How does that logic work? Blu-Ray doesn't require HDMI, they just want HDCP (which can be disabled in software or hardware) and HDCP works over DVI and DisplayPort.
I do believe that Apple may be waiting until there are drives that will read Blu-Ray and burn CDs & DVDs, so they dont' have to have multiple drives in a system, although I do expect the ability to BTO Blu-Ray in the next update or the spring update, at least in the MacPro, since it has two bays.
I'm actually getting excited for new systems because of the possibilities, plus my 6 year old PowerBook is really showing its age.
TEG
It's a terrible idea. Everyone on here is so hung up on Apple ditching the optical drives and ports on the new notebooks - that isn't going to happen. They might reduce them, as the article states, but for serious use, a MBP without an optical drive and ports is entirely useless to me, and I'd rather not carry around a 'brick'. I want everything in one nice, shiny case.
As long as they provide some sort of improved GPU, we can easily say that the new MBs are gonna be the REDEMPTION for those that have waited all along for a PB 12" replacement. And another reason to blow my bank account once more because of Apple products (my dear iBook G3 needs a rest)...
With this new generation of notebooks, Apple is gonna MOP THE FLOOR with the ridiculous offerings by Dell, HP and Sony, either because of superior design, superior OS or both.
There is NO COMPETITION for the most successful digital media and personal IT company in the world.
GO APPLE!
The article mentioned a cross or hybrid between an MBA and MB for the new design. That, matched with more competitive pricing would bring more folks in I believe.
If you go to a best buy and look at not just the number, but diversity of brands and spec offerings in the realm of laptops and the fact that 90% of them are less than $900, then bounce over to the next aisle where the Macs are at, there is nothing that is sub-$1,000.
Make that $1,000 macbook tops tops tops, but don't start the consumer out at $1,000, start the macbooks at $699. That would be a terribly easy decision to make.
Aluminum is not just for style. It works well as a heat sink. A good way to reduce fan noise is to use the case itself as a sink. So aluminum means less noise. It also does not need paint nor a conductive coating on the inside to shield EMI. So it can men less manufacturing steps and low cost.
If that bit about DVI and FireWire is true, then a lot of people are going to be pissed!
Myself included! I'm a video editor and I feel that proprietary ports will mess with my workflow!
If you buy an Apple, you will not have an obsolete computer for atleast the next 2 years...Apple generally start with top of the line proven technology as base models.
Damn it! Keep the frickin FireWire 400. I don't want to have to buy different cables!
If Apple sells macbooks at $700, they will end up losing money. I used to think that Apple was over priced....until I started comparing dells & HPs with same configuration as Apple (so to speak Apples to apples comparison& the cheapo dells & HPs were priced similar to Apple but still comes with not so interesting Vista

Fanboy to the core huh?
Sorry to say but apart from looks there's ********s better laptops in the market for far less price.
It's just none of them has the Apple loge so people like you can't see them.
And it is 100% recyclable which is in line with their ongoing Green push.
+1
So this means nearly all pro-audio firewire soundcards won't plug straight in without buying new wires, and also when I get the new 17" (which I fully intend to do) I can't run a FW800 HDD out 1, and the FW400 to the soundcard, and now need to daisychain everything. W@nk3rs!
This "let's make it small at the expense of everything else" fad withis starting to p*** me off! It's supposed to be a macbook PRO, not macbook less ports.
I'd actually like it slightly BIGGER as I want something approaching a desktop power that's super-portable so I can take more music/photos/software everywhere and use it on stage live. I want to replace my desktop, not constantly have to copy 100s of gigs worth of stuff back and forth? Kinda like that new thicker Dell Fuglybook, but done with some Apple panache and OSX. That has 2x 200GB drives in so you can RAID them, or just have 400GB of storage. If they did something like that with the latest drives you could have 640GB in it, which is more sensible considering the size of my music collection and all my samples and soft synths.
Maybe the "Brick" is a similar big fat laptop that goes at the top of the line and is all about performance, not whether you can slip it down the front of your trousers easier than the last range of macbooks.
Maybe give it a 19" display too and make a proper beast that you can edit video on, with the 2x 320GB 7200rpm drives, blu-ray, etc. and make a laptop to finally replace desktops. It might weigh a bit more but it's more the kinda thing you can stick in the boot of your car, or whip out it's bag and power on from it's adapter, rather like a non-top heavy iMac with attached keyboard and touchpad concept.
Sure, I am getting one of these...do they run OS X? Do they have the same genius design as Apple's? Do they profit from top support and reliability? If yes to all of the above, sign me up...thank you.![]()
Yeah.. soo true...
2008 and we have a COMBO DRIVE in the base models.
Might be to you but for me that is NOT top of the line technology rofl.
People are so... rofl
Sure, I'd love one... but the price is vastly higher than that of a MacBook. I'd gladly take a regular MacBook with the Optical drive yanked out of it and the case reduced just by that much.
