Then, with all due respect, you are a fool. My 2008 MBP is a fantastic machine and I'm sure the new ones will be even better. I have to deal with Windows every day because I support other people at work and home. I totally switched when I got my MBP and I would NEVER go back. It's by far the best all around laptop I've ever owned, and I've owned a lot of them.

Put a SSD in that puppy, and it will revolutionize your life. I have the same MBP with a 128GB Crucial RealSSD C300 and I use mine as my main PC very day running Windows and OS X and it flies!

I agree. With a 08 MBP myself, dual booted with Win 7 and OS X it runs great. Just need a 500gb HDD upgrade and I'll be set for years to come. Awesome machines built to outlast multiple refreshes, upgrades, and years of awesome use.

I may have 5k apple, but I didn't get making the big bucks through being taken advantage of... trick someone else into buying

"Yesterdays technology, for tomorrows price."

Yea, Dell's product updates and timing are so much clearer and better publicized.

(and feel free to substitute any PC maker for "Dell")

Two form factors

Although Steve Jobs mentioned that the current iPad form factor was ideal, albeit in his eyes, it's possible that Apple will release a second form factor to the iPad. There are some folks, myself included, that would appreciate a 7" iPad as opposed to the 10" screen.

There is already a family of iPods:

  1. Shuffle
  2. Nano
  3. Classic
  4. Touch

The invitation for March 2 seems to indicate a focus on the iPad, and that 2011 will be the year of the iPad. In the last few years, Apple has striven to minimize weight along its product lines and it seems logical that this trend should continue in the iPad. It's improbable that Apple would market a second iteration of a product to be heavier than a predecessor, thus making it a sound belief that the iPad will only "lose weight" in the future.

It seems likely to me that along with an update to the current iPad, Apple will introduce a second form factor to the iPad. Some people argue that Apple will not update the current form factor either in processor, screen resolution, I/O ports, memory, etc only to alienate buyers of the "early 2011" revision a few months. Although not specifically recanting or withdrawing previous statements, Steve Jobs has probably concluded that although a smaller form factor was not lucrative at a previous date, that the smaller factor makes sense now. All exercise and physical strengths matters aside, the iPad can be made lighter. People who have clamored for improved screen resolution may have indirectly dictated that although a 10" Retina-like display may be economically difficult to achieve, a smaller form factor with Retina-like resolution may be less economically impacting profit margins, while offering consumers a path that fulfills the wants of Retina-like advocates.

Apple will not release two iPads within 6 months of each other

I just have a hard time believing we'll see a minor upgrade to the iPad now and a full upgrade in September. There isn't any precedent that I can remember for that happening. Apple is happy with the annual release cycle for iOS devices. Why change now?

If we don't see the retina display now, we won't see it until Spring 2012. I'm hoping however this will be the retina display. If you notice the wallpaper on the iPad in the invitation...it's the same as the iPhone 4 wallpaper...maybe that's a hint.

BTW, the mockup looks horrible. No way this is the new version.

why would you wait since 2009 when they updated the look at the end of 08? stupid move on your part.

Well, It was around late 2009... and I read macrumors. so I thought hm, maybe 2010, then maybe 2011. but seriously 2010 sucked, that was one of the biggest let downs for me. but oh well, im still waiting.

I think rumours like this are actually distracting and not to Apple's or us (the consumers) favour.

I don't have an ipad yet, so what would my incentive be to buy a 1.5 version in June (Australia-based) only to see that superseded after 6 months?

If I had an iPad 1 already, there is no motivation for me to consider buying the same unit (screen, processor) after 12 or less months.

I can't help feeling that over the past few days MacRumors have lost their original aim: to provide us with interesting and semi-credible stories. Looking at the number of negative responses on recent iPad and MacBook Pro articles, I would hate to see consumers losing faith in Apple and their very capable and credible product strategies based on snippets of guesswork.

Damn it. I really needed a new Macbook and was so pumped to upgrade to a MBP but whats the point if its going to be obsolete in a year?

Damn you apple! Damn you!

I Doubt it

I very much doubt that Apple would release an update to a product so quickly as this article suggests. If people think Apples upgrade cycle is just a few months they wouldn't have the confidence to buy the current product and if they did they would vey quickly find themselves resenting their purchases. Apple, I believe has a bit to much nous to shoot themselves in the foot like this, dare I say Osbourne 2. I hope that I'm right.

What is my signature?

Hmmm i'm torn, should i stick it out for a redesign or should i buy a tried and tested model right now.

Huh? Do you think ANY tech you buy today isn't going to be obsolete in a year? Or at least a upgrade available? Be real.

Oh... by the way... these are all just RUMORS... as in, not for sure... maybe might happen according to someone who might know someone's neighbor that might know.

First: OMG totally redesigned MBP within days!!1!!

Then: Some details leak, no new design

A few minutes later: OMG next year will bring totally new design!!!11! Because you know, there will be new MBs next year … and eventually we have to be right …

+1

I was a little bummed after reading the title ... even though the likelihood of a redesign was low I was still hoping it might happen. But seriously these machines should be awesome non the less... sadly I forget to appreciate how nice a spec bump is compared to a redesign. It seems like most people on here would buy a macbook with no spec bump if they only changed the color to a darker/stronger liquid metal. Which I want too... but I would greatly prefer a spec bump over a redesign ... seriously what other company makes a laptop that looks half as good as the current unibodies?

Just read the bold parts. Those are my thoughts.

All this speculation and no one can say for sure. I'm sure apple won't release 2 iPads in one year. It just doesn't make sense.

+1 Exactly. Isn't the Apple way.

Yea, Dell's product updates and timing are so much clearer and better publicized.

Yep... <---Sarcasm

It's fair to be a little disappointed. I am. But honestly, if you need a quality laptop that you can depend on, get the MBP. You may not like the redesign. And even if you do, sell you MBP for 200-300 less and buy it. Not a big deal. :D

Why is it news that MacBooks will be updated in 2012? Here's a headliner, thery'e going to have big updates in 2013 too, so don't buy that 2012 update either - you read it here first. Maybe MR will even feature this news along with the next ten breaking stories sure to be posted before the night is over

It's a year out. What manufacturer DOESN'T update their laptops annually? So they update the laptops again in March of 2012 (if that early in the year), you don't say. Everyone realizes we are currently in the second month of 2011, right?

Am confused?

I was really looking forward to move over from my PC to my first Mac. I was very excited following all the rumors trickling out.

But there seems to be a touch of negativity in this thread. So am confused. Would this be a good enough upgrade to get? Or should I wait till 2012..

Isn't the product in September going to be a 7" iPod Touch with a retina display? Not an iPad. I don't see apple releasing another iPad in 6 months. September is iPod's month.

7" iPod Touch $350/400/450 would fill out the low end. Maybe they can drop the price on the touches a little to compete with kindle (6" screen).

or better yet how about two models of the iPhone 3.5" + 5" and have two iPod touch model at 5" + 7"? And the iPad at ± 10"?

if you want a new machine right now, just get it when the 2011 update happens. Im in the same spot as you and I figure that there is always going to be a new rumor about a new macbook coming out, so just get one now.
Thats what Im going to do

you are new here. The negativity that you see is a perpetual thing on macrumors for apple updates. If you waited to switch until everybody was brimming with love and positivity for a mbp update you would never get a mac. People are always wanting more specs. People don't like hearing rumors about what will be released next, but if you think about it there will ALWAYS be a next product, even if there are no rumors about it. There is no better time to buy a product than at its refresh. So I say buy the new mbp and be happy! :)

No sense waiting around for more than a year because Apple might do this or that

All of this is a bit disturbing, as "the machine" seems to have lost its momentum.
