Am I crazy for wanting to return my X for a Plus?

One word: TruTone. Try holding up your X with TruTone on next to an 8 Plus. And then try navigating the same menu on both phones. You won't want to go back, trust me.

None of which is a problem with the phone per se, just you as a picky user wanting to save money, yet you rock a 7+ so counter your argument right there.

My 7+ is paid off and I bought the X with cash. Saving money wasn’t the primary reason I returned the X. There was, however, a laundry list of reasons of why the X is a downgrade for me. Trust me, I will gladly plunk down coin for a superior product.

I would like to give an honest opinion. Just like everybody else, I was very excited about the X. I got up at 2:15 in the morning to pre-order the phone for myself. It was very interesting how Apple made sure that none of the phones are on display so no one really knew what it would feel like in their hand and kept telling us how big the screen was. When I first got the phone it was one of those things where I really was trying to fall in love with it. It felt small right away. I noticed the screen was very very narrow and the plus definitely seem like you’ll be able to fit more on it. I decided to go to Best Buy to return the phone and get a plus and everybody there was calling me crazy and making me feel bad. Let’s be realistic, is it always easy to go from watching a 46 inch screen in your bedroom To then going to a 32 inch? I always gravitate towards the bigger phone I think the X plus would be a perfect balance of the big screen with the new swipe gestures which I seem to really love in the multitasking. All in all I got the 8+ which is only a month old so I can’t understand why everybody makes it sound like the X is so much better. I love the 8+ and would never go back to regular X. I came from a Galaxy s8 plus which is a fantastic phone.. Best screen possible.. The 8 plus is def a good transition coming from a galaxy 6.2 inch screen as opposed to a narrow 5.8 inch screen. It is all what you enjoy. I personally felt that watching videos on the x in the youtube app was the final straw in returning the phone. Watch a video on the 8 plus then the x in the youtube app and look at the difference. I hope everyone appreciates my non biased opinion.

I have my 7 Plus sitting on my entry hall table waiting for the box from Apple to send it in and every time I pass it, I think ... it looks so old fashioned with the home button and it's so large and "bulky". The X is sleek and modern. I love this phone!
 
I struggled with this over the weekend...I already own the 8 Plus and its display does seem a little more spacious.

Looking at it today I feel that my concerns were mostly part of becoming accustomed to the new phone. The X is a minor technological miracle and almost certainly the best phone available. It even pretty much justifies it's pricing.

So the 8 Plus will go on Craigslist. My wife doesn't want it after using my X.
 
There seems to be quite a few flaws with the X that are making me hesitant to buying it.

1. All anyone has to do to get into it is hold it a meter from your face. If you misplace it and someone nearby takes it, it wouldn't be as difficult for them to now get into it.

2. The high cost of repair if something goes wrong

3. A mixture of both above. It used to be people would steal your phone to sell on. Now with Apple charging $550+ to replace the screen, why go to the hassle of stealing your phone and selling it when you can steal the phone and sell the screen to anyone looking to replace their broken one?

4. Shooting 30,000 particles at your face dozens of times a day, 365 days a year cannot be safe. It doesn't matter what Apple says. People are willing to trade damage their skin/eyes (doesn't matter how little the damage) just to have the latest phone.

5. Have to spend atleast another $70 just to be able to use fast charging

I was all sucked into the hype when preorders started and soon as my delivery date was Nov, I was annoyed. But as the launch date passed, it's given me time to think and the hype has died down. I've cancelled my preorder because I could just walk into an Apple store and get one soon.

But I'm having second thoughts of whether I should just get the 8+ instead of the X.

I work in a UK phone shop and when I saw the X in the flesh for the first time on launch day, it made me love my 8+ all the more. I completely accept that the new design is here to stay but I’m more than happy to wait for a bigger version.

As an aside, a fair number of the customers that came in to have a play with the X were a bit underwhelmed, from what I could tell. Disregarding price because enough has been said about that, there were a lot of comments about how small it was (to be fair, Apple never suggested it’d be Plus-scale, it was always going to be closer to the “regular” 6/7/8 in terms of size), people getting out their 7+ etc and holding it next to the X and basically not seeing all that much of a tangible difference between OLED and LCD, and struggling to get to grips with the new gestures - to be fair, that last one was bound to happen to begin with, and I’m sure people will get the hang of it quite quickly. Maybe not the older customers who from experience tend to often have an iPhone because it’s got a home button, and their iPad has a home button, and it basically works the same, right? Which brings me onto my main concerns about the way Apple seem to be heading in general.

It does seem to me that Apple are moving away from the simplicity and the “it just works” stuff that so clearly differentiated it from Android in the first place. Things that used to be easy to find are buried away in the now almost nonsensical Settings and the X has these silly little counter-intuitive things, like the extra step to close an app (holding down until the delete button appears before you can swipe an app away is an extra step, I don’t care what people say, and it doesn’t matter whether or not you should actually be closing apps down; the fact is that if you want to do it, it’s now more of a pain in the arse than it used to be) or the way you have to swipe down to access the control centre - which you have to do if you want to see your battery percentage. Again, I’ve personally rarely used that feature, but for the people that do it’s an inconvenience. A minor inconvenience, yeah, but inconveniences are... un-Appley. I know we’ve had various hardware-gates in the past, but this is different, and I’m not sure I completely like it.

It's just a light source, not a particle cannon.

Walking to your car probably exposes you to more energy than the X could ever produce in your lifetime.

You’re not crazy for wanting to return it. You ARE however, inconsiderate to have rush ordered or dashed to a store queuing for hours to get your hands on one early only to return it days later. Both to yourself and to others.

Just like a marriage. Don’t rush into choosing your new device. I’m sorry it wasn’t for you.

All I can say is wow.
 
I’m gonna chime in since I’m on my 4th day with the X

I like it, it’s new, it’s got new stuff to mess around with, it’s got a nice screen that’s fairly easy on the eyes, and it’s a much smaller device than what I’m used to which has its pros and cons.

The speakers are loud and clear for YouTube and watching videos or movies, etc. And talking on the phone (Yes I talk) is so much better than my 7plus, people sound loud and clear and can hear me very clearly.

Ok the screen, dam the screen debate.
Well after a few days I gotta say, and I’m just being honest, this phone is not as bright as my 7plus. There I said it, this new oled screen is just not as bright as the older LCD screen. The colors are fairly nice and hey it’s oled, so yes it’s nice. But what can I say, Apple really nailed the whole LCD screen thing and I am just speculating here, but an 8plus may be even a little better than a 7plus, I’m not 100% certain on that, and don’t have one to put against my X, but I can see what people who have taken the time to really dig into this are saying. To me whites feel more white on my 7plus, True Tone turned off, and the screen being brighter with some beautiful color pop on that pretty LCD screen of the plus is just plain good.

Can Apple do a software update to make the screen brighter on the X? I don’t know, maybe. Can there be some tweaks done in other areas, sure I would imagine so. But what so many fail to realize is this, Apple has been perfecting their LCD screens for a while now, so they have it down to a science. This is their first dance with oled, and I think Apple may have just been to forceful with Samsung and maybe should have not tried to make this screen look so much as an LCD vs just letting the oled goodness really get used here. Listen the screen is good, it’s really good, but it does have a few short comings when compared with a plus screen, not talking size here, talking the actual screen and how it looks to the human eye.

Is it enough to push me towards getting an 8plus, jeez I don’t know if I would really want to go back to the home button, I like the whole Face ID thing, it’s easy and honestly just works for me. However like I said in a previous post, I do miss some the pros that a plus phone offers, and the battery is one of them. Will Apple push an update out that makes the X battery better? I would think so, as a matter in fact there is probably a software update coming for more than a few things, but is it enough for a former plus user...I will wait out the next week and half and just enjoy my phone and go from there.
 
Go into a store that sells both and play around with them. See which one you like better, and buy it. It's your money.
 
Returned mine today. Back to my 7 Plus and loving it even more. It was the first Apple product I ever returned. Funny that when I was at the store there were two other people returning their iPhone X. I could not hear why but in my case the phone felt too small coming from the Plus. If Apple releases a X Plus they will get my money.
 
before i sold my 7+ i was holding the X and 7+ back and forth. I really miss the "larger" screen on the + however when looking at it, it immediately looked archaic and bulky. I just wish the X was just a hair wider.

I just pre ordered the x last night. This is why I waited. I have my 7+ and the screen is perfect and battery life. I am debating to cancel my order, I know the screen is smaller (go on safari on the x and the + and go landscape, you will see the difference). Battery life isn't as good as a +. I might give the x a shot for 2 weeks and return it if I can't adjust. People who have both, what do you think?

I'm about 80% sure I'm gonna return my X... Possibly get a 7+ or 8+, but I may just stick with my 6S+

Gonna give it one more day, see if the battery holds up
 
Just feels like i'm on beta with the X. Apps need updated, apple seems uncertain about UI but needs to make some changes. Getting rid or making an option to hide that home indicator line would be a nice start. Give me an option to make the left horn the control center pull down. Get that battery % in there instead of an icon.

It's a well made phone though. Face ID is cool and works. The screen is awesome but i can see some people not noticing too much a difference since iphone screens are so good in general. Can't wait for the bigger version and more optimized iOS and apps. But I can wait for that while keeping my 7 Plus and get the better experience for now.

I'm upgrading from a 7+, and today was my first day with the X. I generally use my phone in portrait, so the size is not really a deal breaker for me. Apps feel narrower, but longer, just like the screen. The ease of using the device with one hand is so much better, which I'm really liking. And it just feels sturdier.

Went from a 6S Plus to the X and I feel like it's a step down.

I love Face ID, but everything else seems like a downgrade.

The screen looks great, but it does turn blue. It's 5.8 inches, yet feels a lot smaller.

Battery should be only slightly less than a Plus, yet it feels more like a 6,7,8. I would never worry if my phone was going to make it through the day with my Plus. Now it feels like I am afraid to use my phone cause I can watch the battery draining while I'm texting for 5 minutes. I'm currently on 60% with only 3 hours 30 minutes use

i looked at the iPhone X at the store and the first thing that popped in my head was „nope this is way too small“ and felt like an downgrade holding my 7 Plus next to it. bear in mind that the main reason i got my 7 Plus in the first place was to watch tv shows on my daily commute..

also updating from a 7 Plus makes no sense to me anyway. i would just end up using the same ol iOS using the same old apps as 5 mins before

ew TrueTone is the first thing i turned off on my iPad Pro. makes everything way too orange, i already got night shift for that
