I'm afraid you're right :(

I think also fear of failing has crept into their designs, i.e., playing it safe
Oh, no, Apple is the type of company that has to have a few spectacular failures in order to succeed. Even those failures can be the path to success (e.g. Lisa and Mac).

Tim Cook, are you listening? I hope this assertion isn't true!!! Playing it safe is the one sure way for Apple to fail in the long term. Sure way.

iPads need wider screens... They absolutely suck for watching movies or other video content thats shot in 16:9 aspect ratio. Your 9.7" screen becomes like 7" because all you see is black bars...
There are many films and TV shows that are NOT shot in 16:9. Some new ones are WIDER than that. So you'll always end up with a letterbox or pillarbox.

If the only thing that you do on a tablet is watch 16:9 videos then a 16:9 Android tablet would be a better fit for you... and less expensive as well.

For tablet use, 16:9 is a terrible aspect ratio. Too tall in portrait mode, too wide in landscape. They onscreen keyboard in landscape takes up 1/2 the screen space. In portrait mode, the keyboard is too narrow to do anything more than thumb typing.

Apple got the AR perfect with the iPad. Microsoft's shifting from a widescreen AR to the 3:2 of the current Surface 3 and Surface Pro 3 acknowledge the superiority of the iPad's AR. Samsung has come around to that conclusion as well with their latest tablets.

I have often thought this about my iPad Air 2 a well. Since it has 2GB RAM, it probably can be hacked to run OS X.
OK, can you please explain which of you is planning to port the kernel over to an entirely different (processor) architecture? Apple could do it (and perhaps is doing it, based on some speculation about the iPad Pro), but it's not a trivial task. Don't you remember the PowerPC transition, and then the transition to Intel x86?

I think Apple would be better off putting an Intel processor in the iPad Pro, rather than porting OS X to the A7/A8 and later. But since they're in the unique position of controlling both the hardware and the software, it's really their call.

Still, iOS 9 is the next clear upgrade for the existing iPad line. I can't see them making such a move without introducing new hardware that's designed for the change.

In its current guise, OS X would have a very hard time running on a 2GB iPad Air 2. I can't imagine them porting it over for existing hardware.

Apple, run out of ideas of newer iPad's ? Not possible....

If OS X was to run on as a port on iOS nativly, the first thing they'll need to do is update their truth of "iOS is secure." because it won't be if OS X runs on it.

It will be infected by the same malware that currently targets OS X. I would like to see the control system for think by your finger... it would be just like playing one of those claw-machines..

Move pointer Up, Down, Left.. Rotate 360 degrees.

In the face of six successive quarters of declining sales, it's just as well that Apple have seen fit to skip upgrading their flagship iPad.

What could make more sense?

That helps with decling sales how?

With sales plunging on the iPad, what could apple do, other then making it thinner of course to turn the sales around. I don't see any feature that it can add which would cause people to replace their iPad air 2 tablets.

Apple can always use the same ideas they apply to their phones.

I think most people who wanted an iPad have one. Obviously those who wanted to upgrade to air 2 did so. With no update for another year iPad sales will further decline.

This one is easy. Ther's no market for a tablet whose browser CRASHES EVERY 5 BLOODY MINUTES

Power cycle. That mean hold both buttons home and turn off until the iPad reboots. Your issue should be solved.

The Air 2 is a more than capable device as is, no 'needed' upgrades, especially incremental ones just to try to boost sales. The next logical evolution would be a more powerful device with a larger screen and more connectivity, i.e., an iOS 9/A9+/USB C 12" Pro.

I personally think that Apple should now focus on the software. With iOS 9 they make a huge step to take advantage of the big canvas of the iPads. But they could go a step further. And I hope to see more of this before (or along with) the release of the iPad Pro or any newer regular iPad.

This is the thing. At WWDC we see new Mac software, and new iOS software. But the iOS software normally focuses on the phone. So while we get new Mac, phone and iPad hardware, we never seem to get new iPad software.

This used to be different when they'd show new apps and iPad only iOS features at the iPad event, but that hasn't happened in the last few years... Until iOS 9 that is.

I've been loving my Air 2 ever since I got it last December, and have been using the rocks out of it for school and work. I'm using it right now in fact! I think it's the best tablet money can buy and recommend anyone get it. Those of you sill using 1st, 2nd or 3rd gens, the Air 2 is so worth it. The design is insanely thin, and feels amazing in your hands for reading and viewing content. (I should also add that the hardware/software is super fluid and really flies).

However, I actually am excited to see what comes next. I think they've finally clinched the best design and feel for the mainline iPad. So I'm anticipating an Air 3 (and even considering selling my Air 2 to upgrade) and hope this rumor is false.

What if the Air 3 doesn't require any external changes over the Air 2? What if an active digitizer (or a standardizing of bluetooth stylus APIs), added bluetooth profiles for mice and other pointing devices were to be included/exclusive to an iPad Air 3 that was physically identical to the Air 2?

And another shows Best Buy clearing out iPad Air 2. Which one do you believe, a rumor from China or a Retailer who puts their money where their mouth is.

The bonus here is that I can feel good about my iPad Air 2, its age and hopefully about it not being coded into extension as fast. I use it daily but don't need/want to buy another for quite some time unless its for someone else.

I still use my Retina "New iPad" (aka iPad 3), other than that one time someone wanted to air drop something to me and I noticed it didn't have it, it's still serving the purpose I bought it for.

I would be seriously disappointed if a new model was "slimmed down" because unless they've found a way to make it indestructible and unbendable, the version I have "barely" survived falling to the floor from a height of 3'.

The screen is perfect condition, but the corner that met the floor has dog-eared the metal frame, which means there's stress being placed on the screen from that corner.

Currently the next iPhone is on my shopping list. The iPad is fine for now.

And even that might be changing, and that is scary for Apple.

I've not seen any news about that? What have you heard?

Most people still seem to upgrade every 2 years and there are those contracts like O2 Refesh which give you a new phone every year.

Steve Jons died and took all innovation with him.  has introduced nothing successful since he died.  Watch was not a massive hit like when the iPhone launched etc.

A headline early next year that read 'Apple Watch sales fell dramatically in second half of 2015, while iPhone still accounts for 70% of Apples revenue' would cause stock to fall, naysayers wanting Tim cooks head on a plate, etc.

Yet if you replace Apple Watch with Mac, replace 2015 with 1984 and replace iPhone with Apple II, and you have an accurate take on how things were when the Mac was new.

Something new and revolutionary is definitely needed in the iPad. Incremental updates aren't even worth it.
What exactly, a tablet is primarily used to view content.. So a thin light screen is so that is required.. They ain't desktops or laptops.. Never will be.. Enjoy what they do instead of fretting about what they can't do..

I believe Apple will drop the "Air" in iPad. They should, and then keep the naming scheme to:

iPad (5th Generation)
iPad Mini (4th Generation)
iPad Pro

Who cares about the "Air" name, simplicity is the best. Besides, all the tablets are thin anyways.

I guess to not confuse people, they can add the nth generation label like what Intel is doing to the Intel Core Series.

Uh, you certainly didn't understand at all what I meant. I was just saying that incremental updates to the iPad aren't necessarily worth it to a person with a capable iPad. Even people with iPad 2 still don't see a need to upgrade to iPad Air 2. The updates are too incremental to cause excitement. That's just one of the reasons iPad sales are becoming stagnant.

I upgraded from an iPad 2 to an iPad Air 2, and the difference was night and day.
