Fingerprint scanner to unlock iPhone, really? What if my kids (6&10) want to use my phone and I'm not available to unlock it for them? No Siri either, give me a break. It will be included!

I have a nephew and niece approx those ages, now your kids are prob better behaved but given the way they handle my feature phone and the damage they did to my macbook, not a chance would I give them an iphone without my supervision anyway.

Anal - ysts

Here's something for the Analysts to read and then write up for their dumb old shareholders.

If Apple really does have two iPhones ready for release - and if one of them is going to be a cheaper plastic one - and if they then proceed to sell the cheaper one into the same markets as the current phone...

...I predict that the iPhone 5S will be a spectacular failure.

BTW - this new direction Apple is taking, in going after all the markets and making loads of different models to fit all the niches and price points is what almost sank the company the last time. The difference is, now there is nobody at the helm to tell them to stop it... unless... has anyone seen Scott?

Ah another Gene Munster prediction. The king of wrong predictions offers his um wisdom yet again. You know, for someone, who actually supposedly watches Apple, has inside connections and gets PAID to make them, I gotta give props to his bosses. His employer must be a real easy going mensch that doesn't care about job performance. I mean really, everyone on this board makes better predictions than Gene ever could. He must be married to his bosses daughter, or his boss...

Whatever analyst wrote this should be canned immediately. Siri will obviously run on every device for two reasons.

1. It's to Apple's benefit to have more people use Siri, thats how they improve it

2. It doesn't work that great and most people don't use it. So its not that great of a differentiator.

there will be enough difference to shift some people towards the 5S however I think it will cut into the sales big time because the screen size will be the same, the colours will be pretty, and most people don't care about anything other than that. Heck even the iphone 4 and 4S still make up a large number of sales overall and they are clearly inferior in terms of screen size (although imo are nicer looking)

No SIRI on future iOS devices would light the spotlight on Google, as they already have an app that provides similar functionality.

I don't think Apple would do something as stupid as that. I think what would set the differences would be:
- Processor (previous generation if it would really save Apple some money)
- Cameras (still two cameras, just lower resolution)
- External covers (not aluminum, just plastic-like finish in many colors)
- Display (non-retina)
- Just one capacity (most likely 16GB).
- No AirDrop support
- WiFi 802.11n only, not 802.11ac
- No Fingerprint reader
The goal apparently is to launch a lower cost device that someone would actually want to buy it. I would have to be competitive featurewise to a reasonable degree to make it worth buying it.

Non-retina - no one would buy the iPhone in 2013 with 3GS display  if you can get iPhone 4 for such low price now.

lol what a load of BS, it won't matter what it does or doesn't come with, if they don't increase the screen size I can't see Apple stopping the rise of Android..
I couldn't care less how thin it is..just give us a larger screen!

There's always one! Go buy an Android if you want a bigger screen because if Apple does do a bigger screen you have at least another year to wait for it and I don't know if I can stand reading comments about a bigger screen (especially on threads that have nothing to do with screen size) for that long.

Siri gone? Not happening... Apple is relying on Siri for "iOS in the Car" and isn't going to take it out of newer phones. The thing that makes Apple successful is consistency within its product lines.

As for the fingerprint sensor... Apple isn't going to include that without any additional purposes other than unlocking your iPhone. That is too gimmicky. Apple is also releasing iCloud Keychain with iOS7, sounds like the perfect time to include a fingerprint to access this feature. I see it being like the image I added below. This is one of the only names that doesn't work with Apple's "i" convention... I don't think "iFinger" would do too well. HAHA

So buy 1 of each for your kids. Problem solved.

I would gladly trade Siri for a cheaper iphone. I don't really use that feature anyways, what more with google now available on IOS.

I agree with you completely, which is why this 5C is something else entirely. Too many people would quite happily forgo Siri and a more fragile case and the 'S' designation to save a bit of cash, and the silliest thing is that Apple realises this. They wouldn't create a phone that costs less with a few not-very-interesting-to-many-people features ("hey, this fingerprint sensor cost me $300, how cool am I?!?!"), because as you say, you'd opt for the cheaper one, and that means 1 fewer sale of the more expensive phone, and Apple will never do anything to risk that happening.

This 5C isn't going to replace the 4/4S, it's something entirely different, like the iPod Shuffle is different from the iPod Classic. Think perhaps a stepping stone from the iPod Touch to the iPhone - something in between those two products, rather than something replacing existing products, is where I expect this 5C to sit.

I'm not sure which history you are looking at. According to Jobs, "At the critical juncture in the late '80s, when they should have gone for market share, they went for profits."

Different models hitting all the price points is what made the iPod dominant.

(And I have no idea why you would claim that Apple is going after niche markets.)

So the iPhone 5S will only have 3M shipments at launch because they can't mass produce a fingerprint scanner which will only be used to unlock the phone.

IDK about everyone else, but I'm pretty sure I'll be sticking with my 4S and wait for the 6 if Apple's idea of revolutionary enhancements is an all but useless fingerprint scanner. Don't get me wrong, a fingerprint scanner has the potential to be revolutionary, but only if it's capable of acting as some invisible security measure device wide, and possibly even use it for other devices, like your computer, car, credit card and house.

So they're going to intentionally and pointlessly cripple the 5C?

Great.

The Sculley years are back.

Didn't some boneheaded analyst just predict that Apple will collapse now that Steve Jobs is dead. He said that it happened before when Steve Jobs left the company the first time back in the 80s...and it will happen again now that he's dead.

First of all, it doesn't take a Genius to realize that Apple will never be the same company without Steve. HOWEVER...the first time Steve left, Apple was a fraction of the company it is now. That was before the iMac, iPod, iphone & ipad. Before Apple became the biggest company in the world.

Steve Job left a road map and a culture at Apple that will endure. The innovating isn't over. The company isn't going away. These analysts are just manipulative sleezeballs who are most likely shorting the stock.

Oh right, Siri.. That product service that nobody actually ever uses. Oh yeah and doesn't even work properly either. Yeah nobody wants that.

for what?

I use it all the time for sending messages, dictation, setting alarms/timers, making notes, searching the net, plotting routes etc

People see it as a gimmick but most of those tasks takes between 5 and 10 seconds using Siri, doing it manually would take 30 seconds to over a minute each.

There's zero possibility of Siri not being on any mobile device Apple makes going forward. ANALyst.

It wasn't an analyst. It was Oracle CEO Larry Ellison.
