The Kindle is a one-dimensional LESSER ITEM than iPad.

It may do that one thing better, but it's less of a total package, and that makes it less desirable and less cool. And THAT's what matters.

Latest and greatest or nothing.

then turn up the brightness duh?

Funny how that argument disappears when a thread about iBooks pop up and then the iPad is the greatest thing ever as far as book reading is considered.

Or some people are just tired of the double standards coming from some more enthusiastic Apple users. "iPad is better than books! Read anything, carry it all at once! What Kindle has an ad showing it's better than iPad as an e-reader ? Pffft.. who reads anyway, just use audiobooks. For reading, nothing beats a real book...".

Funny how you managed to competely misunderstand that part while pointing it out. The Kindle lets her read with her sunglasses, the iPad, even without sunglasses, doesn't let the guy read. If he had sunglasses, he wouldn't see better, it would be worse. There's already not enough light from his screen, sunglasses which reduce the amount of light that reaches your eyes would only make it worse...

funny how you try to sound smart but completely misspell completely...but i digress...just turn up the damn brightness.

meh

Kinda works as an ad if that is all you want, but in truth I wouldn't be using either by a pool, particularly not a public one, so on that count I wouldn't have to endure smug bleachy teeth anyway.

So then the new Nano is rubbish as it doesn't do half the things the old one did. Apple TV too

Or just keep your iPad because it's . . . an iPad. App Store, web, games, vnc goodness, downloading, iWork, spreadsheets, keynote, music, navigation, GoodReader, and the joy of using iOS, oh . . . and iBooks, just not in direct sunlight.

Pretty fair trade-off. You have an iPad = no reason for a Kindle. Which is exactly what's bugging the hell out of Amazon.

I get all of those on my Macbook. I don't need a separate device to do those things; the iPad is not a replacement for it.

The Kindle is a replacement for my books, however. And for £99 I can get a Kindle, whereas I'd need to fork out £429 just for the base model iPad.

I think the point with the sunglasses is they wanted to make it clear that she didn't get the Kindle because she is poor and can't afford an iPad. Amazon doesn't want to be the reader for poor people...
Spot on!

wow Amazons really got something there...

guess I will have to figure out if I'm sitting in direct sunlight or indoors the majority of the time

I cant even think of a time I have been sitting in direct sunlight in the last year and wanted/needed to read a book or use a computer

The iPad is a suitable e-reader on a dark airplane just as a Kindle is suitable e-reader in the sun.

I have heard many, many complaints about reading on the iPad on, e.g., a dark plane. If you do not use the overhead light, many people feel that reading on that screen is very strenuous and difficult to do after a while. If you use the overhead light, there is a glare that makes it difficult to read....

Probably not, since the kindles functionality is only a subset of the iPads. However, I know plenty of people that have a Kindle in addition to iPad. They use the Kindle for eBooks, the iPad for all the rest.

The kindle is fantastic for the (limited) use is was made for. Why not use the best device for every purpose. iPad and Kindle can coexist - its not about who is better since they are too different.

I guess this ad is to point this out, that iPad users can/should get a Kindle for eBook reading.

Exactly. I'd take a $139 device where I might think twice about an iPad or a MacBook such as when on a beach all day or by a pool with kids splashing. I'd agree having both an Apple device for most things (even reading indoors) and a Kindle for those pesky wet, sunny or 'in danger of theft' areas is a reasonable idea especially when on vacation.

It's also a fraction of the price, is lighter, has much better battery life and can be read in any light that you can read a real book in, and in the dark with the lighted cover. What actually matters, except to shallow people maybe, has nothing to do with "cool", but suitability for purpose. I will most likely buy a gen 2 iPad, but that won't replace my Kindle for travelling.

Good. I'm glad Amazon decided to use a some stuck up bimbo snob to represent their Kindle.

"it cost less than these sunglasses." Cool lady... Real cool.

What a ****** commercial. Summers over.

You're an idiot if you take either device to read near the pool. You're asking for water to kill either device. $6 paperback beats both products.

You're further an idiot if you sit out in the direct sun for any length of time you would be reading a book. Good luck destroying your skin and dealing with skin cancer.

If thy aren't competing, then why spend millions on a national ad campaign directed against the iPad???

they are advertising their product in a way that highlights one of the most common complaints about reading from digital devices - screen glare and the resultant discomfort while reading.

The ipad (which is not branded) is merely representative of other digital devices - my guess is that the majority of kindle buyers may not even recognise it as an ipad, but the would recognise the glare issue as it is apparent on almost all digital devices today.

The products compete on one area, and in that area, the kindle wins hands down.

One could also compare the ipad to a watch, as both tell the time, but I sure wouldn't want an ipad on my wrist. :)

LOL. Man, advertisers must LOVE you. If it's such a bad item, why have they sold millions with sales on the rise?

I am astounded that people are trying to spin this by saying no one reads outside or that they shouldn't because of skin cancer. Are you kidding me?

These of course are the same people who trash OLED because you can't read it in the sunlight.

Despite your discontent, people buy expensive sunglasses before going on holiday, and amazon are merely pointing out that buying a kindle can be seen as a similarly frivolous/impulsive pre-holiday purchase.

Finally, some sense

This commercial makes a good point... but, what freak would sit poolside reading an iPad or Kindle? What freak would sit outside reading one of these?

Kindle is nice. However, what can it do? Might as well just read a book.

The kind of freak who goes to a hotel where the guests behave themselves and dont run around like spoiled children?

As for just reading a book - well I read ten books on my recent three week work trip to India - fantastic not to have to carry heavy hardbacks in my luggage - just needed an iPad and a Kindle in my hand baggage.

I have both devices but would never now read a book on the iPad - just too heavy and cumbersome on a packed commuter train. I use my Kindle 3 for that, and have the case with the reading light should I ever use it.

At home I have the Kindle DX for reading. The iPad is now purely used for sofa surfing and checking webmail in the office - more comfortable than the fiddly little screen of the iPhone - and I get a much better 3G connection on the pad

The Kindle has gotten super-affordable, and as a N-reader (novel), there's no real competition. That said, the iPad obviously does a ton more stuff...

... but I do agree that there's definitely room for the Kindle and the iPad to coexist. See both of them all the time in my city.

While I think this commercial is great as it really plays on the Kindle's strength, it's also very easy for Apple to utterly trounce the Kindle based on the iPad's strengths. Like.. playing games, checking email, surfing the web, using Facebook, making a call with Skype, watching a movie, listening to music and accessing thousands of eBooks for free.

And it works in the dark.
I live in Sweden and I fully expect not to see the sun for at least 4 months straight, beginning a couple of weeks from now.
