Yeah, I slapped a DVR-108 in mine no problem. There is only one issue to watch for...if Apple used a Pioneer Drive, you'll have a certain set of screws with built in standoffs. If they used a Sony, you'll have a different set of screws.

In my case I had a Sony and put a Pioneer in so I just had to leave the screws off of the front of the drive...no big deal.
alright thats cool. Now i have nothing to worry about. :p
unless of course it voids the warrenty? (does it?)

Do you guys have an idea about how this will effect the price of the single and dual 1.8?

Typically discontinued models get cheaper, to flush them out of the supply chain as quickly as possible. They might only be sold in the "refurbished" section, even while new. Or at stores they'd typically be bundled with some extras or discounts.

They tend to be sold in the Sale section rather than in the refurbished section.

can't believe you guys are still on about Hz... i'd be a lot more disappointed if it didn't have PCIe and ddr2!

Apple just started a new policy of no longer breaking down computer sales by model, eMac, iMac, Power Book, iBook, etc.
They will now lump Power Mac sales in with Mac Mini's & others to hide how badly there selling. Apple sold only 167,000 Power Mac's last quarter and these numbers will continue to fall & Apple knows that. Its why you aren't seeing Apple include goodies like 1GB ram standard, a 256K graphics card, big discounts on LCD monitors purchased with a Power Mac, or including a 3 year Apple Care Plan with any Power Mac purchase. They could have just dropped Power Mac prices. I think Apple doesn't care if you buy one or not. They will sell tons of Mac Mini's & iMac's, that's their real market. If Apple now views Power Mac users as a niche market, they may have reasoned its not cost effective to spend time & money designing cutting edge Power Macs for a declining market and concentrate on big volume products. I bet we will see a G5 Mac Mini before we see a dual core Power Mac.

*still not declaring anything on the PM rumors until they actually are offically releassed..but

Why would apple spend all this time and money developing brand new, high end, optimazed mac only video and audio software just to drop the only machines that really use them properly. A HIGH end workstation from apple would make sense, becuase there is a demand, and there also seems to be a demand for macheads that won't blow that kind of money but still want a 'high end' machine they can tinker with more so than an imac or mini. If there is no announcment at the keynote at wwdc i'll buy asap, but its a month.. i can wait

Prices

Who ever said the prices were not changing? They put the 2.7 at $3000! That means the 2.3 must be at $2500 and the 2.0 at $2000! That is a $500 price drop.

To be honest, I would perfer a bigger drop but I think I am ok with that. I am buying one real soon and that extra $500 could mean another gig of ram!

What does everyone think of the Inspiron XPS Gen 2? Pretty close to getting one of those instead of my previously planned "Power"Book. -JB

I have a Dell laptop now, but I am about to purchase a new Mac (to keep this on topic... :)) I believe the XPS is a good machine except for the fact that it ways a ton... about 9 pounds by itself... without the bad and the power brick. :(

In ONE DAY, this thread gets 17+ pages!

A Dual 2.7 Ghz PM for $2999???

I bet that the price range is this:

Single 1.6 PM: $1,399
Single 1.8 PM: $1,499
Dual 1.8 PM: $1,699
Dual 2.0 PM: $1,899
Dual 2.4 PM: $2,100
Dual 2.7 PM: $2,499
Dual 3.0 PM: $2,899
Dual Core 2.2: $3,199

So, that would make the Dual 2.4 PM the best deal, but everyone will want the worst deal, the Dual 3.0 - some will want the dual core which is reasonably priced considering how expensive the Dual core processors are but is still a rip off.

C'mon, these numbers are great!

And, Mac mini G5:

Each model gets a 64 MB Graphics Card

1.20: $499 - 256 MB RAM
1.40: $599 - 512 MB RAM
1.50: $699 - 512 MB RAM
1.67: $799 - Bigger size, 2 slots filled with 2 256 MB RAM slots, faster HD, and more USB 2.0/firewire and audio-in as well as out.

and while i'm at it i'll write other numbers:

eMac G5:

512 MB Ram, 64 MB Graphics

1.50: $899
1.60: $999
2.00: $1299

iMac G5:
17:
1.6 Single: $1,299
1.8 Single: $1,399
2.0 Single: $1,499
20:
1.8 Single: $1,799
1.8 Dual: $1,999
2.0 Dual: $2,199
2.2 Dual: $2,499

and of course, from another thread, a new PowerMac Mini I suggested (though someone else suggested the name)

80 GB HD, 256 MB RAM, G5 Processor from 1.6-2.0 GHz, 64 Graphics, OSX Tiger

Look, why not wait till tomorrow (or next week, or next month, or whenever the upgrade is announced) before complaining about the price and size of the upgrade?

This Amazon page was obviously a mistake - someone screwed up and loaded it onto the main site too early. It's possible (wishful thinking. I know) that the price it mentioned ($2994) may not be the correct value. I seem to recall (but have no proof) that after the last PowerBook upgrades Amazon didn't update the prices for some time and had same prices as the previous PB range.

Also, the leaked Amazon page didn't contain any technical details aside from the CPU and RAM specs, so complaining about what else is missing is just madness. Take a deep breath, count to ten, step away from your computers, turn on the TV and forget about it for one night.

good idea....will try that after going through all the rumor threads once again

I guess I shouldn't open up my refurbished 2.5 GHz Power Mac that showed up at my door today.

It depends on how much you paid for it as to whether or not it would be worth it to send it back. If you saved more than $500 from the baseline (new) system, then I would take that money and purchase extra RAM and a larger hard drive if so desired. It would be cheaper in the long run.

Whoa. I thought the G5s were faster than that. It would seem IBM + Apple have a lot of work to do!

And I'm worried because Intel has announced repeatedly that 65 nanometer is ahead of schedule. They could be out for the holidays in '05 and in bulk in Q1 '06.

Now Apple has $7 billion in cash. Isn't that enough to build 3 chip foundries?

EXACTLY!

Realistically, what is going to be the biggest bottleneck for future applications? The CPU speed (and not being dual core)? Or maybe the RAM and GPU speed? Considering Motion uses BOTH of those components quite heavily, my money is on the RAM and GPU.

AGP is already on its way OUT, which is a big problem if you're spending 3000+ dollars on a machine and want it to hold value.

Again, if Apple doesn't add faster RAM and PCI-e, this update will be pretty pointless, UNLESS they lower the price by a good percentage.

Yea, they will not exist most likely. That is what I have read today, anyway. I would suspect that the baseline Power Mac would be the dual 2.0 GHz system and the 1.8 GHz processor might be a future bump for the iMac G5 system.

look, people are saying that theres a big show for PM upgrade. thats not true, it's all gossip. The upgrade seems to be an enhancemente of the current line-up. They mabe are launching it the same day as Tiger so that it doesn't make much press, just adds out a bit to Tiger but not a big show off. Just like they do it on the PC side, regular minimal upgrades. Mabe they are leaving a big show off upgrade to the hardware line up for june... soo cool down people... We all wish apple kept way ahead of the curve 110% of the time but that wont happen, at least not always and worst on hardware where they depend on 3rd party manufacturers.

Okay I'm not going to knock the speed but seriously

HOW DARE THEY SHIP THE TOP OF THE LINE G5 WITH LESS THAN A GIG OF RAM? God.

thats true and a cheap marketing trick apple plays so you'll pay for a super-expensive RAM upgrade, i mean whats must be the total margin they get of this "great" tactic? if they could only sincere things up... anyway, you'll all be taking that CC anyway so stop whinning...

This update is hilarious, they did not even drop the price!! (on amazon anyway.) I could go for 2399 for the dual 2.7, but 2.999!! No thanks...

The thing is, if they drop the price, it throws existing owner's machine values into an instant drop, more so then just a few minor h/w upgrades to the new models.

It's not good to piss of current owners.

I think this fuss is 98% about bragging rights and egos, and 2% about people who actually have dire need for more speed than a dual-2.7 G5.
You hit the nail on the head IMHO. Guilty as charged

Dual Core

The procesers could very well be dual core. the amazon page didnt say anything about it, but would apple advertise it as a dual core dual proccers?

I wouldn't be very happy if i bought a machine that seemed out of line with a big price drop or technology boost right after i bought it BUT...no one makes you buy it, if you agree to buy it then thats your choice, its just how 'computer life' is...remember, it sucks just as bad for someone waiting to have to wait longer just for the sake of spreading out the updates.
