A new aluminum casing isn't enough to make me "upgrade." Others will make their own decisions.

Most people only replace their computer every three to five years. Very few people who own a current model MBP would upgrade. There may be some Powerbook users thinking it's about time however.

I don't think Apple even intends when they design a new model computer that people with the previous model would upgrade.

Why would you gear a professional computer for coffee shop use? I'm a motion graphics designer and my DVD burner in my MBP has saved the day countless times. Right now, I can grab my MBP and show up to work onsite anywhere without a bag-full of gadgets and add-ons. I'm doing that right now and only bring headphones, my eSATA card and power adaptor.

Taking away full-sized DVI, optical drive, and Firewire 400 would SUUUUUCK.

Every software installation I do is downloaded from the net. And I don't burn DVDs or CDs ever, nor do I imagine most people do. So why do most people need to carry a burner around every time they want take their computer somewhere? Just in case they need to burn a DVD at the coffee shop? Do you carry blank DVDs with you everywhere you go?

Do you need a DVD burner in your iPhone? Why does it need to be an integral part of your computer instead of something that you can plug in when (or if) you ever need it.

The implication is that the dock is in the trackpad... ie, the trackpad is not only glass, but an interactive touchscreen.

Sounds horrible to me. My fingers would always be tapping the dock by accident. I would say it is fake just 'cause Apple wouldn't make such a stupid design.

+1

of course they do. i would guess 30% of sales are strictly on upgrades.

good news but no FW400? FW 800/400 have different connections so how can it be backward compatible?

Because it's the same protocol. You just use an adaptor, which goes from 9-pin to 6 pin. The connected Fw400 thing will then only make use of the six pins.

In the PC world, most FW-plugs are 4-pin – the difference being that it's lacking the two power (as in current/volts) pins. It's still compatible with a 6 pin "apple" FW-plug. You just need an adaptor.

Think of it like adaptor plugs one uses to stick in the wall. They may look different, but if the voltage is right, you just need an adaptor.

Joking, right?

Dock display in the trackpad wouldn't work - not like that anyway. Using the current design of the dock there is far too little space to do it elegantly. Look at the supposed dock on the trackpad - there's, what, 6 or so items?

Looks good even though it's not real.

Im assuming that Apple will have some sort of customization as to whats in the trackpad. I like the overall design and I like the idea of the interactive glass trackpad but the dock there doesnt make sense.

Im hoping for the ability to change that to the calculator or something and to only show up when Dashboard is activated

I reckon fake too, might look similar but dont think that is it

If the put any less ports on the new MBP's, I'll be looking elsewhere when it's time to update my lappy. The current MBP's have a very bare minimum of ports as it is. What we need is a full sized expresscard/54 slot, a at least one more USB port, and maybe even a multi-card reader. C'mon Apple, don't remove even more of our connectivity.

Yeah, the cube wasn't a stupid design at all! And the apple newton looked BEAUTIFUL! Don't give me that bull, apple ****s up like everyone else

I've got FireWire 400 devices, how would I connect them to FireWire 800 if it is backwards compatible? Is there some sort of adapter I could get?

Yeah, the dock that is on the track pad is not at the right angle. It looks like you're looking straight at the dock on the screen as if someone, I don't know, took a screen shot of their dock.

I'm assuming that amongst the array of hardware you say you have there is a scroll key?

Yeah.. soo true...
2008 and we have a COMBO DRIVE in the base models.
Might be to you but for me that is NOT top of the line technology rofl.

People are so... rofl

But I thought optical drives were unnecessary? :D

I think if anythings stripped down its the macbook, i mean since the macbook pro is by its own admission a professionals machine it doesnt make sense for them to lose too much from it since it has to be able to handle pretty much everything you can throw at it

actually peeps they mean it's carbon footprint. just getting rid of heavy metals and other such "hurtful" things to the environment.... (i think, maybe not)

But since when did carbon atoms grow feet? Or is that when you make an outline of your foot on a piece of paper, with a pencil, like in art class when you were 5? And since when did Iron Maiden hurt the environment?

So many questions, so little time.

You just need new cables. 9 pin on one end and 6 pin on the other end.
