That's a possibility.
It seems unusual that the new AirPods, which will be a popular product, will have a reference to an Apple product that has not yet been released, and which Apple has not directly acknowledged since September 2017. Has that ever happened before?
I'm aware that the Xs and Xs Max had a reference to AirPower.
I wrote in a previous post that I would be surprised if they discussed AirPower at the event yesterday. That leaves the rest of this week to quietly announce, and then as more time passes, the greater chance it may happen at WWDC.
I think the iPhone 7 mentioned AirPods in the paperwork, several months before they were released? I may be mistaken.
I can't see why they would announce it so soon after the last flurry of announcements.
From a purely practical perspective, there surely won't be any material difference in what they know internally between last week and this week (e.g. last week it wasn't shippable, this week it is). So they could have announced it last week if they wanted to.
From a PR standpoint, I can't see them wanting to bury it. However late it arrives it will still be unique and impressive and I'm sure they will be marketing it, so there is little point trying to hush it up.
And if they wanted to hush it up, they could have just put it as a footnote of the AirPods press release.
Additionally, when other products have missed ship dates, Apple has acknowledged it. AirPods first gen:
"The early response to AirPods has been incredible. We don’t believe in shipping a product before it’s ready, and we need a little more time before AirPods are ready for our customers." (
TechCrunch)
HomePod:
"We can't wait for people to experience HomePod, Apple's breakthrough wireless speaker for the home, but we need a little more time before it's ready for our customers." (
The Verge)
Almost an identical statement. Yet we haven't heard the above for AirPower.
Overall, I don't think Apple even knows when it's going to be ready.
But the messaging has been terrible. There should have been some expectation management, even if just to avoid the disappointment last week. All it needed was a little controlled leak to Gruber and Gurman that AirPower wasn't coming any time soon, and us nerds would have known not to get our hopes up. At least, that's what they did in the good old days!
