Bought my son a Kindle Touch for Christmas. Its awful for anything other then bright light reading. The touch controls are horrible and Its looks like I'm reading an 80's calculator screen with black and gray

But its better for reading right? I mean better then being able to change the background colors, fonts, color highlighting and a lit screen to read in bed without a light.

Yes, a normal book is better for reading than a LCD screen. The e-ink display is superior for reading because it pretty much is like a standard paper book, it just requires the same lighting conditions.

never have I considered buying outside the ecosystem, but after seeing my nieces kindle and starting to enjoy reading on my iPad, the size and weight factor of the Kindle is surprisingly attractive. give amazon credit where due-effective advertising produces results...

Not sure what quantifies "better", but for people who are prone to eyestrain, it certainly is the right option.

actually it is, eInk or black and white for that matter is a lot easier on the eyes. my iPad is amazing but i cant read whole books on that thing, it makes my eyes tired. just as it is easier to read a book than some magazines with billion different colors

Pretty good ad IMO. It's not shooting the iPad down or misleading people, its just pointing out facts. I for one had no idea how much the Kindle Fire costs (although thats mainly down to it not being out in the UK yet).

Its an ad designed to make people think "huh....whats the kindle file like then?" and research it. It's certainly not an ad designed to do what Apple's do: "OMG so shiny...must...buy...now!".

It's a great ad, and also illustrates why Amazon is doing so well. Great products, and not over-priced like Apple. And amazingly enough, you don't have to wait in line like a fool to buy one. Good job, Amazon.

I guess all those other non-Apple tablets are overpriced as well that are charging the same as Apple. By the way, I have never waited in line, I just ordered what I want on-line.

No, the fact that Range Rovers are bad trucks with poor reliability makes the Kia Rio a better car.

You could have picked a better comparison, like a Honda Ridgeline or Toyota Sequoia.

two vespas and a bike for the price of a camry.

I loved my iPad. I sold it only because I carry an iPhone everywhere I go now and I didn't feel the need for two devices.

I also own a Kindle. I use it to read. I love it for that purpose.

This ad is like a hardware store saying "You could buy 3 hammers for the price of one saw." Well, sure... but that means nothing. If you want to fasten nails, you buy a hammer. If you want to cut wood, you buy a saw. Most people don't choose one over the other, if they need both, they'll darn well buy both.

Or maybe a better comparison might be "you could buy a screwdriver and a saw for less than the cost of your Swiss Army Knife". Again, technically true, but each has its own purposes and most people probably wouldn't choose one to the exclusion of the other.

TWO Kindles then? One for reading and the other for watching movies? No thanks. I will be able to do both on the iPad.

Anyone with half a brain can see the ad was implying that you can equip a family with Tablets/eBook Readers for less than the cost of one iPad. I'm sorry, but pulling out the 'I don't need three Kindles' argument is stooping rather low.

Nobody is forcing you to buy a Kindle, okay. I have no need for a tablet at all, doesn't mean I go poo-pooing every Tablet advert out there, picking out holes such as 'I like to travel light, I don't need a Tablet.' If you have no desire to get a Kindle, then that is fine. I'm sure no-one will care.

eInk is ideal for reading, which is all the Kindle Touch is for. It's not for web browsing (Even though you can do that) and not for fancy games. Thats the whole point of eInk, and thats why its so cheap.

It'd be like me buying an iPad and saying "The screen is awful for reading books" - thats because the iPad uses an LCD screen, which isn't designed for reading books.

This is a smart catchy commercial for Amazon that will get the average consumer to think twice before buying an iPad and at least consider the Kindle line of readers and tablets.

If you are looking to enable your entire family with e-Readers (and you are not aware that the Fire will let your kids buy whatever they want on your account with no protections) then you might pickup several Kindles for the whole family (like this commercial shows).

If I had the desire for managing two tablet-like devices I might buy the $79 Kindle for e-Reading since it is easier on the eyes for reading. However, I know that 99% of the time I would forget to bring the Kindle with me when I needed it. I remember the iPad because it does so much more than just reading.

There are already patents filed on screens that can do double-duty as color displays and e-ink displays as well as rumors of a tablet whose backside is e-ink and front side is a backlit color display. I'm hoping Apple brings these to the iPad soon to make it the best tablet AND e-reader on the market.

There's pros and cons on both sides and which one is "better" depends on the individual's situation. I personally own both an iPad and a Kindle Fire. Yes, I think the iPad gives a better overall experience, but I much prefer to take my Kindle Fire along when I travel. First, the smaller size makes it easier to carry around and second, I wouldn't feel as bad if I broke or lost a $200 device compared to a $500 device.

+1

I also own both devices. I love my IPad and am eagerly awaiting the new IPad 3 BUT I can't carry either in my purse. The Kindle Fire is a much simpler device but gives me the ability to read my email, the web and watch videos more comfortably than my IPhone when I'm away from home. Also, I LOVE reading books on the Fire and believe this is the one thing the Kindle does better than the IPad. The Fire is more comfortable to hold in my hand.

I think many of us forget most people simply can't afford the IPad. A half dozen coworkers and friends have bought the Kindle Fire, though, because it's affordable and gives them a decent Internet experience. Let's not be snobs about this. No, the Fire isn't an IPad replacement or an IPad killer but it's a nice little tablet that people can afford and that will work for their needs.

As a car nut, you picked a bad example. I'll easily take the 3 Kias for the price of the car that is known to have lots of reliability issues. My mom had a Land Rover, piece of crap. New and constantly had to be at the dealer for service.

Try picking an actual good car for the money, not an overpriced POS. Like a Mercedes or even a Toyota LandCruiser.

Umm, two points: Land Rover =/= Range Rover. Same company yes. Very different build qualities/price brackets/markets!

And so you had a bad experience with a Land Rover, doesn't mean they are crap. The Land Rover Defender has pretty much remained unchanged since first released in 1948 and used ALL over the world, in some pretty hostile places. Why? Because it's so damn good at what it does - reliably go off-road in unforgiving places, with the simplicity to keep it maintained and running for years!

Agreed, a LandCruiser is great - Top Gear UK tortured one and it wouldn't die! But a Mercedes 4x4 (bar the G-class) is massively overpriced and hopeless at anything other than the school run!

To be honest..

Most people just need a portable tablet to surf the web, and Kindle does that. I love my mac products, but to the average consumer, it's a complete waste of money.

well not everyone needs 384034850480 features, thats the point of the ad ... FAMILIE focused. i dont see why they cant co-exist. the "apple products are the best" thinking is so strange and i love my apple products but i also understand those who dont need all these features or just dont want to spent so much money, doesnt make them stupid or a bad product

So as an example, are you willing to buy the same apps for two different devices...? That would be a real waste of money.

Family oriented??? Hah! Put an iPad and a Fire at home, and watch the children fight to use the iPad.

The Fire is like a bronze medal, which is given to the second looser in a contest.

The only drawback I have seen is the page-turning effect is slow and ugly on the devices. Other than that, its a superior reading experience unless you are camping and don't have an exterior source of light.
