I was going to get an X, but caved for an 8 Plus for a few reasons:
- $799 is already a hefty price tag for a smartphone, but $999 is ridiculous. The technology in the X will become mainstream next year at a more reasonable price point.
- There are confirmations of continued production issues. I'd be shocked if most pre-orders are honored prior to 12/31/17. At that point, we're almost halfway to the next iPhone launch. Is this the 2017 or 2018 iPhone?
- The X has no real improvements over the 8+, with the exception of slightly "larger"/improved screen. I phrase it that way, because the screen isn't as wide as the Plus, and the area to the left and right of the notch isn't truly useable (see image below). Sure, higher PPI and contrast ratio, but it's not worth a $200 premium in my book. I don't consider facial recognition (or "Animoji") an improvement over Touch ID, but maybe with time it will mature and earn my buy-in.
- X has inferior battery life to 8 Plus
So I would need to pay $200 more to wait until early 2018 for a phone with inferior battery life but the same/smaller screen size, with the same internal hardware as the 8 Plus.
Similar to the first iPhone, the X is the guinea pig product. It's overpriced, and somewhat without a refined direction. I'm already ready for the X "S" or successor (and with a plus model), but until we have some quality reviews of this new product, I'm not ready to wait months on end to shell out $1,000+ on this device.
Maybe once demand dies down, Apple will cut the price like they did for the original iPhone, and I'll try it then. For now, looking forward to using my 8 Plus.
