If Apple made a Macbook having no ports, the most uncomfortable keyboard in history, highest price ever, I'd say ok, it's their choice, and buy something else.

If Apple did, a lot of people on this site would still passionately defend them :)

... which also says a lot about the competition. Clearly Apple lost a lot of its mojo, and some people that once loved Apple's products seem to have sobered down quite a bit. Including myself, can't say I like where Apple is heading with the Mac line-up right now. That said, I still prefer it very much over Microsoft.

Its kinda sad the computer market is pretty much a duopoly. I'd love to see e.g. BeOS/Haiku OS thriving. Plasma 5 is a great desktop as well. GNUStep, anyone? Too bad those are literally nowhere when it comes to market share.

I'd really see a much more diverse desktop landscape. Unfortunately not going to happen even in the long shot

I would also like to see more Desktop/Laptop OS choices than the current offerings, and see MacOS available as an official option on non-Apple hardware. Why not license a few other manufacturers to make MacOS laptops and sell them through the Apple store?
Same for phones - more than just iOS or Android would be cool.
At least in the PC market there is choice and some innovation - even if that means there is some real junk out there too.

There’s a reason iphones are stable and reliable and android phones are all over the place. Offering macOS to any clown show that wants it would only lead to those non Apple devices running terribly.

Apple is like Art Deco/Modern Art, it’s looks are nice but the computers leave a lot out and that’s why windows machines sell more, they have boutique company’s, changing color lights, nice shell designs like Alienware and most of all gaming.

Windows machines sell more because A most people learned on windows and don’t know how to use Mac and B they want a sub $500 machine.

Not to mention countless companies make windows machines. Only one company makes Mac.

I hoped this would be about iPhone as I was just about to start a thread.
Regarding iPhone, I've got iPhone X & have had various prior, owning many Apple products.
However, I got the Huawei Mate 20 Pro to try. I've sent it back, but damned it was difficult. Now I'm left with iPhone X again & next week launch of Galaxy S10. Don't know about you, but I don't think I can resist.
Nothing to do with notch, Huawei had it also.

Yes, of course all Android phones are all over the place  That's precisely why Android has an 87% market share.
Keep taking the pills.

Just like Windows. When countless devices use android, of course your numbers run away. Android can also be placed on dirt cheap devices. People love cheap.

Yes but it can’t be done with apple, umm a hackentosh maybe.

I used to be a huge PC gamer. I can tell you honestly that Apple should never focus on gaming. Too small of a market. Laptop gaming is even smaller.

Android os is not like apples which is smooth.

I don’t mind android for some purposes like screwing around on cheap devices or manipulating apps. But when I want a polished device like you mention, I use Apple.

I use Apple when I fly planes. It’s reliable. I’d never trust android.

Perhaps but then the market numbers will go down (atleast with windows) because why would anyone except iPad users want to continually upgrade or businesses for that matter, the upgrading comes from new gaming parts like increased cpu/gpu and fancy multicolored flashing lights like a ufo is landing in a back yard.

The 90s? Uhhh you do know the history of Apple right? As in when they were a total disaster and Jobs had to come back and save them.

20+ years ago is irrelevant now.
Of course I do, at the time Apple was selling way to many product lines which was very confusing for the end user (sound familiar). I have been with Mac since System 7 and the past is once again becoming the present.

Apple sucked in the 90s for many reasons. A terrible OS. Nothing was compatible with any other system. Very few apps on the Mac. Terrible products, terrible performance, etc. etc. All around junk.

I do agree today's Apple is heading for the 90s again. I don't think it's too many products. I think it's horrendous leadership and zero vision or innovation. Tim Cook is a complacent coward that likes to play it safe. Over the last 8 years, nothing significant has happened. We've changed ports, we've added stupid crap like a touch bar, and we've ended things like the 17" MBP and the iPad mini. It's been incremental changes. They won't change until their bottom line takes a hit, and so far it hasn't.

Don't get me wrong, I still love Apple. I still think their products are the best for me. That says a lot about the competition out there. It was the same in the 80s. Apple floated for a while on the Apple 2 and Macintosh then went totally flat. It took years for them to really tank. Amazon or Google or someone else is going to slap them around soon if they don't step it up.

There's many reasons why windows machines sell more then Macs. Multiple vendors is of course one major reason.

What I'm seeing somewhat is more people choosing to buy windows machines instead of macs for various reasons. A couple of reasons I've come across, is value, i.e., price/features but mostly because the macs are not doing what they want. Windows machines always had an edge on using faster components, now for the past few years computer makers are designing some really nice looking machines. So now we have good looking computers that run faster then Macs and are typically cheaper then macs, either through regular pricing or perpetual discounts.

I think Apple focused on iDevices so long and largely ignored laptops/desktops that other companies were able to swoop in and woo customers who would have purchased macs. Add in the incredible negatively towards apple design choices from 2016 and beyond (Touchbar, butterfly keyboard) and that just alienates more people.

Apple is selling a lot of macs, I'm not arguing that they're doomed, but I am saying to some degree the bloom is off the rose, they don't have the same allure as they used too. Even the hackintosh sector has seemingly quieted down, I have no numbers to back up my opinion, but it seems there's less of a draw to make hackintohes. Only Mac users not willing to buy a mac are mostly interested in hackintoshes.

Don't forget the corporate world alone ensures Windows machines sell. Apple doesn't care nor has an answer to Active Directory, Exchange, SharePoint, etc.

I'll stick with Apple for my computer as long as they keep MAC OS going. I love MAC OS, and as someone that used Windows since the 3.0 days, I can honestly say Windows is total ****. I have issues or errors weekly on my work laptop that runs Windows. They peaked at 7, and now 8 to 10 is going backwards. They are dumbing down everything. I can't stand Windows.

Here is one reason why windows machines sold and that is when the AMIGA and ST computers were around places (incentive to salesmen/woman) had those computers unplugged so no one could view the graphics and stereo sound capability the 16-bit systems had while the ibm wintel boxes had 8-bit graphics and mono sound.

Actually I had Windows 7 on Alienware 15 and the system was very sluggish like a tortoise even with 16GB memory and quick Samsung EVO SSD, Windows 10 is flying on this machine also gaming capabilities are much better, blue screens probably means your hardware is defective so I recommend contact with manufacturer or shop to obtain warranty

Agreed, Apple is not interested in the enterprise.

I have to disagree, while you can dislike windows, and many people do, I don't think its total ****. My workstation has never crashed, its rock solid, I also support servers and windows server has been fine.

I myself predate windows 3.0, I actually used windows 1.0 on an old DEC pc, and I was using PC Dos version 1

As for windows, nothing is perfect, both macOS and Windows has its positives and negatives. I like macOS a lot, but that in of itself doesn't mean Windows is bad. I get it, you don't like windows and you've had issues but I've found windows to be largely solid. I can do more in windows that I can in macOS.
