McDonald's, Burger King & Co. also sell millions of burgers every year, but nobody in his right mind would ever say that this is good and healthy food.

There are also still millions of alcoholics, drug addicts and smokers on the world. Following your line of logic, Marlboro & Co must be selling great products.

There is a difference between a good product and one that is good for your. Some manufacturers make fantastic scotch. It sells. It is good. No, it is not good for you -- who cares.... McDonald's makes great fast food. It is bad for you. It's still a good product.

The iPad and the Kindle are not competitors IMHO. Having used both, the Kindle is much better for reading because of the e-ink display, it is much easier on the eyes. The Kindle is only good for reading, all the other add on functionality is pure junk. The iPad is so much more than a reader that there is no point in even expounding on this point. Now, because e-ink is what makes the Kindle a much better reader and because e-ink will not allow a device to show Netflix movies, play video games, or have any sort of decent application besides reading, the iPad will probably never be a better reader. Besides, the iBook store is laughable. After a few months now, I've completely given up using it and just use the Kindle app. There isn't **** in the stupid store for selection. They could have prepared better, obviously it's not a priority. Given the pain I get in my eyes after reading on the iPad after several hours, I know why. I'm thinking about picking up another Kindle. I read a lot. Only count on reading on the iPad if you're like most people and are only going to read on occasion. If you are an avid reader, the iPad is not the right device for you for reading. Hours and hours reading on the iPad is fatiguing.

5 minutes later, she turns to him:

"Excuse me sir, how are you web browsing, playing games, and watching video on your e-reader?"

"Silly bitch, it's an iPad."

I could see why an ipad user would call her a that since they have never touched or even had a conversation with a woman.

Now why aren't Kindles outselling iPads? Oh yeah!

1/3 of high school graduates never read another book for the rest of their lives.

42 percent of college graduates never read another book after college.

80 percent of U.S. families did not buy or read a book last year.

70 percent of U.S. adults have not been in a bookstore in the last five years.

57 percent of new books are not read to completion.

BUT...

Each day in the U.S., people spend 4 hours watching TV, 3 hours listening to the radio and 14 minutes reading magazines.

i like it

I like Amazon for their positive stance to everything Apple. They're all right with this ad.

Missing it.

I'll start by saying that for the most part, I have been a lover of all things Apple since the Apple II. I have owned several variations of iMacs, Powerbooks and now a MacBook Pro. Not to mention being an iPhone family and loving our AppleTV.

All that said, the Kindle is a different beast than the iPad. If you're truly a reader, then it's an easy decision. At $139, it's practically (not quite) an impulse purchase. Both my father and wife love theirs. They go through several books a month. I love the beauty of the iPad. I'll probably end up buying one. But for long term reading, you can't beat e-ink. Really, the Kindle is a product for a different target market--avid readers.

The Kindle isn't an iPad competitor. The iPad isn't a Kindle killer. They are different machines that have a crossover in functionality.

I've not owned a Kindle so I can't speak from experience on that device, but don't all of us read for "hours and hours" on LCD displays every single day?

Maybe you should set aside time to have the full experience of actually reading the book...I can't believe people are really trying to justify Apple not getting dissed by pretending audiobooks are the same thing as reading.
Wow, way to jump to conclusions! A bit of (unwarranted) condescension there?

I make it through about 3 audible.com books a month.

I make it through about 10-15 ebooks a month, using my iPad almost exclusively as the reader. Actually, the primary reason I bought it was to serve as an ereader. It is the end of a long string of Palm and WinMo pda's that started in 2001.

back ot...

I would like to buy a Kindle3 to supplement my ipad, but without the Stanza app (for books from baen), the nook app (for books from B&N), and the ereader app (for books from ereader.com), it would have a significantly crippled library. I prefer to buy books from Amazon, but when they are unavailable, I freely use the other sources.

Except for the Apple ibooks library. That "page" simulation just gets on my nerves too much. No "night" reading mode is also a turnoff (inverting the background gives you a painful white strip across the top of the screen). Turning down the brightness just isn't as effective as switching to red on black viewing.

Desperation is so sad to watch. I am a fan of Amazon and a Prime member. In fact I buy most of my Apple products from Amazon before going to the Apple store. But really, this? They need to move on, like Adobe. I would never buy anything as ugly as the Kindle. Looks like a Etch A Sketch.

I could see why an ipad user would call her a that since they have never touched or even had a conversation with a woman.

Haha. The original comment was pretty over the top. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for a little harmless misogyny, but all that woman did was make some statements of fact about her Kindle. She didn't insult the man. Calling her a bitch in response is the mark of an insecure, sexually frustrated male. That lives in his mom's basement.

Pretty good ad by Amazon, it hits :apple: and all the other tablets that are starting to appear in their limited reading capabilities....

and i see more of them in NYC than iPad's. they are cheap, people like to read books and a lot don't care about the iPad's other features

Amazon isn't desperate. They've sold millions of the things. Even Steve Jobs admitted he was wrong about it.

I think they have a factual basis to not care much about your opinion.

and at $499 it cost me less than that laptop sitting up in your room charging...

"Sorry, I have a 300$ netbook, and it's fully charged, here it is actually... Look, you can even view Flash content and I have access to all my desktop applications, my work's VPN and all my tools. Now that I mention it, I better get back to work, my vacation is in 2 weeks, I can't wait to be sitting on a real beach instead of pool side here."

Wow, way to jump to conclusions! A bit of (unwarranted) condescension there?

No, I did not jump to conclusions, the poster I was replying to was pretending audiobooks were superior to an ereader. He was precisely saying what I concluded he did and replied to.

It's you that's jumping to conclusions.

And you are happy telling me this why ? I was not replying to you, why do you feel the need to justify yourself ? You did not pretend what I said the other poster pretended, so I don't quite get where you are getting at with your post.

BOOM!! Put that in your pipe and smoke it Apple!!!!!

Its a fair point though. There no getting away from the fact that the Kindle is a better option for reading outside on the beach etc. The iPad just doesnt cut it.

However overall the iPad is certainly heads and shoulders above the rest. Maybe a matt display on the horizon then??

Ill stand by to get flamed by the fanboys......

I would buy a Matte screen ipad instead. Horrible part is Apple used to offer more matte screen everything. Then the company got invaded by design noobs who care more about perception of style than quality of screen readability. Also, they didn't like to offer consumers options. It is cheaper if they didn't have to produce and distribute more than one screen option. Hence Matte screens getting marginalized.

Sad fact is ... shiny glossy screens sell more in the stores... then the owners of the new shiny hardware are left squinting and wondering why they cant read beyond the reflection in many settings.

personally, i think the babe reading a kindle is hot also. Sad fact is the display technology is rougher on the eyes when reading. it is like reading a tv, whereas the kindle actually is more like reading printed paper. don't try to play a videogame on a kindle though, the screen isn't built for video response.

I know they have sold millions of things. I purchase from Amazon weekly. I am a Prime member and they are the first place I look to buy anything before going to Apple Store, Best Buy, Micro Center etc. What is sad is their attempt to one up the iPad. I hope my Prime membership is not revoked.

Good points.

This ad makes two good points. Readability and price point are better for the Kindle.

I know the iPad has so much more to offer, but as someone who wants to read more, and knows how easily distracted and over-connected I can be, I would definitely consider getting a Kindle because of what it won't do.

Did you see the Apple commercial with the Kindle owner trying to read a book in a dimly lit environment?

Seriously, the glossy screen of the iPad poolside is for use as a mirrored surface for discreetly ogling the babe-age!

As MacDawg pointed out: It is not healthy for you to stay in direct sunlight - you will get cancer from that. Be smart and look for a shady spot - on the plus side, besides not getting cancer, you will be able to read books, browse the web, watch movies, play games, ... etc on some magical device.

Yeah, but that doesn't change the fact that battery life on the Kindle is significantly greater than battery life on the "magical device." Unless you want to attach yourself to a USB port, the Kindle is still better here.

Of course, iPad has its advantages, like the color screen, faster page turning, and less klunky UI.
