Why continue the Plus model at all, considering the new iPhone 8 or whatever it is called will have a bigger (5.8”) and better (OLED) screen, all in a smaller body? The price difference between the two should not be much different either, unless they price 8 super high. What is the target market for 7S Plus then?

Paul Bunyan. :apple:

So you'd be getting a larger screen in a more compact size, kind of the best of both worlds.
the screen isn't really larger, only the height is longer. mostly useless because you see the home button. a 5.8" screen with 4:3 would be great.

So what are we expecting the differences to be between the 7S and 8? 8 gets OLED screen and face ID?

Why would you choose a 7S+ over the more “revolutionary” 8?
I can't respond for @dantracht but I oppose to Apple putting all efforts into overcoming earlier lamentation.
Getting rid of bezels should have been done 3/4 years ago. Developing the best screen technology should have started 10 years ago. Getting rid of the headphone port to "accomodate a haptic engine" is absolute nonsense: iPhone 6 had it already and it was OK.
Now (as rumors are true) they fiddle and hample around every square millimeter to implement touchID or its replacement (who said that touchID wasn't good enough?) because they want to go from crazy big bezels to no bezels at all (who said that was necessary ?)
This seems lots of energy and crazy manufact/provisioning costs going into marginal improvement at cost of far more relevant new features (far better battery life, flap-out double screens, self-repairing nano materials, etc. there is 10.000's of patents laying unused there) and/or landmark new design.
That's what I am waiting for.
The 3D cam is nice but I don't need it. For a good cam, I'd go to Samsung/Sony (if they had iOS...)
And if "shortages" occur, that's no extra appetizer/excitement for me.
I can only say a 10 year anniversary could have been better anticipated, in that case.

I'm thinking of the 7S+ too. Why would I choose a phone that doesn't have touch ID when I can get one that does?

I also just tend to get the "S" phones, since they are an improvement on the new design. You miss out on the excitement of the new design, but you get the most refined phone you can get. I know there are others like me. And it will probably still be cheaper as well.

A new supply chain report today described strong July sales for component suppliers in the iPhone supply chain, hinting at an increase in momentum for production on the 2017 iPhones. Furthermore, sources speaking with DigiTimes have said that all three of the new iPhones -- the "iPhone 8," "iPhone 7s," and "iPhone 7s Plus" -- have now entered volume production.

The supply chain sources mentioned that there "will not be shortages" for the LCD iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus, but supply for the OLED iPhone 8 "could fall short of demand," a sentiment we've been hearing for months. One of the major factors cited for this shortage is related to "high expectations" from users, which is expected to keep suppliers operating production lines in high gear and lead to record-breaking monthly and even quarterly sales volumes.

Specifically, main Apple suppliers Foxconn, Pegatron, and Wistron are believed to hit a sales high in the September-November period, due to shipments of finished iPhones predicted to "start gaining momentum" as soon as this month. In other recent production-related news, we heard about Samsung and its plan to operate seven OLED panel lines at full capacity in August, all of them dedicated to Apple's iPhone 8.

A recent investor note by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo mentioned that Apple will begin production verification tests on the iPhone 8 at the end of August, with mass production beginning in mid-September. Kuo further believed that Apple will announce all three iPhones simultaneously in September, as well as launching them for purchase all on the same day. As usual, the OLED iPhone 8 is predicted to be in short supply, and recent reports have suggested shipments between 2 to 4 million units will be available at launch.

Also shared today by Sonny Dickson (via 9to5Mac) are a few alleged images of each new 2017 iPhone. The images focus on the all-glass rear design of the devices, a rumor that's been circulating since the October 2016 for both the iPhone 8 and the LCD iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus. The glass backs of the new iPhones will allow the devices to wirelessly charge when placed on a charging receptacle of some kind, similar to the Apple Watch's inductive charging feature.

The images show the large 5.5-inch iPhone 7s Plus, 4.7-inch iPhone 7s, and in-between 5.8-inch iPhone 8, which has a form factor near the size of the 4.7-inch iPhone and a screen slightly larger than the Plus models. The iPhone 8 will also have a vertically aligned dual lens rear camera to help boost augmented reality features, while the iPhone 7s Plus will retain the horizontal dual lens system of the previous generation.

That colour is actually Bronze, not copper. That means Bronze and Silver. Maybe there is no Gold because it looks gaudy on glass.
iPhone8,or X, or Pro, or Edition in Bronze will probably be the most in demand colour at launch as it's the only one which really screams "New iPhone here".

There is no iPhone 8 form factor.
Just a iPhone 6 ver. 3 (as you might have observed as you have the ver. 2 in your hands)
Some may like it (obviously, as they have little choice...)
Others will say that this is the proof of the ultimate lackluster design culture at the current Apple
I agree, those rectangular phones with a big glass screen on the front are so boring.
Time to get a round one or a triangle one.

You've answered your own question there.

My main concern remains the potential price of the iPhone 8.

If it's above £800, it's a no go for me. A phone is a phone and truthfully, there aren't many things my 6S plus can't do that the iPhone 8 will be able to.

Honestly I'd normally be all in for the highest tier device no matter what. This time around, while the new face is better than the old face, the only thing I truly think would justify the price would be the 120Hz screen and higher res. That will be the only thing that pushes me to the iPhone 8. I'm expecting the camera to be better too, and not just have AR features that are not available on the 7S. However I'm not even sure if that's true.

I gotta imagine they're going to change the naming this year, because what happens next year if they release the same type of lineup? 7s can't really jump to the 8 category, even if 8 jumps to 9.

Judging by the ipad and other products, my guess is that the iphone 7s will just be "iphone" and "iphone plus" and the 8 will be the "iphone pro"
That sounds quite logical. They could also go
7s, 7S Plus, X/Edition/Pro

and next year they'll have
8, 8 plus, X/Edition/Pro2

or more likely next year we'll have
8 and 8 Plus with included improved technology from the X/Edition/Pro. Which also means 5.8 and 6.3 inch iPhones.

"Shortage at launch" is nothing new.

I've upgraded every year since the iPhone 3G, and have always had a very tough time getting a new phone on launch day. The last few years have been particularly difficult, especially when I tried to order a 7 Plus in jet black. A week after I put in that order, I cancelled it and ordered a matte black phone which was slated to ship far sooner (even a week after ordering began).

So, of course there will be a shortage at launch. The only question will be "how bad". I'm guessing no worse than last year.
My 7 Plus in Jet Black actually was delivered within 3 days of launch. I met an employee of my operator two weeks or so later and he had no idea how this was even possible as they were told they wouldn't have any for weeks.
I remember him saying "that's not a phone, that's a unicorn".

These rumors are ridiculous. I can see Jonny and Tim reading Macrumors on their lunch break, laughing their pants off at the chinese rumors of "7s" and "8." Why on any planet would Apple, of all companies, confuse the naming convention of the phone? That is ridiculous. They will choose one or the other, but not both. Also, the Sonny Dickson photo is LITERALLY an iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus that he has taken some fine-grit sand paper to the corners, which is also ridiculous. The "iPhone 8" in the photo is the most accurate depiction. This could very well be the year that only one size is released, because it will be a + size screen in a smaller chassis, similar to the smaller flagship size. There will be no need for 2 screen sizes, which will also dramatically improve performance for the new flagship phone. Apple will continue to offer the 7 and 7+ as cheaper alternates.

I think you are going to be the only person shocked.

If the screen is bigger, isn't that the better option for you? Why do you want a bigger overall phone?

The 7+ has a bigger usuable screen real estate. 5.5", whereas the OLED iPhone 8 will only have 5.15" of usable screen real estate. The biggest difference is the width of the 7+, which makes it feel a lot more spacious.

I really like that idea of them reading MR.
If they would only do that once in 3 years, how much better would the product portfolio be..

so then get iphone 8?? i have 7 plus i like

If you like the 7+, you will probably feel like the iPhone 8 is a little small. I can't tell you that with 100% confidence because everyone is different, but the iPhone 8 will be closer to the iPhone 7 in width, than the iPhone 7+, and width is usually where people feel the difference in spaciousness.

I would use the phone's in person before making a decision, but the safer decision is a 7S+, if you need to make a decision before trying.

The size of the 8 very much appeals to me, coming from a 6 Plus which I feel is just a tiny bit too big to hold comfortably.

Hahahaha in that photo the 'rumoured' iPhones 8 looks significantly bigger then the iPhone 7, yet we have had endless rumours apparently claiming it'll be very similar in size to the iPhone 7... we'll looking at this photo they all may as well have said it's very similar in size to the 7 Plus!!!!!

Digitimes......lol

What's so funny? It's a rumored website where most of the sources on here are nothing more than speculation and analyst mudslinging. Digitimes has had some accurate predictions or reports in the past with the Apple Watch and iPhone.

The most reliable source would be Ming Kuo.
