I would say that its a fake...why would they even think about using the word "Power"? They quit calling them powerbooks and powermacs for a reason...

I hear you, unfortunately like it or not they appear to represent a good chunk of the market these days...

Tell me about it, they are the market, and Apple knows it and has been marketing to them for a while sans the high end MBP and Mac Pro.

I keep thinking about the iPhone, and how many people bought that even though it couldn't even make voice calls all that well. It was "Cool" looking and fancy.

Steve doesn't care... he just wants it to look pretty

I think they should use aluminum. But not the way they did in this image. I want the cool redesign Apple Insider was describing... with some elements of stainless steel :p

I agree - I am confident we will see a distinct design change for the MacBooks and MacBook Pros - just not what has been posted in this story. ;)

The Macbook is quite focused on the education market, where users often carry their Macs around a lot in rucksacks and they're quite bashed. This is not so true of the MBP.

OK.. MacRumors' credibility just went through the floor.

We appreciate what you do.. but this'll make me think twice about believing stuff on the site.. and a front page story too! Shameful.

Err you do realise that is not actually the same design or picture , this website is MacRumors and there was a lot more on this website than just a picture of the MBP. And if you read the article no where does it state that it is real, and even suggests that they might just be mockups but the additional information adds some credibility to the website in question.

Yep, you hit the nail on the head. Ah well, business is business, and many times the best decisions are not the ones that are ultimately made (either by the company, by the consumer or both!)

I want to believe it, but Leopard has been out too long for these pictures to be real. I call bluff, based on the screen backgrounds. Other than that, they could be real. But the Apple designers have been using Leopard backgrounds for more than 6 months now. EXTREMELY unlikely these are real on that basis.

Whoever photoshopped these made one critical mistake or I might have believed him.

If these designs prove correct, I'm disappointed with the black surround on the MBP - very 70's (and not in a good way... but then again, is there a good way to refer to 70's design? hmmm...) from what I can see in these small pictures.

That said, I think it's a fake, for what it's worth.

Another nail in the coffin for this rumor: The MacBook Pro has the shiny black bezel, which means by default, the screen will be glossy: A lot of MPB users favor the matte screen...

Why are you sure it will be Al? That would be a real break from one of the core concepts of the iBook/MacBook, which have the plastic case for durability in rough environments like education.

That is marketing spiel. They have plastic cases because they liked how plastic cases look and they designed plastic cases. Then a marketing guy came up with a 'functional' reason they have plastic cases - "Durable for your crotch-fruit at school!"

It isn't the other way around at Apple.

With the aluminum (aluminIum for my wife and other Brit friends) case, the marketing people will come up with something like "It is aluminum for light weight and rugged durability, for your crotch-fruit at school!"

Man, you people.

Dunno if they're real or not, but people working in making promotional materials swap out desktop backgrounds in and out all the time.

And if someone was making as polished a fake as this one don't you think they'd be be smart enough to drop in a Leopard background?

They look realish to me (the MB and MBP look exactly like what I'd expect the next rev to look like), and the apple.com address that MR notes is at the very least intriguing... but it's hard to know for sure just how in the loop this person at Apple is. We'll find out soon whether Apple shuts down the site ASAP.

What I find most interesting is iTunes 8. iTunes hasn't received a major update for a long, long time - I'd love to see what Apple has been chewing on, and especially if they've been able to come up with a clever way to simplify and unify iTunes' rapidly increasing number of functions (some of which it frankly doesn't handle all that well - like organizing and playing videos) and overall kitchen-sink quality.

A new version of iTunes to go along with the new App Store would be perfect timing.
