Could that broad be any more smug? lol

I've never found a use for tablets. Same goes for eReaders. Just buy a laptop and bring a book on your trip.

The Kindle is a one-dimensional LESSER ITEM than iPad.

It may do that one thing better, but it's less of a total package, and that makes it less desirable and less cool. And THAT's what matters.

Latest and greatest or nothing.

And Jobs goes grinning off to the bank!

Seriously - other than a bit of web surfing I genuinely dont have much of a "use" for the iPad - sure its lovely to have and I'd miss the convenience of it for web surfing, but a use to justify its price - hmmm not really.

Whereas the Kindle - I commute on a train 40 mins each way every day - and I read books - lots of them. Hence the Kindle is absolutely perfect in every way for this - I really cannot fault it. Have bought over 150 books so far from Amazon. It has a definite use and the price is incredibly affordable.

If you dont read a lot of books then it isnt for you - but if you do - to use it is to love it

The commercial is spot on. For reading outdoors on a sunny day, I won't even say direct sunlight as I've had issues even in moderate shade, glass/glossy screens suck. To all those who say but the kindle can't FILL_IN_THE_BLANK - well the iPad can't either in those conditions!

I have heard many, many complaints about reading on the iPad on, e.g., a dark plane. If you do not use the overhead light, many people feel that reading on that screen is very strenuous and difficult to do after a while. If you use the overhead light, there is a glare that makes it difficult to read....

I have heard complaints from people who find e-ink displays to be strenuous and annoying to deal with. Kindle readers suffer from an obnoxious "flicker" while the page refreshes, and still have a tedious (albeit rapidly improving) refresh rate.

To be fair, we have to accept that people have preferences when it comes to display technology and that neither current e-reader display technologies are perfect. We must also accept that eBooks allow us more convenience in the purchasing and storage of books that result in compromises in the reading experience.

While I think this commercial is great as it really plays on the Kindle's strength, it's also very easy for Apple to utterly trounce the Kindle based on the iPad's strengths. Like.. playing games, checking email, surfing the web, using Facebook, making a call with Skype, watching a movie, listening to music and accessing thousands of eBooks for free.

And it works in the dark.
I live in Sweden and I fully expect not to see the sun for at least 4 months straight, beginning a couple of weeks from now.

How is accessing thousands of eBooks for free on the ipad utterly trouncing the Kindle?

You can get them all and more on the Amazon store - Frankly I'd never buy a book from the iBooks store when I can get one from the Amazon store and use it on both the iPad and the Kindle.

BOOM!! Put that in your pipe and smoke it Apple!!!!!

Its a fair point though. There no getting away from the fact that the Kindle is a better option for reading outside on the beach etc. The iPad just doesnt cut it.

However overall the iPad is certainly heads and shoulders above the rest. Maybe a matt display on the horizon then??

Ill stand by to get flamed by the fanboys......

I have Both the Ipad and Kindle 3. The Kindle is a fantastic reader. there is no way I'm bringing my $800 + Ipad to the Beach, the $139 Kindle fits the bill for that nicely. And because I can use my Books on both Thanks to Calibre I can use the Ipad at times, but the Kindle goes outside.

Maybe Apple should follow up on this couple - and show the advantages of reading on an iPad in bed under dim light?

The Kindle 3 has a much faster page turn - I havent compared it to the iPad recently but it certainly can no longer be used as a valid criticism of the Kindle.

Apple commercial cuts to a couple in bed reading, as the lights go out, the Kindle side of the bed goes dark . . . .

"Hey, what are you doing, I need that light to read . . . ."

Or maybe the couple tries to pull up a new book, only to find its not available on Amazon because it's a Barnes and Noble exclusive . . . .

Well, as we all know, there's an App for that . .

So you have only one thing you can do that the competition can't do as well. Is that where the expression "one trick pony" came from?

LOL. Man, advertisers must LOVE you. If it's such a bad item, why have they sold millions with sales on the rise?

McDonald's, Burger King & Co. also sell millions of burgers every year, but nobody in his right mind would ever say that this is good and healthy food.

There are also still millions of alcoholics, drug addicts and smokers on the world. Following your line of logic, Marlboro & Co must be selling great products.

But since billions of people are still spending hours of their limited lifetime with watching TV, nothing should be surprising anymore. I guess that a million flies just can't be wrong: That brown soup they're sucking up must taste great.

But coming back to the original topic: The Kindle is a device that is great for the ONE purpose it was made for. But from my experience with the iPad I still fail to see what purpose it serves and what it would possibly excel it except for maybe computer versions of board games. It fails to be a good eBook reader because of its display and weight, it fails to be a good video playback device because of its SMALL display and slow CPU, it fails to be a good web surfing device because of its castrated web browser and it certainly cannot replace a notebook as a computing device because its such a closed and dumbed down platform. And on top of that, it's as expensive as a REAL notebook and because of its form factor, weight and fragility not even half as mobile as an iPhone or iPod Touch. It's just a sexy toy, but its effect wears off after a few days. And again, the Kindle has at least a clearly defined use and excels at that.

Yep, I'll agree with that.

Wow, Amazon just totally kicked Apple's a** right there.:)
You wish! And keep wishing.
How many people read books while sitting in central park? Millions have. No screens and in the sun. The sun! With all them uv rays. People have been reading books for thousands of years and not one of them have gone effing blind because of it. This tablet/e-reader game has some of you so caught up in the HYPE you don't even realize that it is pure BS marketing to get sells for their effing gadget.
Besides, who the fu*** reads in direct sunlight with a device that can shine the damn sun all up in their eyes? No one! We position such devices so we don't get the sun in our eyes. Hello!
The folks that can't connect the dots are bound to fall pray to this deceptive marketing. I have the ipad and it works wonderfully and I'm sure the kindle is great to.

That's a nice little shot at Apple. They are pretty flippin' bad for reading outside.

But, it's pretty much all they've got going for them feature for feature.

"$139" - that gets you no apps, no extra functionality, no nothing.

Exactly. Won't do a thing to affect the iPad assimilation. Wait till Rev B gets here with Face Time. Even with Apple allowing the Kindle App on the iPad sales must still be tanking to take such a direct hit. What is the answer when Samsung, Toshiba, and Google arrive? "Were more like ink". Nada.

So I wonder what the internal temp is on these devices while your sitting at the pool, seaside, in the meadow, on a bench with the sun beating down on the backside? Most don't rest it on their laps? They hold it up as in the commercial. Looks in the commercial that the sun is in front, not behind shining on the screen?

I'll bet they cook inside. Especially the one with the Black Back. :apple:

Had a Kindle...

I had a Kindle, but killed it by spilling water on it. So, bought an iPad. Love my iPad (mostly). Really miss my Kindle for reading books though, the e-ink is much easier on the eyes even after I try and compensate by lowering the iPad's brightness. I occasionally think about getting another Kindle for reading. I think the Kindle needs to be priced at $99 or less though. It would fly off the shelves then. That extra $39 is a great excuse to pass on a purchase. The $99 price point would be hard to resist for most people who read even if they already had an iPad.

Couldn't agree more. The glass screen was the first thing I noticed on the iPad that I did not like. It's also the sole reason I won't buy one. The glaring screen is so disturbing that I can't even use my Unibody MacBook properly when there is too much light around. My MacBook can stay on my desk, but the iPad is meant to be used on different places with different light.

While this won't help an ipad (at least not yet) you can get an anti-glare screen for your MBP here.

Everyone seems to be missing the obvious point about the commercial. Wear sunglasses, LOL. The commercial tries to sell the point that the kindle is able to read in direct sunlight but she's wearing sunglasses the whole time and he's not. What if the guy had sunglasses he wouldn't be complaining. DUH? hahaha

Have you ever tried looking at an iPad with polarized sunglasses? The screen is COMPLETELY BLACK, unless you turn it sideways.

$99 after the iPad II announcement in Nov. :apple:

AHAHA Apple just got served
Fanbois unite!
Stupid pos iPad

Ha ha! And Apple is slated to sell 8 million ipads this year. Yeah, they got served. Oh and by the way, are we going to have every billboard and just about every piece of printed text on a Kindle cause according to Amazon, not mother nature/god or whatever you believe in, reading without a kindle will blind you. Wow! After all these years of opening my eyes along with billions of people, Jeff Bezos has concluded that Kindle will thwart blindness. GTFOOH!!!!
You sir/miss are caught up in the hype but like Public Enemy said, "DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE!"
YOU FAILED SO BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wow Amazons really got something there...

guess I will have to figure out if I'm sitting in direct sunlight or indoors the majority of the time

I cant even think of a time I have been sitting in direct sunlight in the last year and wanted/needed to read a book or use a computer

Obviously the Kindle is not targeted to people who still live in their parents' basement.

The iPad is great. The Kindle is great.

Problem for Apple with people like me who use both - the Kindle app on the iPad lets me go between devices and pick up where I left off on either. I'd like to use iBooks, it's really nice and has a really slick store. But I can't read iBooks on my Kindle.
