Perhaps you've not been using bluetooth headphones with your Apple Watch and iPhone, having to un-pair re-pair when changing sources (especially annoying before a workout at the gym).

Yeah, anyone who doesn't see a breakout in the industry as huge doesn't use bluetooth headphones. They have been the bane of listening for years. The pairing, disconnecting, reconnecting, unpairing, repairing, gross gross gross.

I never understand why people get so pissed off about this.

Not everyone works M-F 9-5. And even if someone does take a day off to stand in line, seriously...

Who. The. Hell. Cares?
Jealous cause they can't get to an Apple Store at 10am to get the Airpods... I know I am.

It boggles my mind people are waiting in line for these. $169 seems awful pricey for something like this

Thanks for sharing. You have a 3 year old iphone, 4 year old computer, and many other outdated products per your profile. Maybe those of us who are excited are a little more into having the latest and greatest technology when it comes out. Early adopters always pay a premium.

These definitely aren't for me but I'm impressed at how Apple came up with a design/feature set that would allow these to sell so well for $159.

Dallas North Park Center AirPods sold out -- they had about 35 and sold them immediately upon opening. Don't even try if you are not online before the store opens.

Thank you for the informative and kind reply. ;)

Personally, I am OK with no controls on the Airpods...On my Plantronics BT headset, I am constantly accidentally hitting the power off instead of the volume and that becomes a mess! Another set I had also had touch volume controls that would touch wrong and start a pairing process or such. I'm happy with using the iPhone to control volume.

Same here, I don't mind using the iPhone (or Mac etc) to change the volume. You do have some options on the AirPods with regards to controls. Double tapping an AirPod is an action that can trigger one of two things: 1. Enable Siri 2. Pause/Resume. So you do have some basic set up you can do (you can also completely disable this functionality as well).

FYI. Changing this functionality is not as intuitive to find as I expected you have to go to Settings > Bluetooth > tap the i next to the AirPods.

Also the double tap feels slightly different than I expected. It is based on a gyroscope (I assume) rather than a touch interface so you have to give it a good tap rather than just lightly touching them.

They tapped a pain point of bluetooth... there are tons of BT headphones, but they all have serious flaws... cords, neck straps, battery issues, poor pairing etc. These solve all those. Anytime a company can solve a problem plaguing a product, that's a win win for everyone. Now the others on the market will have to actually compete and not just exist. Look at TMOBILE. They suck, but they're solving a lot of the pain points people have with the wireless industry. ATT and VZW have had to become a lot more consumer friendly and be competitive as a result.

What aren't they updating their stock in the app?

Never for new products.

They are expensive but they are also kind of on par with what's on the market currently. But you're also talking about the customer that buys $650 ENTRY LEVEL smartphones, $299 ENTRY LEVEL smart Watches, $1500 ENTRY LEVEL laptops. $169 might actually fair in that perspective. But IMO they aren't worth more that $99 tops. I'm still getting them but I put down $50 in Best Buy rewards so mine are only costing me 120 after tax... which is still too much.

It's probably too early to claim that. Apple has enough devotees to guarantee som level of enthusiasm for any product launch. Let's see what people think of these earpods in a year. The enthusiasm may disappear quite quickly (just look at Apple Watch). Out of all the new features automatic pairing is something that seems unquestionably useful. The rest of the features do not look special (and sound quality apparently is still sub-par).

Uh oh - I jogged 3 miles to the Apple Store (I was the guy in the blue Nike hoodie behind you) to get a pair to supprise my fiancé who's birthday is the same week as Christmas. Hopefully she doesn't read macrumors and see me in that picture and spoil the surprise. She wants them so bad I might have to wrap them and give them to her tonight.

Glad to see another MacRumors contributor was in line with me

I'm a bit disappointed that mine won't be delivered until tomorrow and they are shipping from a city only 100 miles from me. In store today, but Apple couldn't get my pre-ordered ones to me by today.

Interesting, as I called the Georgetown store (in D.C. for Christmas) right when they opened and the Apple employee told me that they didn't have any stock and they didn't know when they were going to receive any more stock.
They had at least 30-40. The initial line I think plowed through it. I got mine there.

But what if you're socially nervous and would rather change the volume discreetly? I usually turn volume way down before walking into a building or public transport, I get super self conscious about other people hearing my music because I absolutely hate it when I can hear someone else's. It's such an obnoxious thing.

Luckily you can turn down the volume on your Apple Watch ⌚️️
