Alleged iPhone 5S User Guide Photo Highlights Fingerprint Sensor As 'Touch ID'

Does anyone notice that the chrome ring around the home button is similar to the alleged black phone photos that were leaked a few days ago?

This phone probably isn't meant for iPhone 5 users. It's for the rest of us that are still using a iP4S or iP4 or even a 3GS.

For us it's a gigantic leap in performance.

That's exactly why I'm getting one.

I know everyone has they're preference as to "why" to upgrade. I wasn't eligible for an upgrade when iPhone 5 came out, and there's no way I'm paying full price. The biggest upgrade for the 5 (over my 4S) was the weight (as far as what mattered to me the most), so the 5S will be a big upgrade to me solely because of the faster processor and lighter weight. Anything else is a bonus.

Meh. Still a small low-resolution screen compared to everyone else, no user-replaceable/upgradeable battery, no SD slot, no notification LED, weak settings (SBSettings/Notification Bar-like but at least it has one now so there is some improvement), UI going back to the stone age (flat? really? But then, with the low resolution screen you can't afford to spend pixels on proper borders), still no IR blasters (you might say it's for nerds only but pick up an S4 and try WatchON - it's designed for real people not dorks! When Apple finally offers an IR blaster with included universal remote you people who claim it's only for nerds will suddenly proclaim it's a must-have and that Apple invented it), air gestures, OLED screen, widgets, multitasking (2 apps on screen at once!), better task management, USB Host Mode (excellent for tethering a camera!), folders in the photo gallery (ZOMG! Organization!), standardized Micro-USB port (which does support MHL), and so on.

Oh, 5S will deliver 250 hours standby time? Sure, if you turn off:
* location services
* notifications
* wifi
* mobile data

And don't touch the phone at all, it will stand by for 250 hours. That is no great feat. When my car is idling it draws only .2 GPH of fuel, and yet that is a meaningless spec because what I care about is how much fuel it consumes at 65MPH, and how much power and torque it produces from that fuel.

In the real world you actually use your phone. How long does the battery last under actual use?

Don't get me wrong - I like the iPhone. I have had two, and still own one (I gave the other away) but Apple really has let it stagnate, unless the rumors have been wrong and they have a larger iPhone and a host of the features Competitors already offer ready to be announced.

When all of the things you mentioned on the last phone are pretty much good enough for 90% out the people out there, not much is going to change with this 5S.

Now iO7, that is something to get excited about.

How many people (besides hard core tech geeks) actually upgrade their phones every year? I'm on a two year contract with my 5 so I won't be upgrading until next year.

You know, they make Android phones. You could get one and stop complaining. iPhones will not be getting removable batteries or SD slots ever, sorry.

I've yet to see any phone in person that gets better real-life battery life than my iPhone 5 though.

I know I'm a dozen or so pages late to this, but… 'Touch ID' doesn't really sound very Apple. Why wouldn't they call it 'iCloud Touch', or something less blandly generic? Unless they want to make this an *actual* standard (yes, FaceTime, I'm looking at you), in which case making it sound boring would encourage wide acceptance.

Big data is the problem here. On its own your SMS data might mean nothing, but combined with other data from other sources they might know a lot more than you think. It could result in unsolicited targeting of advertisements, but could also end with insurances changing their rates.

Example: you spend a lot of time in a bad neighbourhood with a lot of car- break-ins and your phone tracks your location and transmits this. That information could be bought by an insurer who increases his premiums on your policy. Not legal now, but who knows what is already being done illegally or what will be legalised in the future?

...but...I don't care.

It doesn't matter to any of you, it's illegal anyway. No one is out to get you.

Also if ads are targeted to me based on my interests, that's cool! I'd rather see ads that aren't completely useless to me

TouchID Ring

Anyone else notice the rings in the invite for today's event? Thinking they are going to make a big deal about their new "TouchID Ring".

grand, now can we please have the unlocked version in under 3 months?
thanks.

THANK.YOU! I was checking and waiting everyday for Apple to release the unlocked iPhone 5, but after 5 weeks of waiting, by the time they released the unlocked version, my 4s trade-in value dropped $150, and quite frankly, I lost interest.

I hope with all major carriers onboard Apple catches up with times and releases the unlocked version in a couple weeks time or so.

Of course they will.

iOS7 has iCloud Keychain, so Safari can generate strong passwords for you and sync them across your devices. The only weakness is that if somebody can access your device, they can access all your web services.

With a fingerprint sensor, Apple can quickly and easily authenticate you to solve that. They could ask for a fingerprint in Safari before it autofills the password and for the device itself.

They could also possibly get around PRISM by encrypting all data locally with your fingerprint as the key. The NSA might still be able to break the encryption but it'd be much more difficult.

I wonder when TouchID will appear on iMac's / laptops? Or would log-in by phone (in close proximity to the computer) ALSO log you into OS X?

Cool story, bro!

Maybe the ring will be some sort of notification element that is multicolor LED lit with circular color motion?
