was short one AirPod.

I'd like them in principle, I am sure, because I do very much like using a BT portable speaker which of course is far less portable than AirPods -- but besides clip-on earrings in my youth I also have much more modern recollections of losing at least one mini iPod, one 2nd gen nano and one shuffle...they're all right here in this damn house somewhere, and those are all a lot bigger than AirPods.

I have the 2nd gen.. it's nice but sadly it won't stay in my ear for longer running/jogging sessions. This isn't a deal breaker, I still love them but I do hope they do something to improve the grip because I know I'm not the only one with this issue.

Lost one at the bottom of a pool in the Dominican Republic. Luckily I was able to go down there and get it. Still works to this day. Pretty water resistant if you ask me.

They'll have to improve them drastically to move me from my Gen 1 AirPods.
In-ear design with better fit and sealing would be my reason for getting excited...

I regret waiting so long to buy these; my first pair were gen1 purchased in February and they are without a doubt my favorite Apple product in a while. I bring them places I never bothered to wind up headphones and pack for.

…and then you'd pass out, trying to dive for them, and then your spouse would find you emasculated and divorce you, taking the kids and house with her, you'd start hitting the bottle again, your work performance would drop, you'd get fired, and end up living on the streets for the rest of your short life.

**** these unreleased waterproof AirPods!

Don't get cable.

In a research note this week, shared by Philip Elmer-DeWitt, Ives said the new AirPods will be released in time for the holiday shopping season this year and may also feature some unspecified design enhancements. AirPods have had the same design since the original pair launched in December 2016.
Now that’s what I call a bold prediction. “May also feature some unspecified design enhancements.”
I’ll go out on a limb and say right here and right now that if Apple releases new AirPods, they WILL feature unspecified design enhancements. Otherwise they won’t be “new AirPods.”
