Just a month before the 2 year warranty on mine ran out, they were replaced with a brand new ones because the battery life dropped to 3 hours.

I guess I’m good for another 2 years before these wear out and by then Apple will have the 4th gen AirPods out hopefully fully waterproofed and in black.

wait......The Airpods have a 2 year warranty???

Must be consumer protection laws? or we're just getting reared?
It has to do with the consumer protection law in my country but there's also a separate consumer protection law for the European Union so they can't break a law without pissing the EU off or the country where I live.

I remember that, from my memories, apple offered compensation in this situation.

They absolutely did not offer any compensation. They extended the return policy to 30 days, but it was discontinued when the 4th launched. It was a huge burn to people who bought the 3.

No black, no buy.

I agree. Aside from the fact that they were not exactly the most impressive second version after two years since December 2016, if Apple would have offered at least a slate version color, I would have made the purchase today. I still think the AirPods are a great product, this is more of a ‘S’ type model of the AirPods, but I do look forward to see what the more ‘revamped’ model looks like hopefully in 2020.

Got ’em! Have heard nothing but good things about these and have always waited for gen2 products from Apple. Stoked.

It seems those choosing to upgrade or not upgrade fall into two categories:

1) "I own the first gen, but bought them so early on that the battery has degraded." This is a great and valid reason to upgrade. It must be rough only having 30min-1 hour between charges, so it's just time to get a new pair. No reason to wait another 9-12 months, it will be an annoying wait.

2) "I own the first gen, but I haven't owned them that long, so I'll wait til gen 3". Valid reason to not upgrade. While 'hey siri' and wireless charging is nice, if your battery is still good, it is a harder sell.

Just depends on how itchy you are to upgrade, or how important those features are. I know very well how the upgrade bug can hit. So you do you if you want to upgrade to have the latest and greatest!

For those who don't own the first gen and are on the fence - I have only owned mine for about 6 months. My regret is 'what took me so long', because they are great. For the money, sure, there are better sounding headphones for music. In fact, I own 2-3 headphones that cost over this $200 price, both wired and wireless, and of the open and closed headphone variety. However, my AirPods are by far my most used headphones because of the convenience and the 'it just works' magic that Apple nailed with this. To simply open the case and start listening without any bluetooth syncing or on/off switches, and the ease of putting them away is just too good.

I think I fall into a different category. I haven't bought the first generation because I had an iPhone 6s and I wasn't compelled to buy the iPhone 7 because of the headphone jack. 3 years later I am annoyed by the wired headphones and after buying the iPhone XS and giving a try to wireless charging I prefer the convenience of an almost wireless future. I hope that they will get rid of the charging port by 2022 and that wireless charging will be as fast as fast charging.

Good question. As these chips are specifically for headphones, I wouldn’t be surprised to find there’s a higher performing DAC.
I wonder if the new chip comes with Bluetooth 5.0. I hope it does because the chip is more power efficient so it looks like it comes with Bluetooth 5.0.

I placed an order this morning for the Airpods with Wireless Charging Case and is now preparing for Shipment.

With the battery issues lots have reported, is there any sense in buying a wireless charging case for the current gen?
Depends on whether your gen1 AirPods have crappy battery life yet. If they do, the wireless case won't help a lot.

That said, I've seen reports that some have managed to get their AirPods replaced by their credit card 'extended warranty' just short of two years after purchase, after reporting decreased battery life and increased connection loss.

If you were able to do that, maybe purchasing a wifi case to go along with a replacement pair of AirPods might be useful.

Pretty much depends on whether not plugging in is worth $40.

I had guessed as much BUT it’s not listed. So it makes me wonder if it’s a proprietary connection such that it won’t work with non-Apple devices. I mean, if they have numbers saying that NO ONE bought the original ones to connect to non-Apple devices, then why not just take advantage of that fact?

It’s not like “Hey Siri” would work with anything other than iOS anyway...

I think the reviewers will figure it out as soon as they arrive in the hands of the customers. I expect iFixit to do a teardown, or a new leak might provide more information about Bluetooth 5.0 availability or not.

I get it, but there's ALWAYS a reason to wait on buying a newly released tech product because the next one is ALWAYS being discussed. When it's released is anybody's guess.

Oh I agree. I was just pointing out that yearly or less updates do happen.

Except on those occasions when they don't hand over correctly... or aren't recognized by my watch even though I just got done with a phone call I initiated from the watch, resulting in having to restart both the watch and phone... or the strange audio drop outs that seem to occur at random times, making it hard to pinpoint actions that might be contributing to said drop outs...

Don't get me wrong, I love these things but there are certainly times when I don't.

Clear out the voodoo somehow and they will be flawless. I have multiple Apple TVs and I went through many Apple watches and I always have the latest iPhones and the crazy things are uncanny at picking out what I want them to do and just magically seem to do what I need them to do with zero effort. I pushed that button on the case one time about a year ago, I forget what it’s even for, and I’ve gone through three iPhones and three Apple watches and bought it about three Apple TVs now that I think about it and I’m actually quite surprised how awesome the AirPods pair up to the thing I wanted to make the sound come out of. Best Apple product for a long time I would say
