The thread title question implies that the majority of purchasers are unhappy with their new Macbook Pros. I doubt that is actually the case.

There are a few main areas of complaints:

1) Glossy screen only - This is a valid complaint.

2) Macbook Air style keyboard - Personal preference. I like the new keyboard, but that is what I am used to.

3) Minor imperfections/flaws/problems - This is nothing new and you'll find that every model of Apple computer ever made has had a few minor defects in some units. Return it, exchange it, be done with it. :D

4) Software glitch/multitouch problem - The new gestures are fairly new and the software is just getting out into the market. Apple will be patching it so I'm not paying it much attention at the moment.

I'm happy with my Macbook Pro, but that is just my opinion.

I get the feeling the defective ones with minor imperfections or dead pixels or other such things are due to the fact that they are bought from one of the mac stores, as opposed to buying it from Apple? Am I in the ballpark saying that?

Incorrect.

It's not so bad...

We have both the 'early 2008' MBP 15" with glossy screen and 'late 2008' MBP 15" with 'glassy' screen in our test lab. The refections in the 'late' screen are more pronounced and bothersome. But at least the screen is easier to clean (wink, wink).

I prefer the 'early' keyboard. It's quieter and the keys are not slippery. The 'late' keyboard is noisier -- especially the space bar -- and show up oily finger smudges. But the black keys with white lettering are easier to see in a situation where it's almost too dark to see them but too light for the backlighting to kick in.

The trackpad's button function 'snaps' loudly. But I enabled the 'virtual' click in preferences for when I'm trying to be stealthy.

I've gone through the three phases of new product ownership:
1. This is great.
2. This is crap.
3. This isn't so bad.

I'm in phase 3.

Generally I'm very happy with it. I didn't think I'd like the glossy keyboard, but it's fine except under extreme lighting. That's not to say I still wouldn't rather have matte. The trackpad is driving me a little batty, and scares off all but the most confident Mac users. If Apple doesn't fix the s/w immediately they could turn off a lot of "switchers."

Completely happy with mine, the brightness of the LCD really negates most of the issues with the glass screen, and the image really does 'pop' (directly compared to girl friends matt MBP screen).
My machine is used for entertainment (games, dvds, photos, eyetv etc) ie I'm not a professional but the screen has really caused little to no issue for me.
I have no wonky keys, no dents, no dead pixels and I have removed the batt cover and replaced it: no issue.
I have upgraded from a 2.2ghz white MacMook to the base 2.4 MBP, the new keys are great (v similar to the WMB) and illuminated :) (not to mention the obvious performance boost).
All in all I love it.

I'm getting used to the multiple gestures and I'm enjoying the trackpad so much that using a mouse would almost be counter intuitive for me. Scrolling, flipping through webpages, seeing all my window, all with very simple finger gestures becomes very natural after about a day of transition. Every now and then, I have to click the track pad more than once for it to register the click - but it's not that bothersome.

btw, you meant "glossy screen", not "keyboard" right?

love mine

Ordered my 2.8 GHz, 320 GB HDD 7200 on the 14th, got it on thursday. Love everything about it, absolutely no complaints about it at all thus far. Screen is freaking amazing, quiet, and the unibody construction is super solid. If you can afford it, and need the upgrade, I highly recommend it.

Loving my 2.4Ghz Macbook Pro. No complaints on the build or finish of the case. The glossy screen really isn't a problem as the screen is really bright, to the point that I have to turn it down. The keyboard is fine however it does show grease and oils from the fingers if they're not clean. Overall though, I'm loving it!!

I absolutely love mine. First, I bought a macbook and was very disappointed with the screen viewing angles so I returned it and went with the pro and was amazed at how much better the screen is than the macbooks.

I also owned one of the new MacBooks but was very disappointed with the screen viewing angles. I took it back and got the Pro instead.

Ditto, I did the same. I elaborated on my situation in the regular macbook forum. The higher quality screen, was a big difference maker.

Yup, HUGE difference. My previous notebook was the 17" MacBook Pro with the hi-rez matte screen. I loved it...but this new MacBook Pro screen puts it shame. I'd have to say it is the best looking notebook screen I have ever owned.

Extremely disappointed and unhappy with the top end 15" aluminum MBP. I can live with the small scratches on the side but the terribly loud noise coming from the fans area no matter if I'm using the computer or not is really annoying me.

Apple don't know the meaning of the word quality these days!

Incase anyone wants to question my judgement, I've had 6 Penryn MacBook Pros with the common issues for example 8600 dud, vertical stripes and dents in the casing and now this £1,749 aluminum MBP with scratches and whirring noise.

I just upgraded from a 4 month old MBP and I love it.
Was worried about the glossy screen, but its great so far.
Maybe this should have been a vote, I would be interested in seeing the %'s of happy vs non happy.

No confusion and no hot flush....
This is not a place for you.
You have complained about the Late 2008 MBP in other threads, and then again here. What is your problem, can't stand to see people happy? Time for you to just leave this thread alone. Your comments are non-responsive so go preach your opinions in the proper place.

Again, another member who wants to know who likes and who does not like the new MBP. A fair question! Nothing out of the ordinary Jeff. Some people just don't want everything sugar coated. To make an educated decision about a new purchase a consumer must see both sides of the coin.

I have also stated that I highly respect Apple so I don't know why you have become offended.

I genuinely apologize to you as I have obviously made you feel insecure about your new purchase.

If you are happy with the new Mac though, who is to make you decide otherwise. Everyone has different standards.

Does anyone else's new MBP have a right speaker which is much louder than the left? It's bugging the hell out of me, everything sounds like it's coming from the right side.

Otherwise, everything else is great.

I'm excited and extremely happy about my new MBP. And this is coming from a guy who's been through 12x 15" 2007 MBP and 8 early 2008 15" MBP.

Well sir, I appreciate your civil tones, however you are still missing the point.

The OP here, Mr. McFly, stated in his opening post
"anyone actually HAPPY with their new MBP?
so far i've read nothing but complaints on here about it from the glossy screen, crooked keys, screen resolution, cosmetic imperfections etc.
so i'm wondering if there is anyone who purchased one who is genuinely happy with their purchase and have a flawless(in their eyes) product?
all these posts about defects or imperfections has me worried about the arrival of mine. just need a bit of reassurance from satisfied customers. haha"

Outside of a few thread hijackers who want to expose the thread to opportunistic infections (the "list of horribles" posters who have already stated their complaints in innumerable threads). This thread has demonstrated that a sizable number of posters are happy with their purchases.

My outrage with you is that, despite:
  • your posting your "list of horribles" in other places, and
  • your additional postings in other "my mac sucked" threads
you refuse to respect other people's wishes.

I am genuinely sorry for your problems and disappointment and maybe after some more time with my MBP I will also have a negative feeling about it but, I would never presume to state my negative views in a place where someone was asking for positive feedback. Your discounting of Mr. McFly's statement "so far i've read nothing but complaints on here about it from the glossy screen, crooked keys, screen resolution, cosmetic imperfections etc. so i'm wondering if there is anyone who purchased one who is genuinely happy with their purchase and have a flawless(in their eyes) product?" shows that he did not need to be educated about the defects, in fact, it appears he can read quite well.

To answer the original question: Yes, so far...

Got a 2.8 with 320 7200 RPM two days ago. I moved from the early macbookPro 15" which was matte and did have a noisy fan thing going on lately. I also have an Air which I love.

First impressions were great, until I noticed the screen was much more reflective than my Air. This surprised me. I was initially disappointed, but then noticed that it wasn't so bad on the lit part of the screen (bad along the border) and I didn't have much of a problem ignoring the reflections as I worked. The good thing was the screen seemed to be much brighter and sharper than my older MBP, which has some uneven lighting.

No sleep problems yet. Overall, I really like it. Very fast video, better XP performance (I know, but I need it for DB2 and Websphere EJB development). Fit and finish is greatly improved. Keyboard is actually pretty nice, IMO.

Regarding the sleep issue I have been having where the computer would wake up out of sleep for no reason, it happened again yesterday. I took it back to the Apple store and got another MacBook Pro. Let's hope this one isn't possessed.

I got mine yesterday afternoon and so far everything appears to be flawless. The screen has no dead or stuck pixels and looks absolutely amazing, and my unibody seems to be flawless as well. I'm taking this baby to class for the first time today. Although I actually thought this thing felt huge because i've been toting a 2 pound 8.9 inch netbook around for two months :p
Ditto

I even don't mind the glossy screen that much. Although I may still get one of those screen protectors that turns the screen into a semi-matte one.

I bought my 2.53 MBP Saturday 10/25 at Best Buy ($50 in Reward Zone Certificates) and so far it's perfect!

I'm looking forward to using it with my external monitor as I'm waiting for my Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter to come in.

BTW, Nice going Apple! for rendering the external monitor of everyone who buys a new MB/MBP useless and not having the proper adapter available at Apple Stores or anywhere else for the matter.

It's bad enough we have to spend $29 to make our own equipment useful again but making apple.com the only way to get one is just flat out insulting!

Would it have really killed them to include this adapter in the damn box!

No complaints here. Really like the graphics so far, waiting for for some of the applications and OS to fully take agvantage of all the features.

...as soon as nehalem and snow leopard arrive!

Have fun with that, waiting until late 2009? I will happily be using my MBP until those are released. Looking forward to owning both. ;)

I've had mine a little under a week and love it. I gave my previous, one-year old MBP to my wife. I prefer the glossy screen, but then I always prefer glossy screens on laptops. For photo and image work I use a Mac Pro w/ a 23" CD, so having a glossy screen on my MBP isn't an issue for me, and I think glossy screens look sharper in any event. I much prefer the keyboard on this model - it's very accurate to type on, the best keyboard I've come across in 25 years as far as accuracy goes. The trackpad is a beautifully-engineered piece of work, though I usually use a Logitch VX Nano notebook mouse (the kind where the USB receiver only projects about a 1/4"). This new machine is also both quieter and cooler (to the touch) than the machine it replaces. I thought the old MPB was a great laptop, but this is a substantial improvement IMO.
