Why would Apple lock itself into another exclusivity deal with the carriers this time around?

I'd expect it to use WiFi and have the ability to work with the carrier of your choice by adding a SIM card if you want but not required. Especially if this device is destined to replace the low end MacBook. Not everyone needs internet everywhere. Especially if it is a larger device. For school work or home, you probably have WiFi access already. But cell carrier connection would be available for those who want it, just not a requirement at purchase.

Do you think they might do something like Amazon's Kindle where it uses cell technology but the user doesn't have to worry about contracts or bills?

Thoughts on a vivisection

Has anyone ever opened up an IPhone recently to see exactly what is in it? I mean, is Apple hiding things from us? Do we have Iphones that can do any band at any time (bandWIDTH, I mean) already? Not just bi-(CDMA/GSM), but pan-(all other flavors, past and future, here and there)!

I am reminded of the rumors swirling about my old Nintendo Chunky Cartridge Interface, the Super Mario Bros. one: rumors that the rectangular plastic cover on the bottom concealed a slot making said consoles compatible, expandable, mutable and--of course--even more profitable and desirable! I never did find out, but I remember-with-a-charge this particular private part of future possibility affixed to the backside of my little, hard Nintendo box, a gamy yet antiseptic tool given to hours of pubescent pleasure.

I can only make the natural comparison: is the fulfillment we desire already present beneath the many skins of the eternal and proverbial Apple? I would hate to think anyone would hold out on us--we are only human...

Huh? If you are trying to say that there's a CDMA chip in the iPhone, that does not exist.

That might be interesting. The Kindle is more niche than I think the App-blet© is going to be. Which means it will most likely consume more bandwidth than an occasional book download. I don't know if any company will want to eat those costs including Apple. :)

Honestly, if Verizon gets the iPhone, they will possibly be the best service provider in the United States. If they get the future tablet on their network too, well, a few companies may end up going extinct.

Yeah, the bandwidth would preclude this I bet. Good call. :)

I would throw my AT&T iPhone out the window and pay the ETF in a second if Verizon picked up the iPhone. My guess is, I wouldn't be alone....

I totally agree, too much money and time on R&D for something that represent less than 20% of the global market

aw, only 20% of 5 billion? yer right, that is chump change. wait, apple doesn't have close to 20% of the market... they should stop spending all that time and money.

Well guess what, your iPod Touch can't make cellphone calls either. What??? Apple still sells this?

dude, that is a ridiculously stupid thing to say. it makes no sense at all. we are all dumber for having read it.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon - as seen in the Nexus One - contains a HSPA and EVDO baseband processor, enabling the same chip to be used in both versions of the handset.

"Qualcomm and other vendors have been unable to produce the necessary chips to meet Apple's timeline."

prettttty sure the nexus can't be on both networks (but, that would be awesome). "timeline" being the operative word... "announcing" isn't the same as "shipping" .... surprised an apple fan wouldn't know that. :D

and finally... Verizon has one of the worst logos of any major corporation. seriously, that thing is hideous. the V just kinda... fades off? really? those big black signs with the skinny little fadey V... man those stores are ugly.

It is going to be really funny to see the reaction of the people saying the iPhone is not coming to Verizon when it finally does. Get over it people its coming!

Not sure why it's such a big deal to have a Verizon logo on it.

I'm pretty sure 99.9% of the population really couldn't give two squirts of monkey urine.

What are you going to do when Verizon gets hampered by the same network issues?

Make telephone calls (without drops) to complain about slow 3G speeds.

If it happens, not when.

You apparently don't see the number of Verizon EVDO cards in laptops that I do - and laptops average far higher data rates than smart phones.

I've rarely seen EVDO slow down in spite of the load (the LVCC during CES, for example). In fact, during CES I've sometimes had to use my EVDO link because the hotel network is completely saturated by all the techies at CES.

How do you know?

i rarely post but i just had to login and say this - are you serious? the iphone has been teared down to pieces (original, 3G, 3GS) and there is ONLY a gsm chip inside. we would have known by now (since mid 2007) if it was a hybrid cdma/gsm phone. in fact, a few posts above yours, flopticalcube posted a link to a 3GS teardown.

Reasons why T-Mobile would be better:

1. For people who hate AT&T, it's not.
2. No redesign or revision of chipset (other than support new radio waves)
3. No slapped red logo everywhere
4. Talk/Web surf at same time... CDMA technology can't do that no matter what.
5. T-Mobile's empty and ready network.

Also the main fact that Verizon has been dissing on the iPhone for quite a while now, dubbing many of their phones iPhone Killers...

#3: There's nothing to support the idea that Verizon would do that.
#4: Nobody really does that...it was just a red herring AT&T threw out there for purposes of silly comparison.
#5: T-Mobile's network is extremely tiny and awful. They have nowhere near the coverage of even AT&T, much less Verizon. They have cheaper rates for a reason: their network sucks.

The last point I do agree with, though. Jobs probably didn't take to kindly to the dissing, and I'm sure it'll be in the back of his mind.

Then Jobs should be canned, if his personal feelings get in the way of doing what is right for Apple's shareholders. Jobs does not own Apple, he reports to the shareholders.

But, I suspect that it's water off a duck's back. Jobs is on record time and time again saying something that he knows isn't true ("nobody wants to watch video on an Ipod") when it helps sales, and he knows that Intel didn't hold a grudge about the snail ad and other over-the-top Apple stunts during the PPC days.

He probably admires the "there's a map for that" and the "Droid does" ad campaigns for their witty story lines.

So, I don't believe that Jobs' personal feelings affect his drive to take Apple where he wants to go. He'd sleep with Steve Ballmer if it would help Apple.

I agree, it going to be funny to see what people is going to make up when Apple don't bring it to VRZ, get over it it's no coming to VRZ anytime soon

I am bore and this was the perfect post to troll the forum..... but really get over it is not coming

Thanks!

Yes, you are right, and I read it. But what does a CDMA phone have that this Iphone did not? How do we know it incompatible with CDMA? No one looked for anything that should not have been there, officially. Total conspiracy.

We need the advanced mobile phone experience of the Japanese public to help us; aren't they up to 6G or something like that? Surely they could identify any trickery/profit motive indicated by the makeup of our (to them) ancient phones' innards. Maybe I should get my phone and contract from Japan, as I am sure they have worldwide coverage included by now. Total conspiracy.

im thinking that iphone will eventually be available on Verizon in USA. Because as we have seen Apple likes to have the phone available on as many carriers as possible. Here in Canada, iphone is available on 4 carriers with 5th one coming soon. Samething happened in UK too.

Since the country where Apple has been selling most of the iphones is USA, and with Verizon being the largest carrier of the country(right?), it only make sense if they make it available on it.

Also, we have seen many companies making both CDMA/GSM and HSPA versions of cellphones, so its not really a hard thing to do.

Bottom line : More customers = more profit , So why not?

Very good...I will switch. I have my iPhone and a vwerizon for the 80% my att phone dies!!!!!

If Verizon does get an iPhone around June, AT&T is going to be kicking themselves for not offering subsidies on the 3GS to 3G users last June. I would have bought a new 3GS with a new 2 year contract if I could have. Now I'll be waiting at least until June to see what is released. AT&T could have locked me and many others up for another year but now risks losing hordes of people to Verizon.

they will make it up on the new android and webos customers they are about to get

I don't buy it.

Apple chose the GSM band for the phone because of the potential for worldwide deployment. Why would they spend R&D on a product that would sell maybe 20% of the total sales of their current phone and only be available on one specific network in one country?

Where else is CDMA used?

I think talk of the iPhone on Verizon's network is wishful thinking. We'll see it on T-Mobile (US) before Verizon.

I agree! Who uses CDMA anymore?
