This are consistently available at Best Buy here, usually with no wait. I got my last pair 2 days after ordering.

It's an interesting thought but there's a much stronger explanation: their margins are minimal to nothing on this product, so why would they rush to sell more when they make no profit? Another issue, once we have anchored to this price point, it's hard to raise the price for future models.

What is your source for claiming their margins are razor thin?

Well for starters, the competition hasn’t been able to sell their own wireless earbuds for less than the Airpods. You have other options costing as much as twice what the Airpods are currently retailing at. And this is in an industry where it’s considered suicide to price your products higher than what Apple offers.

Supply (artificially controlled since release ) eased for now..

Pure ignorance. And you think a 43 billion dollar company is artificially controlling the AirPods based on what evidence? That's a daft claim. So was Apple artificially controlling the Apple Watch and iPhone 6 launch as well?

In the end, still no thank you. The short usable time per charge and the potential for losing ONE earbud makes me not interested in buying the AirPod. That's why I got the Pioneer Rayz Plus Lightning-port in-ear headphones instead, especially with the ability to recharge my iPhone through the built-in Lightning charging connector.

Five hours is short? Especially with the rapid recharge? 0%-100% in 25 minutes. You can listen >55 minutes per hour literally around the clock.

Your loss...

I’ve had mind since release and the battery life and potetional loss are non-issues because they live in the case (potential for loss removed) and start at 100% charge each time you take them out.

And even if you DO run them out in a single session, you can alternate one in the case and one in the ear because they ingeniously automatically switch to mono and even phone calls works as each has a mic. This makes battery life unlimited in practice.

silent nighttime viewing with ATV
I like this too, but the pairing is not as simple, it is not easy to switch from ATV to iPhone when needed.

Yep this is my biggest complaint. They made switching easier in iOS 11 on ATV (I have the public beta) as you can usually pull down audio menu while a video is playing and select AirPods there. However there are still a fair number of times you have to go into Settings and reconnect them.

Saw ten or fifteen pairs on the wall of my local Apple Store today!

Lots of evidence, do your own research and don't let my sources influence you.

That's what I thought, but wanted to confirm I hadn't missed any sources.

Maybe true, but still just speculation. I don't know either, but when has Apple sold a new product, that no one else can match, with huge demand, for a tiny markup?

Only one they want to prove that they have courage, and are helping subsidize the lack of headphone jacks on all of their new phones.

The Airpods are used both to lock in users in the ecosystem (W1) chip and with the low price to entice people to switch.

They couldn't do that with an expensive high margin product, but with an accessory that's used by Android and IOS users they can.

So, the reason the airpods would have a thin margin is specific to the product and nothing else.

The Watch is too expensive a product, more niche and harder to use for as non IOS user so it can't be used for that.

Well, the Rayz Plus--especially if you use the iOS app provided by Pioneer to adjust the EQ--sounds WAY better than the AirPod. And you get full electronic noise cancellation. And you don't have to deal with charging another device, since the Rayz Plus is powered directly off the Lightning port.

The AirPod looks like an interesting idea, but the relatively short life per charge and the fear of losing one of those little earbuds does concern me. And given the shape of the earbud, the sound quality is not as good as people think, especially its shape is almost the same as the EarPod, which I found a bit disappointing for listening to music.

I cannot wear that style headphone. I've tried a number of them, and they've all been uncomfortable and unstable. Besides, the Rayz Plus are not wireless. I could hardly plug them into my Apple Watch when I go on a run without my iPhone.

Noise cancellation would be nice, and I expect that in a future version.

NOT having to deal with another device I have to plug into a charger--which is the case of all wireless headphones--was why I ended up with the Rayz Plus. (I also was not thrilled the AirPod uses its own proprietary charger.) I did, however, replace the Pioneer-provided ear tips with the Comply Foam Comfort 400 TSX tips, which have a really nice, comfortable fit I can wear all day.

Doesn't matter how big a company is, it's doctored supply chain management to create a perception of demand and want.
