I have an iPhone 4, and the signal attenuation has never affected my usage or call quality in my daily usage. (which is what the few of us who actually OWN an iPhone 4 have seen saying all along).

Similarly, I doubt owners of the devices Apple pointed out see an issue that affects them either.

A non-issue (in practical/daily usage) is a non-issue regardless of who is having it.

Now it's just a corporate PR battle of who deals with public criticism better.

Distortion fields

Steves distortion of other phone performance was/is no more distorted than the claims made against Apple. The competition thinks that only Apple should have distorted facts levied agains them.

Nokia,RIM et al...

are all 100% correct.

this is an Apple issue, no one else's

dragging other companies in is just pathetic, but typically Apple.

No this is a Fanboy issue, most people do not care, they understand it has its issues and because it still does 95% of what they want they move on.

Apple issue now is the fanatical fanboys.

The commercial lawyer at the lawfirm I work at has a theory.

America lacks sufficient government market control (or wont act on it), so companies use the system which they know they can get a result - suing.

Of course, it falls flat on its face when you consider that average american citizens are sue happy too.

the Lawyer at your firm don't know jack....without lawsuits we'd still be having pistol duels at dawn...if you're not an American and the Attorneys you work with don't practice in the states what do they really know? and suits occur all over the world..we just have enough freedom to initiate law suits whenever we want in the US no matter how frivolous they may be

The issue is coming from the fanatical fanboys. I think Steve even pointed it out without saying fanatical fanboy but that who is going crazy. People who own them seem to either not care, no big deal or "bring it back" like the song said. I guess Apple has Trolls to worry about now haha.

Fixed. The minority makes the most noise and the media loves a juicy story. If you notice looking through the forum, unless someone makes a new thread or one of the usual suspects bumps a thread, this issues dies down on its own. It’ll be interesting to see what their spin will be in a few days (July 24), when still there are not long lines returning the phone.

Amen to the lawyers, what would we be like without them. Its lawyers that give us a chance to be compensated, just look at China what do lawyers there do?

That was the funniest video i've seen in a long time. Does anyone know if it's been translated or subtitled in English?

Its funnier that we don't understand it, and we just add our own context to it. :D

His theory wasn't about getting rid of/lack of suits or questioning your right to sue whoever he hell you want.

"How can RIM explain why when I hold their phone it drops in bars? "

He drops it when he holds it in bars. That's why he needs to drink less. He can then hold on to it. It was a super funny joke. I demand tons of laughter and attention, not information and complaining.

Hahaha... it was way too early when I read that post.

HAHAHAHAHA....LMAO @ the dramatized video of Apple from Taiwanese. LOL.

It must be made by an ex-employee of Foxconn from Taiwan. It's awesome as hell.

That video should be video of the years. :D

It portray Steve beating Bill Gate into this evil new Dark Vader is genius!! Love the way he used the lightsaber to cut off the guy's two figers to hold the phone properly. LOL. hahahaha. that was a crude joke, but entertaining. I also loved presenting Apple = all other smartphones. lol

Whereas Apple claimed over 0.55 percent of customers called AppleCare with reception-related complaints, HTC's Eric Lin told Pocket-lint the Droid Eris technical support rate was 0.016 percent

Actually, Apple said that only .55% of iPhone 4 customers called AppleCare. HTC doesn't make any claim that their 0.016% rate is *just* of Eris owners. How many phones does HTC make?

But, I really don't care about these other phones. I don't own any of them. I have an iPhone 4 and want it to work just as well as (and even better!) than my previous iPhone 3G. Jobs pointing out other phone problems was really catty. It's akin to being pulled over by a cop for speeding and trying to get out of it by saying "but officer, everyone else was speeding too!".

LOL, I'll bet you would say that, who wouldn't? Get real man, nobody wants to take the blow for everyone else's mistakes and if you think you'd take one for the team while everyone else is speeding you're delusional.

If you were the CEO of Apple you would do the exact same thing as Steve Jobs did, because it makes sense. It's not like he just got up on stage and made blanket statements that other phone's have the same antenna issues as the iPhone 4, he actually showed videos of the signal attenuation. Does that bother you that he was able to back up his claim? That must be it.
Apple backed up their claims with proof and some of the haters here like you just can't stand it! :p

... droid on verizon, ... show the same signal amount in the same spots as my iP4, but call quality gets really garbled by touching different areas of the handsets or moving to weaker signal areas. In fact, CALL QUALITY drops off drastically when signal strength drops. This behavior DOES NOT happen on my iP4. I go from clear call at any signal strength to drop call when there is NO bars.

Do you have any documentation of this problem with the Moto Droid on Verizon? That would go a long way to make our case. So far I've been unable to find any evidence of signal loss to the point of unusability (dropped calls, or even totally garbled signal). If you have it, please post. Right now that phone puts a big hole in the argument that all phones have the issue like the iP4.

I read that, I think it's garbage. No lawsuit doesn't mean Nokia agree with what Apple stated. End of story.

It's a troll indeed, it's pure flamebait, but it's true. iPhone 4 requires 1 finger, the tip only actually, pressed at a precise spot very lightly. Other phones require cupping.

Yeah. Cupping. Just like how a lot of people *hold their phones*. It's exactly the same issue, except that a case (or bumper) doesn't fix it.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

I've seen the video of the press conference it didn't seem like apple was pointing any fingers. The others are just being a bit defensive which is understandable they want more customers.

I'm tired of all this this Apple's 4th phone! The others have been doing this for decades! Apple made a mistake and they apologised for it and offered full refunds for those not happy.

Those who don't own an iPhone and don't intend to buy one should stop complaining

That's the thing, they *didn't* apologize. Apple tried to deflect the problem of their crappy phone design by attempting to drag their competitors down into the mud with them. Pathetic. Free bumpers for everyone instead of fixing the problem? Pathetic. Steve Jobs proclaiming the iPhone 4 as the greatest samrtphone ever, at a press conference whose sole purpose is to defend the iPhone 4's crappy design and his arrogant response to people's complaints? Pathetic.

The unfortunate thing is that with the droid, the big issue is with uninteligble garbled transmission (and reception) in poor / low signal areas. This is one thing that can't be demonstrated over the web.

"significant customer feedback"....

Interesting wording from Samsung & HTC... They hadn't received significant feedback... Well, based on the data neither has Apple. The media/bloggers are the ones making the fuss. I wonder how Samsung/HTC feedback rates compare to Apple's.

The bumpers weren't the best idea, but the perspective that people are taking of Apple being nonchalant and flippant about the issue offbeat.

It's all about dollars & PR! RIM, Nokia HTC don't want to give away FREE covers TOO!

I have to agree that Apple isn't really pointing the finger at any of the other companies, but rather stating, the antenna issue is relative amongst other smartphones. This will now give the providers such as AT&T, Verizon a scapegoat pertaining to their lack there of signal. I can see it now.. It's not our network, it's your phone! As stated in an earlier post, RIM, NOKIA, HTC have NOT said Jobs is wrong. If so, they would sue for sure.

Unfortunately for RIM, Nokia & others that were OUTED, are NOT going to DIG into their PROFIT shares to give away cases/covers. Since Apple is doing so, it will be expected for other companies to do so as well. Free = less profits! Since Apple's PR slogan is "We care about our users!" ... we are going to give you a free case. If the other companies with similar signal and antenna issues don't hop on the band wagon, they will be looked upon as they DON"T care about their users! It's all about perception folks!

I have an iPhone 3GS, and if I grip the phone, it also loses signal. I also have a 2 yr old LG shine, and i lose 4 bars when covering the bottom of the phone.

As Apple has stated, X marks the spot. if there was no line there, as in the case with the 3GS, the issue wouldn't have been so overly blown out of proportion.

Guys, hit refresh once in a while and read the entire thread :

Er... Yes, people read your post... But they disagree.

And a lot of companies would disagree. A competitor making public and knowingly untrue statements that your product is faulty is *very* good grounds to sue. And there is a pretty large amount of money involved.

If Nokia really didn't have similar reception problems with some of their phones, they'd sure as hell sue Jobs for defamation. But of course, they do. As I've mentioned on other threads, they put out the N71 which had pretty much identical problems. There was no recall, no free cases, no open return policy... They just kept quiet, and kept selling them, because no one expected better from a mobile phone company.

To sum up, you really don't know as much about business law practice, or mobile phone companies, as you're trying to put across.

Steve Jobs DISTORTED the context. The is an apple issue. Tell me what other cell phone drops signal as much as the iphone 4 just by touching a point on the phone with a finger tip? I've NEVER seen another cell phone do that.

Before you make yourself look silly for not checking first, see these videos. I just love when people make statements like you. :p http://www.apple.com/antenna/

I'm with RIM and Noikia on this one, it was a cheap shot to drag them in and neither company has signal problems like the iPhone. iPhones have always been a bit lacking in the actual phone department. What would have been interesting would be comparing the number of dropped calls between the iPhone 4 and these phones, rather than the 3GS.

I think Steve may have just started another media round that he could have avoided.

Apple didn't started this, Apple is just defending itself. Apple is not attacking other manufacter but just saying it is normal and it is. iPhone have better reception than 3GS which is the best selling smartphone. All smartphones and especially iPhones has not perfect reception but this antennagate is crap.

Seriously, this is still in the news?

Seriously people, there are more important issues in this world. You all have options. The choices are simple, Buy an iPhone if you want one, or don't. Plain and simple. The media has blown this out of proportion, but for whatever reason, this has become more important to people than lets say, our growing deficit. It would sure be nice to see this much attention and for some, outrage about what's real in this world. Fanboys and Hater's UNITE!!!

In that case they are breaching FCC regulations.

Not necessarily. It's just that if they don't want to put their antenna as far a physically possible from the user's head, they've got to use a lower-powered transmitter, which translates to a phone which more easily gets drowned out by the local noise level in its band(s).

The video is clever, and pretty funny. The acting is fair, overall it's pretty good (better than most of M. Night Shyamalan's work lately.).

I agree with others who said it may be funnier just because I can't understand what is being said.
