Tim promised back when he first announced this that it would be coming to *ALL* Apple TV's and I'm sure he's a man of his word.

I remember something about that, I hope he referred to ALL models including version 3, and not all models with app store, so the 2015 one and the new 4k. We're going to find it out soon

Surprised they indeed offered it before Christmas and though potentially selling less fire sticks for people not using the smart TV apps.

I noticed this gives the option of Amazon channels like HBO, Starz etc. It looks like if you subscribe through Amazon to HBO etc. It will show up in the app like the fire tv. I wonder if this was a compromise by Apple?

Cool, but I guess since Amazon is having a spat with Google they want to whore their services on another platform quickly. I am not sure why it too so long to get on Apple TV, other then politics, as porting an iPad app to Apple TV is trivial. Its great not to have to AirPlay the stream from my iPad because AirPlay is still not 100% rock solid and I always get hiccups that usually require me to reset Apple TV or iPad.

Well that's good news. It puts Apple TV for me as an option. For now I will stick with built in Roku.

Good news.
It means more use for my ATV, as I’ve been using my (slow and frustrating) TV app for Amazon.
It’s an important development for us in the UK, where the overall functions/flexibility of the ATV are far less than the US.

It means I can now use Apple TV for pretty much everything, with the only notable exceptions being BT Sport (which would be useless for me anyway if it was tied to having BT Internet service, like the iOS app is), and Channel 4. Between Amazon, NowTV, Netflix, BBC, ITV and Channel 5 (and iTunes), 99% of what I watch is now covered. Amazon was the big missing piece in the jigsaw.

My ATV4 is now finally complete! No more toying around with the idea of purchasing a FireTV Stick to get the Amazon Video app. Most importantly, no more AirPlay from my iPad to the ATV (not that AirPlay is bad, I just always preferred a native tvOS app).

Looking forward to downloading it tonight after work.

I think that's a typo, tvOS - which allows for app store/downloads - is for 4th gens and higher (2nd and 3rd gens the OS was referred to as Apple TV OS). Either that or there's plans for it being released to the 3rd gens (via a system update) and they jumped the gun a little :)

One would think Apple would screen for typos like that...and they surely know their own hardware well enough to know the 4th and 5th generations are the only capable of supporting the App Store. Maybe this was one of the stipulations Amazon had, since they were one of the only major streaming services left out of the Apple TV game on the 3rd generation. Perhaps that was also the hold-up on the release? I really just hope it wasn't a typo. :D

You would think, and that's a pretty clear error. I hope it's not either, seems less likely with that other post using very specific language about the 3rd gen. Since I have access to 3rd gen right here at the home office, I'll keep checking on it :)

Apparently, it is available. I'll try on my ATV 3 when I get home this evening.

"While the tvOS app is a separate component of the installation, Amazon Prime Video is said to be available on pre-app store third-generation Apple TVs as well as fourth-gen and 4K Apple TVs, according to the release notes. (We're waiting for clarification on generational support.)"
Just checked my 3rd gen. Nada. Even ran a manual update.

Wow does the UI suck. The Prime app has nothing but jitters and stutters. 4K HDR stuff looks a little off to me. Hmm...it needs an update and fast!! Why would Apple let Amazon out this unfinished app on the App Store. Wait a sec..as I’m writing this the app just crashed. Here we go!

About time!

I am stuck at work, but as soon as I get home, I will give it a try.

Not interested unless it supports the «TV» app in full.

Well, I would agree with you, except I live outside of US so TV app does not work anyway...

You are not missing much.

the TV app is pointless if you have a family. tvOS in general is not very family friendly.
