"Sorry, I have a 300$ netbook, and it's fully charged, here it is actually... Look, you can even view Flash content and I have access to all my desktop applications, my work's VPN and all my tools. Now that I mention it, I better get back to work, my vacation is in 2 weeks, I can't wait to be sitting on a real beach instead of pool side here."

Sad fact is ... shiny glossy screens sell more in the stores... then the owners of the new shiny hardware are left squinting and wondering why they cant read beyond the reflection in many settings.

The glossy screen is not the issue. It's the inherent dimness of the screen compared to the brightness of the sun.

Thinking about getting a Kindle actually. Weren't they $359 when they came out 2 years ago?

I'd bet money they'll be $99 by Christmas!
Wait for 3 months and save an extra $40...absolutely!

Although I only read a few books a month, I was considering getting a Kindle. If it reaches $99 I'll buy one for sure. In the mean time my Ipad fits me perfectly.

Certainly makes its point... if a big book-reader purchases an iPad primarily for its e-book reader they get a big ol' "fail". As a book-reader the Kindle is irreplaceable.

I don't know why they're trying to take on Apple, though... and maybe they're not. Maybe the message is, "You got an iPad? You still need a Kindle." As the price of the Kindle goes down there's certainly little reason to not purchase one in addition to other electronics.

Great ad, but, who reads in direct sunlights, by a pool no less, with a device that costs that much… :p

Ive had my kindle for what 2 weeks now and it feels like a book - Ive taken it to the beach and read it while sitting on my towel. I dont have an ipad (and after buying the kindle, i realise that i dont need an ipad
) My iphone is good for apps and the kindle is great for reading......

Fine.If all you need is a reader and don't want color the Kindle is great.

I only occasionally use my iPad for reading, and never outside,so no Kindle for me.
I can understand why many people love them, though.

Bottom line, this ad probably won't affect the sales of either.

Isn't the woman in this ad just as smug and smarmy as Justin Long was accused of being in the I'm a Mac ads?

Yeah, but that doesn't change the fact that battery life on the Kindle is significantly greater than battery life on the "magical device." Unless you want to attach yourself to a USB port, the Kindle is still better here.

Of course, iPad has its advantages, like the color screen, faster page turning, and less klunky UI.

If over 10 hours isn't enough battery life(probably a lot more if strictly reading)I'd love to know why.

Silly

No one buys an iPad specifically for it's e-reader functionality. It's just kind of an added bonus that's limited in some way as a trade-off for the thing also being an almost fully functional computer. The fact that the kindle is so cheap now just means its now affordable to have both. Use the iPad for the billion other things one uses it for and use your kindle when reading books outdoors (or at all). Personally I never read outdoors and If i did, I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to find a shady area. Cute commercial though

Ps. Aren't they're overlays/screen protectors that completely negate this issue?

It's a very effective ad, making a very valid point...for what little it does, the cost of the kindle is a value, and in the area of readability in bright light it's superior to iPad.

Hey, maybe Apple should come out with a matte-screen iPad. :)

Matte-screens rule. I mean I'm not going to pay $1000 and use an iPad strictly as an e-Picture frame. I don't care so much how great photo's look in a dark room with low light, rather, I care chiefly about how easily I can read the screen to actually do something useful with the iPad.

Matte-screen iPad FTW! :)

Or in Apple lingo, "Anti-Glare" ... a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. :)

Where it "Really Counts"

Apple can easily refuted it with an ad depicting the man reading on the bed with his wife/girl sleeping at the side, without any lighting in the room.

Now, think of it. Is it more frequent and practical reading in the comfort of room or reading at the pool side in the risk of sunburn?

And, guys, half the population on the globe try their best to avoid direct sunlight.

Yes, Amazon Ad....
If you had spent the money you did on the kindle (3G version) and sunglasses, you'd have an iPad!

Oh, you don't want an iPad? Well, your going to be required to purchase a pair of sunglasses (for protection of course) if you'd like to like to partake in what the add is suggesting.

So what has this add showed us?

"That the kindle excels over the iPad where only few can be or want to go unless wearing the proper protection"!

How can they seriously compare the two devices?

Apple needs to come out with a response commercial showing some cat laughing at some you tube video... then bouncing over to send the video to his friends via email, then firing up Facebook to tell his friends about the nerd sitting next to him salivating, then close the commercial with the guy opening the Kindle App on his iPad to read a book.

I have to agree with the people saying that Kindle is not trying to take out iPad sales with this. They are appealing to people who want to read in the sun and/or don't like reading on an LCD. Buy them both, ours is cheap! They are also putting themselves up against the iPad and not other readers. Avis had a very successful campaign years ago seemingly directed at Hertz, the #1 car rental company. The truth was that they were no big threat to Hertz but as a result of "We're #2 we try harder" they buried National (#3).

-bringing the kindle on a long hike
-leaving the kindle always in a car
-usually forget to charge my devices
-is used by several people and some of them don't charge it

seriously, of course we are almost always less than 8hrs away from an outlet. however there is a convenience factor in not having to think about charging your device for weeks. if you travel a lot and spend lots of time away from home it's just a hassle to go down to the parking garage (half a mile if you are in NYC) and get your kindle just to charge it because you might need it in a week when you drive to the beach.....

Expensive sun glasses! By the time I've paid shipping, taxes, import duties, its $169US then the conversion to Canadian makes it $172. I'd never pay more than $20 for sunglasses. :p

BTW, what a crappy pickup line. :D

reading on a backlit screen always causes eye strain.

the light is going right at your face from the source, instead of being projected from somewhere else onto a page (or onto your Kindle screen).

It's 100% better for reading.

remember that video game called "crazy taxi" ?
that game was wayyy better than the taxi mini game in GTA 3.

get it?

Never once did the above user mention "it is better to read on an iPad".
He mentioned how there is the possibility to read in the dark with a sleeping spouse/GF. Not sure where the person saying "it strains your eyes". We all know that, the iPad never ever said that is what they are solely for or that they are attempting to compete....reading is simply an added feature. An added feature that is the sole feature on a kindle

If you had spent the money you did on the kindle (3G version) and sunglasses, you'd have an iPad!

If you spent $150 on glasses and $190 on a Kindle 3G, you still need to spend another $160 to get to the cheapest iPad model ($500).

Outdoors? In sunlight? Well, I am a vampire, so I can relate to that last one.

Did you skip math? ;)

This brings up something I've always been curious about and had forgotten about until now. When I first got my iPad a friend happened to be coming over anyway. The VERY FIRST thing he did was almost literally run outside with it to see if it could be read/used while outside.

I clearly remember him saying "You can't read this outside!" It was in DIRECT sunlight and I still don't know why he checked that first rather than mess with Safari or touch or anything else most people fool around with when handed an iPad.

I've sent him an email asking why he checked it's readability before anything else. I'm seriously suspecting that somewhere, on some radio or tv show someone was critical of the iPad before it was released saying it would be horrible to read books on the beach with it. Likely someone who thought they could read their James Patterson "I-read-it-all-by-myself" "novels" on it.
