If Apple enabled sliding either left or right, the flow through glow in 'slide to unlock' would slip back and forth like a Cylon from Battlestar Galactica.

That's it! There is NO other solution! No other opinions are necessary, thank you. :)

I'm still not understanding what the issue is with the arrow. It's a tiny little carrot. What's the issue?

Not sure, but I think he means that the area which is occupied by the arrow+text (see it as a block) is not centered. The text is centered, but adding the arrow makes it out-of-center to the left.

Wouldn't have noticed. Maybe it's even worth a little tweak.

Um.....tutorials are completely anti-HIG (Apple human interface guidelines).

So, they doesn`t always follow it.

This message appears after fresh iOS install (just once) when user trying to reach Spotlight like it was in iOS6 (swipe left from home screen). They can add such "mini-tutorial" to lock screen too.

People were always happy with what they had then no product would ever advance. Critiquing everything will only lead to a better all around product.

I understand that. What I meant was that Apple will never please everyone.

Slightly different to what you are asking for. The slide to unlock hasn't changed. Spotlight is no longer accessed by swiping to the left, its some where completely different.

Make it red and that would be seriously cool.

I think, though, that if they really did enable two-way unlocking, they could simply display the text with arrows

< slide to unlock >

and not have any flow-through animation at all.

Or they could ditch the arrows and have the animation start in the middle and go to either end.

I thought about that, but then we'd have a whole bunch of people trying to unlock it by using two fingers, starting in the middle and swiping opposite directions.

I'd call that a reverse-pinch gesture, but you're probably right!

Tasks should be self-explanatory. If you need a tutorial to do something, it's probably too complex.

I agree with the OP. I consider an arrow a tutorial (or guidance). In iOS 6 it looked like a sliding button and people slid it. Now they have to be told with a greater than symbol.

I'd say based on feedback Apple added the arrow because people were confused on how to unlock the screen (and the Command Center is no longer an up arrow). If there was no criticism then Apple would rightfully believe it's good to go.

I agree with OP, that arrow is so annoying, and I say pointless now, since the arrow for Control Center it's now a rectangle, how hard can it be to figure out that you have to swipe from left to right?

Also, I don't see the need for the "arrows" now "little rectangle tabs" for Notification Center and Control Center on the lock screen, while on the home screen there's nothing that tells you can swipe for NC or CC, but you know you can, for me it takes away the cleaner look for the lock screen.

I think the arrow's not the problem but the asymmetry... And the fact that they removed the arrows for NC and CC. I think that will be more confusing for people than the actual swiping 'issue'.

If I didn't know anything about iOS 7 I would tap them instead of swiping up and down.

Before: "It's not obvious how to unlock the phone! I handed my friend my phone with iOS 7 on it and he kept sliding up to unlock!"

After: "This new arrow is annoying."

There is just no pleasing some people.

The arrow is good - take into consideration some people have never used an iOS device - so unlocking it would be completely new to them and this a small arrow helps.

Sure for those of us who have used Apple's devices for a long time, know the drill.

But if you're narrow minded like that and think everyone has used an iPhone before.. well than I feel sorry for that person.

I think this is an exception to that case. We were all used to swiping right from the home screen to access spotlight.

When I first picked up the iOS beta 1 - I had no idea how to search - I thought they had removed it!

However, since this feature has moved - it's nice to tell users where it has moved to.

One could argue that it's not obvious to slide down from the middle of any screen access it - and I tend to agree - however a quick note about it is more than enough. A silly animation would have been more annoying.

5 pages about a silly arrow and not a single "In Mother Russia....." joke.?? Lol.

Back to the arrow. Doesn't the "slide to unlock" glow from left to right? To me that's enough subliminal suggestion for how to unlock it. Especially since they've removed the chevrons at the top and bottom.

So be the first one =)

Exactly. If user can`t unlock his/her iPhone without that arrow, maybe he/she shouldn`t use a touchscreen smartphone at all? I bet that in the next beta this arrow will be removed or changed. Otherwise Ive will dissapoint me a bit.

personally, i think the whole arrow argument is stupid.

anyone, if not almost everyone, who has held or played with an apple device, knows to swipe left to right. this whole "it is confusing" thing is kinda nitpicking. it takes one wrong swipe from someone new to realize right to left doesnt work and to reverse. i think the OS looks fine with the one arrow.
