The answer is easy: because it's none of their business.

But my fingerprint will do them absolutely nothing. It's not that it's "none of their business" they just plain don't care. People don't get that their lives aren't worth some government police putting them on a pedestal and watching everything you do.
They could do much worse than just look at your finger print but none of it matters to them.

Do people not get this?

How many people (besides hard core tech geeks) actually upgrade their phones every year? I'm on a two year contract with my 5 so I won't be upgrading until next year.

I am in the same boat I have one year to go after this month, so no updates this year. but I am sure the 6 and that bigger screen will be worth the wait.

You know, they make Android phones. You could get one and stop complaining. iPhones will not be getting removable batteries or SD slots ever, sorry.

I've yet to see any phone in person that gets better real-life battery life than my iPhone 5 though.

And aren't there a number of high end Android phones no longer offering removable battery and SD slot? Does the Nexus or HTC One offer this?

Maybe the ring will be some sort of notification element that is multicolor LED lit with circular color motion?

I was hoping it would be like the siri microphone icon in iOS6 that has that white pulse that circles around it when its thinking, since its gone in iOS7

Good point as well :)

I don't see the point of removable batteries to be honest. This isn't 2004 where a battery would only last a year with heavy use. And there are several solutions if you are in the extremely rare case where you will be without power for a long time.

I can see the point of an SD slot (kind of) but I've never run out of space on my 32gb phone since iTunes Match and Photostream were released.

When I'm a customer or potential everything is my concern when it comes to my money.

I dont care where the tech comes from or where the parts come from or the name of the people who signed the buy order. the product has the brand's logo on it and thats who I am expect to support the product. Do you drill down to the patents involved in the laser of your bluray player? No, you buy your preferred brand and enjoy life. Over thinking things that are beyond your control will lead to a miserable life. In this aspect, finger print technology has been around for decades, LG didnt invent it, so if you are going to praise the inventor you need to go beyond that last person who used it in a cellular device.

If apple calls this Touch ID a revolutionary technology then thats what it is, because they will be the first to implement it in a functional way.

Off topic..maybe

But lets step back out of our techno-shirts.
Get out of your biz suits..throw on some shorts
Go outside..and just breath in...deeply
close your eyes...smell the nature..and open it

maybe sometimes all this techno talk, we need a break and get back into reality sometimes....guys...its just a phone, its not like its your wife (well...wait..to some people it is...)

In relation to what I said above, we as people set the bar SOOO high that anything less is like your kid getting a A- instead of a A+, and now all H3ll broke loose

The iphone is a immaculate device, hand finished. Every detail, even to the space between the facetime and receiver, is all pinpoint down to the very milli inch . The design is flawless when you hold it in your hand, the perfect weight.

And the ios...wow. The fact that my 2 yr old son picked up the iPad, and now 4 months later can read all the alphabets and numbers now. wow

The fact that I can facetime my grandpa in the middle east that I have not seen in 12 years. wow

So again, lets step back, and look how amazing this device is guys. Really.

You're right. And it's easy to lose sight of what's been accomplished and how remarkable this device is in its current form. While this site certainly attracts quite a few fans, it's important to remember that these devices are meant to enhance our life, not define them. Somewhat hard to remember in the heat of the moment, with all of the excitement of the announcement today. :)

apple won't be storing your fingerprints -- they'll store a hashed string that represents the scan your device produces.

Finally some common sense. It's unlikely the device will even scan your thumbprint in the way that people think of a print, a nice black on white picture of all the ridges on your thumb. It will record the effect your thumb, and the pattern on it, has on this particular type of sensor and when a new thumb is put on the scanner, it will see if the effect is the same. That effect will be a function of your fingerprint, but you won't be able to go from effect back to a picture of a fingerprint.

It's more like throwing a rock into one side of a pond and measuring the size, frequency and pattern the waves hit the other side. Do it twice with the same rock, you can say it's the same rock but you can't start with the wave pattern and say the rock was actually a 3 pound plaster statue of Lady Gaga.

Taking failed technology and making it succeed isn't a problem, paying the rightful owners seems to be the problem. Suing people for technology/ideas you've stolen is pure hypocrisy .

Wtf are you talking about? Apple BOUGHT Authentec, lol.. they didn't steal the company. Obv, they own the rights to a fingerprint scanner and do not have to pay anybody for it.

Here is what I mean about blind fanboyism the phone hasn't even been released yet and it's revolutionary, tomorrow it doesn't work as advertised. If you can speculate so can everyone else.

Can't wait to hear the preposterous name Samsung decides to call this feature in their next smartphone...

Samsung Smart Square Finger Scanner Touch Whiz Galaxy Nebula Technology, probably.

Nah Samsung will come out with eye ball scanner.
