If only we the people had 100% say on what should be/not in computers. Just imagine

Just look at generic PC's out there. Apple is the only (stubborn) company that controls its products tightly enough. Most other companies just put in all the crap people keep asking.

Breaking News

Ohhhh my god the apple store is down

macbook pro updates today....

This site cracks me up. Within 10 minutes of reading the forums I had already been assimilated into the "desperately waiting for a new MBP" crew. And here I am, refreshing the thread every 5 minutes.

yeah its just fathers day stuff.

anyways i agree with him to expect MBPs at WWDC, but I also expect to see the iPhone announced at WWDC as well as Leopard. Leopard will take a while in the keynote but the iPhone is a quick "hello its now shipping!" and the MBP is really just about 10 mins to say that weve now got Santa Rosa, and perhaps LED backlighting and stuff like that. WWDC is gonna be alllll about leopard though.

As for iMac and mac mini, i really do expect them to be paper launches. iMacs and mac minis dont fit in well with the overall pro theme of WWDC, but since they are well overdue for refreshes theyll probably just paper launch them with Santa Rosa, or a slight mention alongside the MBP launch during the keynote.

student discounts

Does anyone know if apple will be doing the buy a mac get a free ipod deal for students like last year. I really would like a free ipod with my new macbook pro.

Munster expects new MacBook Pros and "also possible" a new iMac at the developer's conference in June. This echos many recent rumors reports found on the interent. As well, he expects that Apple will host a separate event in late June to launch the iPhone, rather than launch at WWDC itself.

Does anybody else think that it is totally absurd that Apple wouldn't talk about iPhone at WWDC? I understand that it is a developers conference...but come on -- The iPhone is the biggest thing to happen to Apple in quite a while. It would be crazy for them to NOT talk about it!!

My predictions for WWDC:

iPhone
Leopard
iLife

Macbook Pro Update BEFORE WWDC!!
You heard it FIRST right here on MR.

I have a dream... I dream that the iMac will have a detaching wi-fi screen with a touch interface. I will be able to remove this screen from the iMac Base Station and roam free. I could use this screen to access the Internet from any wi-fi hot spot or link to any mac in my local network wirelessly. This is only a dream. :)

Why don't you just get a MacBook Pro? I mean... they are made from the same stuff.

I heard that little green lepricons are being announced at WWDC and their unicorn counterparts this tuesday.

It will be totally awesome if apple releasedthe macbook pros
with World wide internet built in.

That way i can use my iphone as a modem and use the data plan i have with cingular for when i am on the road.

But for some reason apple calls them "pro" laptops but lacking in the true essence of a pro machine (a processor and ram is only half of what a pro machine should be)

I just hope a new design plus ssd, wwi,a fingerprint scanner,a beefed up video card and some type of HIGH DEF SUPPORT BOTH IN HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE. If aple fails to deliver at least 3 of the mentioned items on the "pro" line-they should just drop the name and call it something else.

This makes absolutely NO sense whatsoever. The internet built in?

Lay off the heavy drugs man. It's just not worth it.;) ;)

Powerbook G5 next tuesday......or maybe the new G6 dare to imagine.

On the analyst topic, they do regurgitate everything we read on MR, but there are investors that would rather make decisions on what the expert analysts write than what is written on this rumor site (even if it is the same thing). I do agree that they are being paid for something they didn't really come up with, but that has happened before with operating systems I think.

Being an 'anal-yst' as good as any, speaking out of my butt...if there are any updates to the MBP (forget about iMac, separate from WWDC altogether) @WWDC, they will only be MB style speed bumps, nothing else-you heard it here:eek: 1st.

Actually, I think now, what with the super accurate Digitimes notation on LED backlit screens on order (and taking much longer to actually be put into a shipping MBP), we'll see Apple release nothing at WWDC other than the iPhone ;) (that's why Leopard is delayed until Oct, recall ;) ).

Laggard's Apple, they don't need no stinking Santa Rosa update at the same time as all the other PC laptops. Apple is a leader, not a lemming...MBP 'real' update will not ship until it gets LED backlit 2k res in both 15.4 & 17in.

Will it be a mobile P6 version slightly slower 4Ghz, "doubles the speed of the previous generation POWER5™ while using nearly the same amount of electricity to run and cool it", barnburner just like the stillborn G5 PB?

No, it will be the next speed bumped Merom @2.6Ghz (C2E with Apple "exclusive" locked multiplier, as opposed to PC's which will be fully unleashed X7800's), Apple will be 1st to market (about a week) with this 'exclusive' shipping in July Intel 2.6Hgz C2E CPU, along with the 2k res. LED blu screens, lol. Then shortly thereafter PC gaming laptops will be announced with C2E, overclocked to 2.8Ghz or higher :p

Intel mobile Core 2 Extreme, price cuts leaked

I think you'll find that an increasing number of laptop buyers plan to use them with external monitor, keyboard and mouse when at home - and nowhere is this more true than with Apple laptops, due to the lack of a reasonably priced headless option. For mainstream Mac buyers who already have or prefer a separate monitor, a laptop is the only realistic option. I suspect this is a deliberate strategy on the part of Apple.

This trend means that the GPU needs to be capable of doing a good job with 24" or even 30" screen. Yes, Apple's tech specs for the 256MB MBP GPU claim to be capable of 2560 x 1600 but it's doubtful the performance is great at that resolution.

Expect special emphasis on this form of non-mobile use when the MBP GPUs are next upgraded i.e. "The Complete Desktop Replacement" etc.

512MB GPU is only necessary for maximum gaming performance, but at the penalty of shortened battery life (consumes too much power)...unless and until HD encoding/decoding in the next versions of Apple's software necessitates additional mem (newer smaller nm process memory, that is more energy efficient may allow for a mobile 512MB GPU in an Apple laptop of the future).

4k resolution screens are already being driven by 256MB GPU's, like Matrox's Parhelia"Multi-card, multi-display 2D/3D OpenGL and Microsoft DirectX acceleration"; 256MB or greater, isn't necessary for 2560x1600 unless you're talking about superior gaming performance.

Timing?

I posted this on another thread but I'm not quite sure where to ask...

Does anyone know how long the delay usually is between an announcement at WWDC and availability of the new computers in stores?

I'm leaving the country on the 16th of June and need a new computer before then. The place I'm going doesn't have ready or cheap availability of Apples.

Thanks for any insights : )

i highly doubt new iMacs @WWDC (assuming it means a new industrial design strike from apple with a next gen imac) before a full leopard launch. I predict that the next iMac design will probably be partly-necessitated by its OS (ie. some fancy technology that the OS can now handle and let you do on a new design / hardware type of thing.. hopefully not touchscreen but i dunno.. whatever). if the secret features of leopard are really crazy special and revolutionary and 'new' imac external designs, then we'd see new imacs coming along with leopard.. but otherwise it just has to be AFTER..

Ahh... nostalgic thoughts come to mind. Anybody remember early 90's Trident video cards with 256 kilobytes of video memory? It was user upgradeable to 512 kilobytes. Back then, video memory upgrades were actually beneficial, because they allowed bigger resolutios and/or ability to view more colours.

Today, it's only about few FPS more…

My prediction :
WWDC 2007
Iphone
Leopard
Macbook pro (LED display, Santa Rosa, no graphic card upgrade)

Special event in October
Leopard
New redesign imac

Special event before Christmas
Touch Screen Ipod Video
New Ipod Nano

Macworld 2008
New Macbook
Macbook Pro (Graphic card upgrade)

You're going to the UK?

So speaking of your buyer's guide, might I suggest a means to make the ratings a little more accurate?

I don't want to get into it here, but it involves more accurate statistical measures.

I mean just because one would be reaching an average release time doesn't mean it's significantly closer to an actual release... It also depends on the consistency of the release dates.

-Clive

Ever taken statistics? It's an average of all the time frames between releases. They take that and use it as a basic value to base when the next version may come out. They don't hold their statistics to any release dates in any way. Take it for what it is. It's a "Buyers Guide" to Apple products.

You're going to the UK?

Hah, no, India. But I lived in the UK last year. It isn't thaaaat bad (though yes, it's bad, but it's worse in India as far as I can tell).

So does anyone have thoughts on how long it will take for things to appear after the WWDC?
