Are we getting so thin now that components are sticking out of the phone.

How thin is too thin, I think we have our answer.

I agree - though I'm hoping the reason for a protruding camera is not because they COULDN'T fit a good iSight camera in the device, but that they decided to greatly beef up the camera.

The iPhone gets marginally thinner while the camera gets thicker. Causes there to be a small protrusion. I'm not a huge fan, but can definitely live with it if there are tangible benefits.

I actually dont mind the protruding camera. Image quality is just too important for me to sacrifice it for a flush camera

I’m not an expert on optics (just a meager amateur photographer :) ), but I wonder if there isn’t some value in the lens being further out than the flash and/or not being flush/recessed? Like to reduce glare, and other flash related artifacts[?]

I know if you look at most [all?] P&S cameras, and certainly DSLRs, the lens surface is at least a few mm from the camera body, and the flash is set back a few mm.

And the mythical 5.5 iPhone 6L have no schematics? Why? Why? (sarcasm mode on)

He he he tic tac no 5.5 iPhone tic to no iPhablet...

Samsung and other Android makers rejoice at this scenario. Apple will be leaving the profitable revenues of those who find 4.7" too small to continue buying Android phones. Woo hoo!

Why is this a good thing? Tradition? Only one-size-fits-all makes sense? Apple can't manage more than 1 phone size? Apple doesn't like high margin profit? Apple doesn't want that bigger-screen business? A 5.5" screen phone should be held back for an upgrade next year (though that makes little sense with so many passionately against the size- why is it an "upgrade"?)? Etc.

Right. Because saying "7mm thin" is an Apple phenomenon. Sure. Only Apple fanboys speak like that. Of course.

I get 18,000 hits on this Google search: https://www.google.com/#q=samsung+%227mm+thin%22

It's not the fanboys, it's Apple.

Apple's new style is "make something that is ugly, adamantly defend it until everybody claims it's modern and clean".
Little secret 1: The current or older iPhone model that you think really is modern and clean was once the ugly new iPhone.

Little secret 2: Apple is not adamantly defending anything. They're not even acknowledging that these pictures represent any future product they plan to release. The adamant defense is happening inside your own mind (perhaps getting an early start on your transition to calling it "modern and clean").

Amazing how people can get so worked up over something they haven't even seen yet. Can't people at least wait for the phone to be announced before they start moaning about it?

Lol... Here you go.

Of course not. Because apple did it. It would be the most hideous thing ever if any other company did that.

If the camera sucks like the Nexus 5 AND still protrudes, I'll be pissed.

Heck....that camera sticks out and device is 8mm thick. Apple's talking less than 7mm AND bringing a better camera.

But more generalizations please....we all really love hearing them

Probably right, but don't forget Apple are motivated by profits, not sales numbers.

Say version A here has a 35% margin.
Say version B has a 30% margin, due to the bigger enclosure and battery.

Version A would then be 17% more profitable than Version B.
Say Apple estimate Version B would sell more, but only by 15%, then releasing Version A would be the best choice in order to maximize total profits.

WRONG. Apple are motivated by design and innovation, which the rest of the industry then makes a point of deciding "not to copy", whilst simultaneously doing so. If you think Apple are motivated by profits, I would say no - they are motivated by excellence and by doing the best they can, focusing intensely one one thing and making it the best they are able to, continuously refining and trying new ideas - that's what design IS, after all - iteration.

You've got it VERY VERY upside down, if you think their SOLE target is their ledger sheet.

Stop listening to those who say there will be no 5.5" model for sure. They don't know what they're talking about.

As for profits and Apple leaving them to Android....obviously YOU don't know what you're talking about...

The "would version B sell more than version A if both were available" question doesn't matter that much to Apple anyway. I think they care more about "would version B increase sales of iPhones in general" as in "would it make people not choose Android any more than version A"?

 GASP - a corporation motivated by making money!?!?! Shut the front door!

 you people are ridiculous....

Should this turn out to be the case with the new iPhone(s), why does it really matter? I had a phone with a protruding lens previously (I didn't particularly like it but it wasn't necessarily bad) but once it was in a case, it was a non-issue. How many people constantly use their iPhones without cases? Further, how many will be pushing on them on flat surfaces, causing them to wobble?

Personally, I'd rather have a thinner and lighter phone (because it will go in a case that adds weight and bulk) and have a slight protruding lens rather than having a thicker and heavier phone.

Interesting that 0.67mm is looking like how much thinner the iPhone 6 is than the iPhone 5/5S... No-one ever complained about the 5 being too thick... They complained about battery life. Let's fix what's not broke and **** the rest! :)

Yup - because we know all there is to know about how the iPhone 6's battery will perform

Are you guys for real? Seriously....do you actually think about this stuff before you type it out?

mAh are about as useful for determining battery life as mp are for determining a camera's quality. Or GHz for determining how fast a processor is.

Just make it bloody thick enough to not have to have a protruding camera and we'll all enjoy the better battery life.

Seriously, are Apple this out of touch with what the majority of people want since Steve Jobs died? Does Jony Ive live in his own little bubble where "thinness" is the be-all and end-all of everything at the expense of performance and usability?

I guess Apple are getting desperate for a USP with the iPhone rapidly falling behind on spec sheets to competitors and being thinner than them is the only trump area left.

I have the current ipod touch which is think with camera like this, it is awesome. The battery is fine for my needs. iPhone battery is fine as well, but it feals like a fat clunky brick in comparison. Most normal people don't use their phone enough in a day for the battery to be an issue, you do realize that you are actually in the minority of who apple is selling to?
