On a side note: With the iPhone opening all over, and the MASSIVE influx of smart phones, app stores, and even laptops, and now tablets, and e-readers etc. I am beginning to wonder if we are going to have universal wireless network overloads all over the world. I don't know that they are ready for all of this yet! In the future I see people having one wireless bill and everything being connected. But I don't think all the networks are ready for it! They might be barely scrapping by until LTE! Anyone else concerned or thought about that???

Actually, most other carriers in the world are fine. Why? Because they don't offer unlimited data. The reality is that wireless bandwidth, regardless of the technology, is a limited resource. Current pricing provides zero incentives for customers to treat it as such. The vast majority of foreign carriers understand this and price accordingly. Unless we wake up and follow suite, every carrier is going to be plagued by issues before too long.

We here in America don't really seem to "get" anything that has limits. Data plans are just one of the many, many examples.

Not to defend AT&T here (ha!) Part of the arrangement with AT&T and Apple was that Apple would be the *SOLE* advertiser on the iPhone.

This is why you don't see any AT&T commercials that include the iPhone.

w00master

Your correct they never mention the iPhone in name, but they use it when they are comparing how many applications they have compared to Verizon. They also use it when they say they have the most popular smart phones.

The funny part is at the end of the commercial they usually show a couple of Samsung phones (or something else) that can't even use the applications. Talk about bait and switch!

Yeah, pretty much true.
It's because both Apple and at&t have this unique partnership.. At&t will let Apple be Apple and Apple let's at&t be at&t.
So baisically what they trying to say is, "you know what.. I'm the one with the cellphone, and you're the one giving the phone service. You do what you gotta do, and I'll just manage the phone itself. Simple as that."
BAM!! Agreement :)

Argue all you want about CDMA and GSM. Apple could increase market share just by opening iPhone up to any GSM carrier in the U.S. - if it WANTS to.

The big news here (if there is any at all) is that the Tablet will NOT be a netbook by any measure. It will be a large iPod Touch and that's about it (no matter how cute the interface).

The best I'm hoping for now, is decent Mac-like word processing. If it's no better than iPhone, there's NO SALE, and I suffer a Win 7 netbook for my ultraportable computing needs (thanks a bunch, Apple).

LOL @ at&t fanboys.

Here's the bottom line:

-The U.S. is the largest market in the world for the iPhone.
-Verizon is the largest wireless carrier in the U.S.
-There are MANY people who have Verizon and want an iPhone.
-Many of those many people won't leave Verizon to get an iPhone because the network is superior.

By creating a CDMA iPhone, not only do you get Verizon, you get Sprint too, as well as parts of Japan.

How can Apple pass that up? To the shareholders, it's literally this simple...

1) Collect Underpants
2) ????????
3) PROFIT!

iPhone is coming to Verizon, and I'm holding off upgrading my phone (contract is up later this month) until it's announce.

Shut up! As long as the commercial is "literally accurate" factoring in ONLY the script, and IGNORING the visual "dramatization", it is golden. Get off their a** . . . . .

I like choice......

....but I am not choosing Verizon.

  1. Slower Network
  2. CDMA is only in the US
  3. No concurrent voice/data
  4. Must pay extra for Visual Voice Mail.
  5. No free wifi hot spots.
  6. No rollover minutes.

The biggest difference is the lack of concurrent voice/data. I need this for my business....I am constantly on the phone while viewing presentations over the internet. I'd lose customers if I went to Verizon.

So if/when Verizon gets iPhone, will AT&T still be selling them?

These chips can be for the new Apple Tablet. I don't see iPhone coming to Verizon yet because of the lacking of features already provided like concurrent data/voice for example.

It's interesting that the report "comfirming" PA Semi as the CPU supplier for Apple's tablet doesn't actually mention ARM. I wonder if there is still any chance of it being low power PowerPC based, which was PA Semi's specialty.

It would not be like Apple to come out with a CDMA phone at its well known very end of its useful life.

Apple is likely to incidentally make the iSlate CDMA compatible despite its primary markets being everything else. If it does that it may also make it LTE compatible to lean on Verizon to deploy "real" 4G sooner not later.

Given how Verizon treated Apple/Steve in 2006-7, any leaning they get now is well deserved. It is, after all, AT&T that has 4000% network usage growth and unprecedented user growth of a "sticky" nature. Verizon needs Apple 10x as much as Apple needs Verizon.

Verizon should pay Apple to adopt THEM. 15% OF OUTSTANDING STOCK SOUNDS FAIR. 15% of $90.7B = $13.6B. Chump change.

Yeah Verizon is dying without the iPhone...That's completely untrue. They are still the biggest US carrier. They've got plenty of fantastic phones. Nexus One, Droid, Droid Eris, Pre, enV3, enV Touch, Blackberries.

Yeah Apple is gonna get 15% stock...that will NEVER happen. It's 1 phone.

AT&T: I'll take a $15 data plan, thank you very much. Oh, you don't want to give it to me? Well then what other incentive are you going to offer me to stick around? Haha, just watch as the AT&T network starts working fine by the end of the year. That's because half the iPhone's will be gone!

If Verizon really wants to maximize the switch, they'll pay off people's contracts to switch. Now that would be great!

I cannot stress how important it is for me and the 20+ people I know that want an iPhone to have a Verizon iPhone. Unfortunately, an annual upgrade is the only option for us since the contracts run for 2 years. As teenagers, we cannot afford the cancellation fees and the Verizon service here is FLAWLESS.

As I see all these rumors and actions going on around Apple and Verizon, I can't help but feel a shimmer of hope every time. I can only see good coming out of a Verizon iPhone :D

Would you please stop annoying the "anti-fanbois"? Facts are annoying.

It really boggles my mind how some Apple fans DON'T want the iPhone on Verizon.

Apple will shatter their 2009 profit margins with a Verizon phone alone.

AT&T Vs. Verizon

I'm getting a little tired of the whole "Verizon is the holy grail of all cell providers and AT&T sucks" bit. I'm in no way defending AT&T when I say this because they most certainly do have their short comings, but....

If Verizon is so great, why doesn't their network work on the iPhone, which, is arguably the most influential and advanced mobile platform in history?

Verizon missed the boat, folks. It isn't about iPhone not working on Verizon, it's Verizon that doesn't work on the iPhone.

AT&T (Cingular at the time), stuck their neck out for Apple. It is possible that without that original deal, Apple would have delayed or possibly never created an iPhone.

So back to all the bickering I suppose.

So the big question that probably has been asked already...

Do they expect us to pay a SECOND monthly data fee and subscription plan for this tablet, or can we pop the SIM in from our iPhones and use it on the tablet when needed?

I love my iPhone but I'm already paying out the ass for it monthly.

I predict that Apple will offer users a choice between a paid data plan(I think users may be lucky and be able to choose between ATT and a CDMA providor), and an ad-subsidized data service (note apples most recent aquistion).

A wild guess, but I think the recent aquisition, along with some patents regarding advertising make it an educated wild guess.

Same regurgitated BS from the post before. I ain't responding until you come with convincing stuff to support your points. I did give you... otherwise it's BS you can pull out your head.

Why dont you post some proof of the crap you are spouting. You're making sweeping generalizations without providing an ounce of proof yourself.

You really should quit making statements as if they are fact when you have not a clue of what you speak about. You are not on Apples board, you're not working in their engineering and R&D department. You dont have a clue what they are working on or planning on doing.

If the iphone does come to Verizon, why would it be US only? Verizon has CDMA Worldpone Blackberry's that operate as CDMA in the US and it has a SIM for international coverage.

Unless we wake up and follow suite, every carrier is going to be plagued by issues before too long.

Yep, and right now Verizon is like the backup QB. Everyone loves them until they actually get in the game and face the same problems as the starter.

After Microsoft's tablet, another company, Sony just released some pictures about its own tablet. Engadget claims that it will be around 200 USD. Whatever Apple is planning, it has to be quick and its tablet has to be reasonably priced. The genie is out and this time, Apple will face tough competition. A new breed of tech companies are not concerned with integrating their OS, their phones and their computers. But I'm glad that Apple's tablet is rumoured not to have the Atom processor. It would be hugely embarrassing, especially after Jobs' “We don’t know how to build a sub-$500 computer that is not a piece of junk” comment. I think this quote will haunt Apple in a few weeks time.

I like that analogy. I recall that the "coach" offered Verizon the starting position.....but that Verizon chickened out.

Apple never has and never will cater to the commodity computer market. And it has worked just fine for them.

Why would Apple lock itself into another exclusivity deal with the carriers this time around?

I'd expect it to use WiFi and have the ability to work with the carrier of your choice by adding a SIM card if you want but not required. Especially if this device is destined to replace the low end MacBook. Not everyone needs internet everywhere. Especially if it is a larger device. For school, work or home, you probably have WiFi access already. But cell carrier connection would be available for those who want it, just not a requirement at purchase.
