I have an American BB Bold 9700, Spain Nokia E72, and another UK BB Bold 9700 (yes, I have 3 phones, 3 Sims, all in my pocket cus I move around the 3 countries a lot).

Just tried to hold them like in the video.... Absolutely nothing happened.
I haven't tried the iPhone tho.

Still, I think it's pretty pathetic to make those claims about other companies.

There are many who have no problems with iphone either.

Nokia,RIM et al...

are all 100% correct.

this is an Apple issue, no one else's

dragging other companies in is just pathetic, but typically Apple.

And typical negative Mac rumors forum member response. Had this been Nokia Rumors and Nokia used Apple's iPhone to prove that Nokia wasn't the only one with this design problem the Nokia fans would be cheering Nokia for what they did.
I have no idea why this website is called Mac Rumors, it should be called "For all those who hate Apple".

yep. it's pathetic.

Moto Droids missing?

Can we all just get free bumpers :D

Moto Droid and Droid X are conspicuously absent. I've looked online as well and can't find any evidence of dropped call antenna problems with either of them. If someone would supply links showing this problem with those phones as well, it would substantially strengthen the argument that all phones have the problem. If not, they blow a hole in our argument that all phones suffer this issue.

Lawsuit happy americans are funny. Sometimes, there's no need to sue. Looking back in disgust is a proper answer. Why waste money on lawyers for something that is obviously bogus ?

Nokia is from Finland, RIM is from Canada. Neither country have a lawsuit prone culture.

Your conclusions are thus wrong that no lawsuit = Apple didn't distort the truth.

And yet both of them operate in the US and know how the game is played. Nokia IS in the middle of several lawsuits with Apple, some as the plaintiff, some as the defendant, the string of which was begun by Nokia.

Reading both of those statements shows that niether manufacturer is denying the evidence that Apple put forward or that the same issue can can be seen with the handsets shown in the Apple's video. They are, in effect, agreeing with Apple.

Simple fact, if Apple claimed that the issue effected all smartphones and specifically mentioned three big competitors but were, in fact, not telling the truth, they would be recieveing letters from Lawyers demanding a retraction. Clearly they were not telling lies. RIM's reaction is shamefull in its twisted wording.

THIS!!!!

None of those are the death grip. The death grip is wrongly named. It should have been death touch.

Its the DEATH TOUCH now everybody, not too dramatic, the DEATH TOUCH!
If you sneak up unsuspecting on your poor little iPhone and before its got a chance, you can kill it with your 'death touch' ...

next up, the death glance! One look at your phone and it will DIE....

All this expertise, of course, coming from someone who has yet to actually use one....

Do you really not have other things to do but rail on Apple all day, or is that your job? Are you being paid to do this?

If everyone was taking a balanced view on this subject their would only need to be about 4 or 5 posts.

1 - Apple defends issue and says it's something that happens to most phones under certain circumstances.
2 - I agree. Apple are correct. Those demonstrations we're of real phones dropping bars.
3 - I don't agree. I believe this is a big problem. Apple's phone is worse.
4 - Well that's fine then. We don't have to agree.
5 - Yes. That's true. I fancy a coffee. Anyone want one?

Forum discussions would be pretty dull though.

This is a tired issue and, in the end, comes down to who you believe. Jobs made certain statements that I believe are true. Those who talk about the RDF and Cult of Mac don't believe anything that Apple or Jobs says so there's little point discussing the issue with them. It'd be like having a court case where all the lawyer ever did was repeat 'You're such a liar! Stop it! I'm telling!!' rather than actually presenting a case.

Are you in a low signal area or are you at -60 dBs to started and with -30 attenuation you wouldn't see a change?

All phones have the attenuation issue, bridged antennae or not, the stats from consumer reports and anandtech show an average drop of 24 dBs when you grip the iPhone 4 tightly. Presumably if you're cupping it tightly, you'd be bridging the antennae.
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/06/30/wireless_experts_weigh_in_on_iphone_4_reception_issues.html

24 dBs is a lot if you're in a poor signal area, but it really won't affect someone who has a good signal in the first place. Most of the AT&T network is pretty horrible though. I'm not worried in Canada, as with my iPhone 3GS I have about -60 to -70 signal everywhere I go daily. At most I'll drop to -95, which is still about 4 out of 5 bars.

If you want to use the iPhone 4 without a case, consider where you want to use it. If the signal of your provider in your area is crap then consider a case. They're free now.

PS. Apple is right to bring up that all phones show signal degradation. Many people think that the iPhone 4 just doesn't work when you touch it, but really it is just losing some of its signal, like all phones do when you hold them a certain way. The iPhone 4's external antennae may have been an incorrect design because it exposes it to a PR scandal but the phone still works in most situations.

I didn't know is was a breach of FCC regulations to fit the antennae inside the phone case. ;)

The business end of the antenna is in the bottom left inside the phone, same place as all new phones, where FCC regs mandate (furthest from the brain, apparently).

It's an idiotic reg, based on woo science, but there you have it. That's why all of those phones suffer degradation in weak signal areas when held at the bottom.

Bridging is a separate and trivial issue that anyone with hands bigger than a child can avoid (I've held my phones in a "talon" grip since one got knocked flying years ago, so don't go anywhere near the bridge - or rather won't once I have may own rather than being reduced to fondling display units in the O2 shop. And yes, testing the grip was part of my decision making).

(And yes, I did see your smiley)

I think it was a great move - showed that the 'death grip' isn't an isolated problem.

It's not but particular note should be that he said the test were completed in areas with poor reception. How poor was this reception? Why did we not see the iPhone 4's performance in this same test? Fair is fair and if Apple are going to compare then show all the phones being discussed... including the iPhone 4.

RIM are absolutely right, after all the posturing from Apple of how advanced their technology is they should stick to sorting their own problems rather than attempting to spin this as 'All smartphones have weak spots'.. by the way how many times times was that phrase mentioned...??? Stinks of absolute arrogance.

Teh Haterz: "LOL! Stupid Crapple, makes a phone you can't hold any way you like without losing signal. Steve Jobs sucks!"

Rational Observer: "But look, your BlackBerry does the same thing."

Teh Haterz: "I don't hold it that way."

I think using my left hand and cutting off my thumb is easier than using my right and cutting off my pinky + ring finger. Less blood.

But, I really don't care about these other phones. I don't own any of them. I have an iPhone 4 and want it to work just as well as (and even better!) than my previous iPhone 3G. Jobs pointing out other phone problems was really catty. It's akin to being pulled over by a cop for speeding and trying to get out of it by saying "but officer, everyone else was speeding too!".

...'Antennagate'...

PLEASE stop using that term, it only shows your ignorance. The Watergate is a HOTEL. Appending "gate" onto anything was overused, cliche, and trite twenty years ago. Now it's just pathetic. Don't try to make something more sensational than it is by giving it a lame moniker.

Ah, but don't forget he also pointed out that Apple has the best customers in the world

"Why, hello officer. That's a very flattering sleeve length on you"
