This is completely fair.*

Steve Jobs chose to limit the iPhone to just one carrier.*

He's the one fanboys worship.*

He's the one that leads the company.*

He's the "Hype Master" and marketing genius.*

Therefore it's a very fair comparison. Facts are facts.

iPhones are sold on multiple carriers in multiple countries. Just look up north in Canada where it's sold on 3 of the 4 major carriers. Guess what those 3 major carriers all have in common? UMTS 850/1900. Guess the one "4th major carrier, WIND" has? 1700/2100 UMTS. That's why WIND doesn't get the iPhone.

Same thing across the Atlantic. All the major carriers support 2100 UMTS. That's why it's much easier to offer the iPhone to multiple carriers.

Wait for Verizon to go LTE, they will get the iPhone.

This just in, Windows 7 outsells OSX

Honestly I don't care what phone is the best selling all I care about is what phone is the best for me to use. For me I haven't found a single phone I like more than the iPhone, sure there are other nice phones and the iPhone is missing features that other phones may do well. As a total package though, the iPhone for me wins and who really cares beyond what you want?

My life isn't revolved around owning the most popular products, only the ones that I enjoy using or the ones that enable me to do things I couldn't without them.

well done android

Look at the end of the day, we all know that the iP4 is the best smartphone and iOS is the best smartphone platform.

Show me figures of a comparable Android smartphone outselling the iP4 and then we can talk.

And if you want to compare Android to iOS you need to include all iOS devices sold, i.e. iP4, 8GB iP 3GS, iPod Touch and iPads.;)

iPhone vs HTC Evo. iPhone has more sales

iPhone vs Droid X. iPhone has more sales

iPhone vs Droid 2. iPhone has more sales

iPhone vs Droid Incredible. iPhone has more sales

iPhone vs Samsung Galaxy S (Captivate). iPhone has more sales

iPhone vs Nexus One. iPhone has more sales

iPhone vs Dell Streak. iPhone has more sales

I could do this all day.

But lets group all of these phones together plus all of the less popular Android devices like the Motorola Backflip and call it a win.

I dont feel like researching this so I'll ask here: Does Android OS outsell all iOS devices combined...iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch?

Also, isn't this argument a little weird considering people are comparing a single device's sales numbers to that of a group of devices that use the same OS? Personally I don't care who outsells who, I just like my iPhone.

And iOS smartphones vs Android smartphones = Android more sales. This whole news story is about how Android based smartphones have now surpassed iOS based smartphones. Is that really so difficult to grasp?

Nope, Android OS doesn't outsell all iOS devices. And no, it's not a little weird that people are comparing a single device to a group of devices. People are comparing a single smartphone OS to another single smartphone OS. It just so happens that one of them is only available on a single device, but that is irrelevant in this instance.

It's not hard to grasp that comparing one phone to many is idiotic. Lets compare all of Honda's, Toyota's, and Kia's cars vs the sales of one vehicle, I wonder who would have more sales. If you make a logical comparison, comparing one phone to another, the iPhone wins every time. On the other hand if you want to compare iOS vs Android you need to include the sales of the iPad and iPod touch.

They use this comparison because Android sales would look embarrassing if you were to compare it device vs device.

So how would you display smartphone marketshare by OS then?

And no you can't include iPads and iPod Touches because they aren't smartphones.

So, one could say that iOS devices outsell Android devices?

iOS devices outsell Android devices, but Android smartphones outsell iOS smartphones. And when you're comparing the smartphone market, that's all that matters.

They use this comparison because the article is about the smartphone market, not the smartphone, tablet and MP3 player market.

The point is, iPhone 4 is the best selling smartphone device in the world and the only way to "kill" it is to compare an entire Android OS against it. If you want to look at it that way, more power to you. I chose to look at it device vs device. I'll be impressed with Android when they come out with a single device that beats the iPhone in sales.

So you are saying that since they have more sales, Android is better (i.e. is there a point to the original post besides trolling) ?

Seriously, this is as bad as the old PC vs Mac arguments. Do people really feel so insecure about their choice of mobile OSs ? Use the one that you like and stop worrying about what others use.

Your absolutely right if you want to look at it like that. What I want is the best smartphone. Unfortunately I can't own all the android phones and somehow put them all together and be happy.

What I can do, like any other logical human being in a real world setting, is compare 1 phone to another phone. I don't care about anyones market share.

That's fine, you're entitled to your opinion. But the market doesn't look at it that way; the market looks at smartphone OS marketshare, not each individual device.

Not at all, but Android is obviously proving to be more popular. That's certainly a conclusion we can draw from this.

Exactly! And I don't see why so many people are trying to minimise Android's gains by saying the comparison should either be against all iOS devices, or only 1 Android device. It seems that people just want to manipulate the figures to make out that the iPhone has the largest number.

What I can do, like any other logical human being in a real world setting, is compare 1 phone to another phone. I don't care about anyones market share.

If you don't care about market share, why are you taking part in a discussion about... market share? If you want to compare the iPhone to just a single Android device, by all means, start a new thread and do so. But this thread is about market share.

Why are you on an iPhone forum when you're clearly bias towards Android? Go talk about your mark share victory on the Android forums. Here, you have the coolest and most popular phone because your market share is bigger. Happy?

Only in an Apple forum do fanboys take things so seriously, get so bent out of shape, and hurl the word troll around.

It's only a news item folks... :)
