So as an example, are you willing to buy the same apps for two different devices...? That would be a real waste of money.

Family oriented??? Hah! Put an iPad and a Fire at home, and watch the children fight to use the iPad.

The Fire is like a bronze medal, which is given to the second looser in a contest.

Again - you missed the point entirely. But it's ok. You're not alone...

Oh dear. This week we have seen Samsung try and sell the idea that a stylus is a selling point and now here we are to believe that buying three inferior products for less than the price of an iPad is something to shout about. I can buy 3 skateboards for less than the price of a car. That skateboard MUST be the best way to travel. Redonkulous!

It's a great ad, and also illustrates why Amazon is doing so well. Great products, and not over-priced like Apple.

Amazon "doing so well"?

Their latest financial results don't meet my definition of "doing so well":

Amazon.com Inc warned of a possible operating loss in the first quarter following a sharp drop in fourth-quarter profit,

Amazon's tepid results weren't all attributable to the Fire (its also spending heavily on warehouses, fulfillment centers, and content acquisition) - but it certainly doesn't help.

There is (at least) one glaring problem with the Fire's business model (ie. sell a tablet cheaply, at or below cost, hoping to make it up on digital content sales): Sales of digital content aren't very profitable. If Apple sells its movies, TV shows, music, and books basically at a "break-even" price in order to drive sales of its (profitable) tablets, phones, and music players, how is Amazon supposed to ever make huge profits doing the same thing?

I'll skim through the five pages of comments after I just say that my iPad and my nook Touch make such a great and perfect combination and they were completely worth the money. I'm sure a Kindle Touch would be just as fine if they didn't charge an extra $30 to not have advertisements.

And if I ever subscribe to Amazon Prime and I can see that their streaming video service is worthwhile enough to have alongside Netflix (which I can access on plenty more devices), then I'm sure I would enjoy having a Kindle Fire as well. I can pretty well imagine that I'll have one in the next year or two, actually. It's just that it only seems to be useful for accessing their video streams.

Ok - for people like you who think this way. Try this one on.

I have a choice. Either buying a Kindle fire and being able to surf, watch movies, read books, etc and it's $199 or I don't get anything because I can't afford or want to spend $499+ for an iPad.

This whole skateboard/car comparison is stupid because for plenty of people and families it might not be an either/or it might be something or nothing.

 Ummm, have you looked at the name of the website you are posting it on? Macrumors.com. There may be some bias here.

also have you seen the quality, ease-of-use, fluidity, speed, eco-system, content, sleekness, support and reliability of Apple products? Oh..

+1
Let's not be snobs about this. No, the Fire isn't an IPad replacement or an IPad killer but it's a nice little tablet that people can afford and that will work for their needs.

Good post. There are a few snobs here who whenever ANYONE says ANYTHING negative about anything Apple makes, they defend it as if you just insulted their mother. "You're suggesting there might be a good reason to buy something other than Apple!?!?! How DARE you!!!"

Yeah, and I could buy like 3 Kia Rios for the price of a single Range Rover. That totally makes the Kia Rio a superior car, right you guys?

If you have three people driving to three different places at the same time then 3 Rios is superior to one Range Rover. Never mind fuel economy, etc. But the Range Rover can do more, there's no denying that.

First post, We have both the iPad (wife's) and Kindle Fire and I keep reaching for the iPad when I get frustrated with the KF. Then my wife tells me I should of bought an iPad.

Right. However what people are advocating is that just because something is cheaper, it doesn't necessarily match the quality of the more expensive product.

I didn't miss the point; it is the same as always:

- Some people drive KIAs, others drive Lexus.
- Some buy a car to go from Point-A to Point-B, others to enjoy going from Point-A to Point-B.

To each its own, but comparing the Kindle to an iPad is like comparing a burger from Burger King to a burger made by a professional chef.

Wait, I could carry a mp3 player, digital camera, and phone with me through airport security or I could just get an iPhone. :D

Don't worry. You are not alone. I supposedly missed the point too.

This will only mean something to people who were not going to buy an iPad anyway. In fact, I would argue that they are benefitting more from the fact that they are insinuating that any of the Kindle's are a comparable product to the iPad than they are from the price portion of the discussion alone. A good tactic and they will probably sell a lot of these. The real losers here are the companies still relying on laptops and netbooks for the majority of their bottom line.

A lot of people seem to miss the point of the ad. Its aimed at families. Why have everyone fight over one iPad, when everyone can get a device they can use for the cost of one iPad?

If I buy an iPad as the father then that iPad is mine and allocated time on it would be strictly based on how good of a mood im in. Good tool for rewarding good behavior too. :D

Brought to you by the same advertising agency responsible for the commercial "Three Ford Festivas for the price of a BMW".

Theres always going to be those shopping for a bargain without regard for quality, good thing it's not Apples target audience. Amazon can have them.

Rob

I like traveling light. I could not imagine having to go through the TSA checkpoint with a laptop plus 3 Kindles. I will stay with the iPad ( wait - I don't have one yet for personal use). Will be getting my first iPad for personal use with iPad 3. Sorry Android - but I prefer the stable and more elegant solution. :D

But you are not travelling with kids. You are confusing family based here. You would not need to share your iPad wiht your kids but you can let them play with the Fire and for what the kids want to do the iPad is massive over kill. The fire will play movies and play simple games they would like.

So because a company does not try to make obscene amount of profit margins like Apple and instead going for a smaller profit margin they are stupid?

Amazon is using the kindle to push its digital services which for Amazon it makes fair amount of profit on and is continuing to grow it.

To all the people who complain about Amazon & Samsung taking shots at Apple in commercials: What do you think Apple has been doing the PC in the I'm a Mac commercials? Don't be so fast to brown nose up to Apple.
