Why did folks say the mini would have A7 and the iPad A7X, what is the difference in it being X? It doesn't seem to be X FWIW

Im getting one for sure.

I was first in line for the ipad 1 but gave it to my dad after a year. Just too bulky and heavy. Following iPads had the same issue for me.

This is the ipad I always wanted, one that i would actually bring along and the processing power is awesome for picture / video editing while travelling.

Just pondering between white or black..hmmm...

Im on the fence. Maybe, but not right away. Ill wait for the inevitable early reports to make sure all is good. Gotta make sure battery life, heat, etc, etc is all solid. Im sure it will be.

But, by the time Im done with big storage and LTE support.... Im gonna have a $900 iPad. Holy shiat!

:D

They're getting to the point where there will no longer be major upgrades every year. In the future the improvements will be more incremental. Better camera here, faster processor there, better battery,.... The only other things they can add that would be truly big improvements (at leas in my humble opinion) are a Wacom-style digitizer and multiple open windows on the screen at a time. This is the 2013 version of the iPad air. Next year will be the 2014 version and so on.

Yup, it's a maturing product. When was the last time there was a truly amazing laptop upgrade, year on year? You could argue the original Air was breathtakingly thin relatively......but it was also an absolute turd with a slow hdd, cpu and overheated...

Not enough of an upgrade...

The iPad Air looks great but not enough for me to drop my almost 1yearold iPad4, there just isn't enough for me to justify getting it. I wanted 2GB RAM and TouchID, I've got a feeling that early next year Apple will do to this iPad Air what they did to the iPad3.

This will be a nice upgrade for those coming from a iPad 1, 2 or old Mini. :)

I was thinking that another iPad was going to be coming in early 2014 when they said "iPad Air". Wife seems to think otherwise. I just want a 15 inch iPad with better photo/video storage and editing. I'm having a hard time deciding between the Air and the Mini w/ Retina though. The only differences are size of screen and dimensions. Weight is 1.05lbs for the Air vs 0.75lbs for the mini w/ Retina. So bigger screen with about a quarter pound more weight or smaller device with same specs?

This is the one I've been waiting for. Grabbing a 16GB Cellular the day they come out.

...and by "the day they come out", I mean that I'm setting my alarm for 1:58am CST to order within seconds of availability. I did that with the 5S and had it within a few days.

Anandtech hands on Ipad air : So much lighter. Compared to mini , it doesn't feel as bulky and heavy as ipad 4. Edge definitely helps in holding. This is just as good as mini. Feels like a big ipad mini. Feels ridiculous when you say it :D . Performance is excellent in infinty blade 3. Graphics feel upscaled. Everything is really really fast :D. Enough said ;).

How much ram does it have? I've not seen any sources talk about it yet. You usually have to wait for a teardown to find out.

EDIT: There has to be something different about it to justify the price difference between it and the retina mini.

It's fantastic to see the ipad mini with the same specs as the air.

Was hoping out for the mini, but 'Coming later in November' and a £80 price difference buts be more on the Air side.

I'm shocked there wasnt a fingerprint sensor, besides that I really like it but my iPad 3 will last at least another year.

Yes, definitely getting one. iPad Air for me, and maybe mini Retina for my kids (when the old one is sold at a good price).

Just like last year, stage is set for a mid-cycle refresh.

iPad 3 --> iPad 4:
update A5X to A6X and harmonize hardware to new "lightning" connector. Set the stage for A7 iPhones and A7/A7X iPads.
(6 months)

iPad Air --> iPad Air 2:
update to A7X/8 and harmonize hardware to new "TouchID" sensor; And set the stage for A8 iPhones.
(6 months)

Reports have even indicated that, at this point, TouchID sensor supply is too constrained to cover iPhones and iPads. But maybe X moniker is gone because 64-bit.

I'm not an apple hater but you have to be seriously delusional at apple's mobile division:

1) keeping ipad 2 (30pin dock) and selling for $399. This is just asinine if you are buying this thing in end of 2013 era.

2) apple is just sitting on their laurels. The ipad line up is just pathetic. The new ipads use the same A7 but leaves out touchID, no wireless AC, no resolution difference in screen quality, no new camera, not even 720p slow mo since the A7 can handle it, nothing but the same retina screen shrunken down.

3) The new ipad air is equally shet. IT's 1lb now. Ooh and ahh. Seriously, if the ipad was so bad in weight there would not be 100 millions sold so far. Sure it's lighter but there's just nothing else added in.

4) The pricing is just ludicrous while you have very very awesome tablets from samsung notes, other manufacturers that offer a ton more.

I just sold my iphone 5 and got a note 3. I'm telling you, 4K video is just the tip of the iceberg icing cake here. There is everything wonderful about having a 5.7" hand holdable one hand usable behemoth that does everything right and well and more advanced than any iOS 7 device can do.

I don't want to point out the flaws of iOS 7 but seriously, after steve jobs passed, apple just doesn't know what to do and this proves it.

iOS 7 is just lipstick on a pig that is on its 7 year too old out the door type pig. The competition has caught up and overtaken apple at what they do best: software & hardware integration.

I'm sorry, but the only thing the ipad has left is the ipad apps that are fantastic and the ecosystem (airplay, itunes radio, itunes match). That's about it.

I sat thru this entire presentation and can't help but shake my head in disbelieft this is all apple has to come up with in one year's time to upgrade. We know you are here to make money apple, but seriously, this is just greedy.

Sorry but my next tablets will have to be alternatives because I cannot and will not enjoy iOS 7 on their tablet. It's such a waste of precious space and it's pathetically boring and lacks so many advanced features that I'd like compared to even my phablet note 3.

You guys who are raving about these new ipads seriously need to go out and try and use the competition for an extensive period of time. You'd be surprised like how I am now with the competition.

In your opinion, what is the best alternative tablet?

I'm thinking no A7X because it's a A7 with perhaps faster GPU clocks to make up for the Retina resolution.. The GPU in the A7 is already a wickedly fast one.. An X would just institute a better GPU and it was perhaps not necessary.

Or like others, maybe a iPad Pro eventually but I doubt this year.
