It seems those choosing to upgrade or not upgrade fall into two categories:

1) "I own the first gen, but bought them so early on that the battery has degraded." This is a great and valid reason to upgrade. It must be rough only having 30min-1 hour between charges, so it's just time to get a new pair. No reason to wait another 9-12 months, it will be an annoying wait.

2) "I own the first gen, but I haven't owned them that long, so I'll wait til gen 3". Valid reason to not upgrade. While 'hey siri' and wireless charging is nice, if your battery is still good, it is a harder sell.

Just depends on how itchy you are to upgrade, or how important those features are. I know very well how the upgrade bug can hit. So you do you if you want to upgrade to have the latest and greatest!

For those who don't own the first gen and are on the fence - I have only owned mine for about 6 months. My regret is 'what took me so long', because they are great. For the money, sure, there are better sounding headphones for music. In fact, I own 2-3 headphones that cost over this $200 price, both wired and wireless, and of the open and closed headphone variety. However, my AirPods are by far my most used headphones because of the convenience and the 'it just works' magic that Apple nailed with this. To simply open the case and start listening without any bluetooth syncing or on/off switches, and the ease of putting them away is just too good.

And then there's me, the third category:

3) "I own the first gen, but bought them so early that the battery has degraded. Additionally the right AirPod sounds broken & muddy compared to the left. Also two days ago I accidentally washed them in the washing machine so now they're completely dead."

Really? My current AirPods battery works just fine.

That's great. Mine go through multiple charge cycles a day and now can only hold about 2 hours before they need recharging again. But I've used them heavily from the day I got them, so from my perspective I'm getting great value from them.

unless you have busted AirPods, or no AirPods, sorry I just don't see the hype for AirPods v2 in its form.

Even buying a wireless charger case, for your v1 airPods if you really crave that, seems more justifiable than v2 hype.

Yes, its AirPods. and yes its generation 2. but I dunno? shrug, I'll be holding off on this one if at all possible (i.e. hope that my v1 still work well enough/last up until v3, etc)

I totally agree for those who is happy with the v1 has no or little reason to upgrade, unless hands free "Hey Siri" and additional talking time are must for you. So for those who later to the AirPods party, it will be great buy to get the wireless charging case. My recent traveling and working activities made me to seriously looking into the AirPods, with the new release, I order one with wireless charging case this morning. Hopefully it will hold the 4/27-29 delivery dates, not like my XS delivery ended up nearly two weeks of delay.

I just ordered 2 pair. Both with wireless charging case. Will these charge on the standard Qi disc shaped chargers? I sure hope so.

I've had original AirPods since launch. Love them, but can't see myself upgrading right now. Not worth it.

Indeed, I've been eyeing-up some $350 Sony noise cancelling 'cans' for months. My work environment has changed and I'm now in a noisy office (Think trading room floor and you won't be far off! :). Silence would be bliss.

Still love the AirPods when outside of course. Horses for courses.

Am I the only one who's waiting for the black colored AirPods?

No I wanted black too. I have a current order with ColorWare for blue AirPods and I have black from them now, plus a white pair. I just ordered these from Apple but I don’t see the charging mat out yet. I sure hope they announce it tomorrow. Likely don’t want us to see both prices at the same time less we get sticker shock.

Sick of paying colorware for painting these. They take at least two months to do it and they charge twice the price. Really wish Apple would just give us colors to choose from.

Apparently there is some concern over the frequency of Bluetooth on the ear canal cells which needs further study. I'll stick to wired ones until they make a definitive conclusion.... so basically I am not one of their targeted customers and could care less about delivery dates slipping.

My thoughts exactly. I actually sold my AirPods after about year of use for two reasons:

1. Connectivity issues and lag that I always experienced when switching between devices.
2. Frequency that has often resulted in headaches, which I never get with the wired earbuds.

There’s no doubt that there’s more EMF exposure to wearing AirPods vs traditional wired earbuds. And now with 5G approaching, our brains are literally going to fry.

Where does the H1 stand for? H-ealth maybe? New updates coming soon? Why didn’t they follow the W1 chipset naming

H1 stands for „headphones” in my oppinion, the previous chip was „W1” and it was in AirPods ver. 1, and apple watches, now they developed the new chip to differ.

I might be my own category...

Despite me saying I would never in a million years buy these when the gen1 AirPods were released, I now have a gen2 pair on their way to me.

I don't plan on doing any music listening at all with these however. Since the first AirPods were released, I now own 2 additional Macs and an AppleWatch 4 which has changed my opinion on owning AirPods.

The sole purpose of these will be easy connection to my iMac, 2018 15" MacBook Pro, 12" MacBook, AppleWatch and iPhone for the many GotoMeetings, Slack calls and phone calls that I do across all these devices.

For music my $1000 Shure SE846 (that don't speak Apple AirPods broke) with my iFi iDSD DAC are still my goto setup. Also have a pair of bluetooth 5 ZOLO somethingorothers that have ok water resistance for working out or yard work that are actually sound isolating and have ok sound for disgusting bluetooth quality music.

For pure convenience of audio calls I am now an AirPods owner. I am disappointed not to have black matte coating... Regular earpods from apple don't fit great in my ears, so we will see how AirPods do.

They don’t have any dac.... why would there be one in headphones .....
The DAC in Bluetooth headphones takes the digital audio data supplied by the Bluetooth radio receiver and converts it to analog audio. That audio signal is then amplified and fed to basically a small speaker, which produces the sound waves you hear.

Except on those occasions when they don't hand over correctly... or aren't recognized by my watch even though I just got done with a phone call I initiated from the watch, resulting in having to restart both the watch and phone... or the strange audio drop outs that seem to occur at random times, making it hard to pinpoint actions that might be contributing to said drop outs...

Don't get me wrong, I love these things but there are certainly times when I don't.

I get exactly what you mean, but I get exactly what the other commenter means. You may be in a very fraction minority. I had mine since day one they were launched and so far zero issues. For me, they just work!"

Wireless charging does not sound like an added convenience to me. For one thing the case does not need to be charged too frequently; once a day at most if I’m using them a lot, or once a week while I’m at home and use them a couple of hours every night watching some videos before bedtime.

But most importantly, I need as little paraphernalia as possible to carry while I travel and certainly carrying a wireless charging mat is not going to be one of them. I carry a small multi port usb charger to charge my iPhone, my iPad, my watch and the iPod case that’s it.

I’m not convinced that the wireless charging for the iPad is an added benefit.

Wow, Australia take another one from behind in exchange rates. Putting that in perspective for our American viewers, not so long ago the AUD/USD was on parity so we paid the same price as the US. Now, as an example, the MacBook Air cost $1,199 in USA but in Australia it is $1,849. Airpods incredibly are $319 here, $129 just for the case.

This is how i feel. And i am not getting a new pair just to say hey Siri. If i want a wireless charger for my existing AirPods. I will buy a charger for ten or twenty bucks on Amazon that works for with my old airpods.

Similar story for Canada. At least crossing the border to shop in the US is possible for most parts of Canada, unlike Australia.
