Well I remember (before the i'm a mac ads) when everyone ripped apple for being too complacent with their marketing and too weak in pointing out their strengths relative to MS.

Hey folks - MS can take the criticism, their empire is weakening anyway so their getting used it. If apple was smart they will keep up the comparisons with vista all the way till the release of leopard, that way it stays fresh in everyones mind. When leopard comes out then apple should fully slam vista - ending with a grand crescendo of the obvious superiority of leopard and bundled apps.

smartphones and regular phones in general have been able to browse the internet for years now. Internet communicator? whatever the name is yeah thats really INNOVATIVE.

It supports the internet fully, not just rubbish mobile mostly-text websites, but the real websites...

and I think Apple has accepted that when it comes to operating systems: limited market share. Were they unhappy with their 5-ish %, they'd have developed and released OS X for generic PCs.

Microsoft has a tight relationship with OEMs when it comes to operating systems. Look at consumer sites from Dell, HP, Gateway, Lenovo, Toshiba, etc., and see the choices in operating systems: Various flavors of Windows. No Linux. Linux is freely available, and having tried out Ubuntu, I think it's quite nice, and yet, not one offers any flavor of Linux. It doesn't take a genious to realize that 1) PC manufacturers really have no intentions to offer choices, and 2)fighting Microsoft head-on this way is a recipe for disaster. But where Microsoft is weak, e.g., music players and music store, Apple is out there and winning.

is it good or not? I don't judge. if apple think thats the way to control the quality, then apple need to accept the consequence of limited market.

Lets anger MS some more, maybe they will pull the plug on Office then, as they did with IE and Windoze Media. (which although I dont really like any of those products, they are necessary evils. If MS ever dropped Office, alot of us would be forced to become "switch-back-ers"

IE and Winblows Media are free apps so MS could care less to support these apps on a Mac. Office however is not free. They will not drop Office on the Mac platform and affect their top line revenues. There's no need to switch back cause we've got BootCamp and Parallels.

I don't give a Rats Arse....

I would much rather be in the minority (cult) that we are currenty in, than be a feckin sheep...

I love the fact that we are like 5% of the computing world. We know we're good. We know OSX is far better than anything else out there. So why not let it rest at that?

I say... let them all do what they want. It makes no difference to me whatsoever.

Yeh and lets not forget solutions like crossover - which could further evolve and be bundled in future os x to run the windows version of office - granted apple might need some small developer aggreement with MS for APIs, compatibiltity, etc.

This way apple doesn't need to have that dark cloud of MS pulling office over their heads.

It will make a difference when you want that new program and find out there isnt a Mac version because the market is to tiny. Apple is at Microsofts mercy at the moment and you dont understand that.

I always thought that too, until I actually got my Mac. Everything I wanted to do, I can do in OSX, and usually with an equivalent or better program. And if something I can't do pops up, well golly, I got Boot Camp, & Parallels!

funny how someone who writes so eloquently needs to resort to calling people names...

Alas, I am not perfect. However ...

Anonymous: Everyone here is anonymous, at least to some extent. I didn't mean this as a jibe of uNext's character, but more a description of the forum.

braindead: Okay, that was a jibe. And, of the three adjectives, the least fair.

twerp: A silly or annoying person. Spoken with a bit of vitriol because of how often his arguments have warped when countered and tend to stray to tiresomely over-argued territory (such as implying that if something was not brought forth from the head of Zeus fully formed and without precedent it is not innovation; we could respond by asking him to point out anything in the past two centuries which qualifies as innovation by such a definition, but that's a discussion that's been had time and again and, frankly, has grown both silly and annoying).

When arguments descend to unprovable and immobile assertions being flung back and forth ("Is too!" "Is not!") then "twerp" is about the only description which can be used (note, for both/all participants, myself included :) ).

AND DO YOU KNOW THAT APPLE IS PAYING MICROSOFT FOR THR RIGHTS TO USE THE VISTA NAME? have any of you heard of copyright infringement?
yeah apple is attacking microsoft but in the process they are paying them lol

NOW THATS FUNNY lol

MICROSOFT IS ALL ABOUT BUSINESS APPLE IS STILL IN KIDDY LAND. very obvious with their vista attacks.

Okay, last time feeding the troll, promise.

How is Apple using the Vista name in a manner which would subject it to charges of "copyright" infringement (by which I assume you mean trademark infringement, as the Vista name is a trademark, not a copyrighted work)? You do realize that talking about a competitor's product is not trademark (or copyright) infringement, right? Trademark infringement would be selling a product with the same or substantially similar name, like "Mike Rowe Soft's Visduh".

my worry...

if apple goes too overboard with this, microsoft can just pull support for office for mac. then apple won't be laughing anymore...

Yeah, I've always felt the best way to switch a non-Mac user is to show them what's so nice about using a Mac, not belittle their current choice of operating system.

Absolutely! Like act your age not your shoe size. PC users tend to get on the defensive very quickly when you point out all of the failings in Windows, especially when they may not necessarily have suffered from a lot of them. I think it is better to show the benefits that the user will get from using a Mac when they are in store looking at one.

I somewhat disagree.

With Microsoft pulling Visual Basic macros from Office 2008, its already a bit of a dead duck IMO. The momentum of the industry is moving towards Open Document format, which Leopard already supports. Also, Office 2007 has moved to Office XML for its formats, which Microsoft will document much more than .doc, .ppt etc. I think the reliance on Office is coming to an end, and it will be more a case of the word processing features Word offers as opposed to maintaining compatibility that persuades people to buy it - Governments etc are moving away from that kind of thing, which does take a lot of power away from Microsoft.

M$ will support Office for Mac until it's unprofitable to support Office for Mac... not a minute longer.

Look at all the serious abuse they take from various European countries yet somehow it's worth their time to continually find ways to pacify them.

All we're talking about here is an advertising campaign that dares to compare product features.

No worries.

i just keep thinking about this, because apple likes to do stupid marketing things like this all the time.

remember that horrible intel ad? where they said the intel chip is being set free?

intel's rep damn well had something to say about that. they were upset because they would never give their customers that message of the intel chip being trapped inside pcs etc.

and that add didnt stay on apples website or television for long after that.

apparently jobs was in marketing before the computer business? well if he has anything to do with this he needs to go.

i really thought he was different at macworld boston giving that whole speech about apple trying to beat microsoft blah blah.

its enough. just be a damn company and stop trying to beat microsoft because it isn't happening. at least not for a long time.

I think this is how "I am a mac" commercial should end. Just a personal opinion. So take a good laugh if you like!

Right now, continue with this bombardment until Leopard is released. Then when Leopard is about to come, the mac guy invites PC guy to switch over to Mac. The PC guy is initially reluctant to do that. Then with leopard released, mac guy shows PC guy all the fun features and advancements in leopard and the PC guy is truly "Wow"-ed (so to speak in terms of MS propaganda). Ultimately, this whole series of "I am a mac, I am a PC" ends with the advert " I am a Mac, and hello I am also a Mac from now". So finally PC guy switches to hip Mac. These endings can be done with a row of ads with PC regreting for not switching earlier and that how hard it was to work with windows everytime Mac guy shows a new feature to the new convert. In my opinion that would be an awesome ending to these otherwise childish ads that many people say here.
:)

Firstly, it is unlikely that these anti-vista slogans will be anything more than humerous jokes, ie. the "Vista 2.0" kind of thing. I don't see how many people will be insulted by this.

In my opinion, anyone who is insulted by these things wouldn't be convinced to buy a mac in any other way either. I think Steve is doing it right by trying to coax people who don't like the idea of spending lots of money just to upgrade to an operating system that has many flaws, and quite simply a lot of problems.

The people who refuse to switch will be cut off from the general public, and will therefore be pressured to switch to mac from all sides, and therefore Apple will conquer the world! ;) Well it's good in theory...

I mean you just have to watch the standard Vista ad... I mean talk about painful!

Let the games begin! I know who I'm barracking for!

Politicians do this kind of stuff all the time. At least the ones that get elected.

I think that Apple is doing the right thing by making Jabs at Vista. I think that they need to mix so nicer stuff with some meaner stuff. That way its more like antagonizing your dory little brother.

Wow how innovative they added a 5 year old product(ipod) and combined it with a cell phone.....I mean seriously do any of you see pass whats in front of you? Everything thats considered INNOVATIVE FOR APPLE IS OLD IN THE REAL WORLD. The only reason why is new is because is a NEW APPLE CELL PHONE PRODUCT first apple branded mobile "communicator" with an apple appeal. Nothing new about it.

Sit down and think for a minute, take jobs charisma out of your ass and see that IT IS NOT THAT GREAT. I am willing to bet money that when apple decides to support MICROSOFT in their cell phones they will outsell anything out there till then is just another cripled product restricted to what jobs believes is good for you.

Remember apple would have been stuck with their amazing 1-2% market share if they would have never decided to SUPPORT MICROSOFT.

Lets be realistic they are attacking a company that helped them get the shares the yalways dreamed off.

NO! You're the one who is funny. :D

Everything that comes out of you is full of nonsense! What's your point in all of your posts here on MacRumors??? You seem to have trouble comprehending the idea that Apple is gaining marketshare in pc hardware, OS and are tops in DAP. That everywhere you turn you see an Apple product or people around you are talking Apple, Apple and Apple. You scratch your head wondering why? You ask yourself "Why is this happening? I don't get it?" WHO MOVED MY CHEESE??? The short answer is, Apple does it better. Better built computers, better product design, better OS, better music players, better software integration, better user experience.

Obviously, you're just trolling here. Get a life and find yourself another forum where you belong. Goodbye!

I am disgusted.. very childish....

Awesome idea. If they do this. they should mac PC wear windows vista colors.

A/B comparison shows that Apple is confident in its product. When you only have a small market share, that's what you have to do, and being proud/boastful is in the nature of a company that is increasingly modelled on Jobs himself. This is a good thing, I say.

A/B marketing is always done by the underdog. This positioning of comparing tangible attributes is just a weak attempt at capturing mindspace that is occupied by a dominant player.

And Apple's marketing dept is sucka.

$600 Dells WERE quite popular. Those won't run Vista's super-special pretty "Aero" though!

Expect a severe increase in Dell prices once Vista is in the mainstream, eating up XP positions.

I hate to tell you this but most people running $600 boxes don't care about Aero. 90% of the features in Visa will run on these budget boxes just fine, as long as you are running at least 512MB of RAM. Why? Because the OS scales just like OS X. Some of the prettier effects, read: Aero, are scaled back but everything else works.

What people are going to care about on Vista is the enhanced security. And like it or not MS HAS worked on security in Vista. Between a substantially updated firewall, segments of the OS that are compartmentalized from other sections of the OS, auto updates that are enabled by default (Which BTW was a MAJOR issue with XP prior to SP2), and other stuff that is escaping me at the moment (I read a pretty nice whitepaper on Vista and security about a month ago.) Vista should do a good job at bring Windows up to date without leaving everyone in the dust who has a 2-3 year old computer.

BTW- I'm running Vista business on my Thinkpad T40. Originally 1.4Ghz/512MB RAM, 40GB HD. I jacked the RAM up to 1GB and saw a huge boost in performance. Sad as it may be 1GB seems to be the new sweet spot for Windows. With 512MB being the previous happy place for XP.

All microsoft has that apple doesn't is a lot more software. That's about it. I can't think of anything that Windows does that is difficult to do in OS X let alone impossible. The real reason the government and all use windows is because they'd have to buy all of their software again, and that makes no sense.

Edit: Also, I'm pretty sure most people in my government drink the blood of virgins to live longer, which might have something to do with why they use windows.

I have to disagree. Mac are not as good as windows at caching viruses and worms for lunch and for dressing up for dinner Macs are not as good at the spy-wear thing either. There windows is better!!!!
