I have to disagree, while you can dislike windows, and many people do, I don't think its total ****. My workstation has never crashed, its rock solid, I also support servers and windows server has been fine.

I myself predate windows 3.0, I actually used windows 1.0 on an old DEC pc, and I was using PC Dos version 1

As for windows, nothing is perfect, both macOS and Windows has its positives and negatives. I like macOS a lot, but that in of itself doesn't mean Windows is bad. I get it, you don't like windows and you've had issues but I've found windows to be largely solid. I can do more in windows that I can in macOS.

You must be about the same age as me.

I thought Windows was **** back in the Vista days, but heck so did MS. I switched to Mac during that **** show. But since picking up that Surface Pro last year, I have had no issues or problems with Windows. I too like MacOS. The UX is slick and consistent, I like the interconnectivity of the eco. But I would definitely not say Windows 10 is **** either. It does what I need it to do, which is mostly get out of the way. Same with OSX.

I thought Windows was **** back in the Vista days,
Vista was horrible, I remember when it was code named Longhorn, and it had so many promising technologies, but as the years rolled by, they stripped feature after feature. i was working in a computer store when windows 3.1 came out and it was pandemonium.

Windows 8 was bad as well, but I didn't hate it. MS messed up on focusing on touch first and mobile, windows 10 is a nice return and I'd say MS is more dedicated to adding more features to windows then Apple is to macOS.

I've said this before, for my needs windows is better all in all, because of my job and what I need to do. I gave up some of that effeciency because I enjoy Macs so much, it was only at the point of the issues with the MBP, I decided to give up on the Mac.

One more strange thing I noticed on Windows 10, by default it wakes up during the night, downloads the updates and forcefully restarts, no matter if you had running applications and open documents.

That's still better then having that occur during the day, which it used to do

I don't mind windows updating itself, I find the notifications to be less intrusive then macOS. macOS down right nags you about updating.

I don't mind updating, but open files could be damaged. It should go back to sleep and ask for restart.

Agreed. I use Windows at work, and while I prefer macOS, Windows 10 is rock solid in my experience. I've read about many of the issues (and there have been some serious ones) but my machine is rock solid. It's still not a great experience, there are lots of things that don't make sense, but it's very stable on my current Windows machine.

In fact, I'd say that my Windows 10 experience has been better than my High Sierra experience was. Though with Mojave we're back on solid ground again.

I can’t say that I have noticed my Surface Pro doing that. Sometimes I wake it up in the AM and see a message that it has done an update that requires a restart, but I can’t recall it ever doing so in its own.

Actually I had Windows 7 on Alienware 15 and the system was very sluggish like a tortoise even with 16GB memory and quick Samsung EVO SSD, Windows 10 is flying on this machine also gaming capabilities are much better, blue screens probably means your hardware is defective so I recommend contact with manufacturer or shop to obtain warranty

You probably needed a reinstallation of 7. We had Win7 running on old Dell Latitude laptops around 2009-2010 with the 1st gen Intel SSDs and 4-8gigs of memory. They ran fine.

Windows doesn't crash as much anymore as it throws out lovely errors. Windows Server is fine. Exchange/Outlook is always so-so. SharePoint is a disaster.

What are you doing in Windows that you can't do in MACOS?

It's funny after decades, Microsoft is still terrible at pushing updates. Remember the Windows 8 malware they pushed to everyone with 7? You had to go in and remove that update like you were fighting malware or your system was being automatically upgraded to 8. I have office on my Mac, and it's by far the worst program with updates. For some reason, Office apps need several hundred meg updates every few weeks. Why does Word and Excel require 200mb updates routinely?

Oh Microsoft it's just good you had virtually zero serious competition in the 90s.

"fine" it's not sufficient for me, I tried Windows 7 on few machines mainly gaming laptops and is very sluggish comparing to Windows 10

I use both platforms but for AutoCAD the Windows OS version is much better than the Mac counterpart which is just a dumbed down version that looks slick. My Windows experience on Win 10 is rock solid and ultra fast as well. No complaints.

I need MS Project for my job. If it wasn't for that app, I'd be 100% done with Windows for work. I can't stand 10, and I can't stand the crappy laptops our company buys.

I said fine, because I was talking about 10 year old laptops with core 2 duo chips and horrendous memory on SSD drives that feel more like platter drives compared to today's flash storage.

Not sure what you were doing, but Win 7 screams on gaming. edit: just realized you said laptops. It may have been a driver or hardware issue. Many laptops recently are stuffed with hardware that either doesn't have a win 7 driver at all or is just less than ideal.

I'm not talking about performance in games, but overall sluggishness feeling when I'm using Windows 7 like for example slow updates, long boot up time etc. comparing to Windows 10 where is much quicker, the drivers are the same in Windows 7 and Windows 10, only NVIDIA driver is different

Ahhh. Yeah I think Win 10 improved their boot times, and yeah Win 7 updates are terrible. All of Microsoft updates are just horrible. Apple has been doing amazing with updates for over a decade, and MS still sucks.

What is it with this 'us against them' mentality? Everything MS does is horrible and everything Apple does is devine? No offence but you generalize a lot. You do know life does not work that way? Both companies make nice things and both companies make things that suck. It is not all black and white.

I never said everything, and you’re also on a forum that is literally dedicated to Apple products. You’re surprised Microsoft is being hated?

What are you doing in Windows that you can't do in MACOS?
- autoarchive email and clean mailboxes in Outlook
- access detailed investment information in Quicken
- freely select which of the multiple monitors connected to Mac are enabled
- work remotely using 13 inch laptop on machine that is connected to ultrawide 1440p monitor.
- stream DRM protected Netflix or Amazon movies in FHD on pre Ivy-bridge computer
- play games I like
- access all my home security cameras without paying hundreds of dollars in fees
EDIT: (forgot about it)
- use NVIDIA cards
- or any other hardware that I like and Apple does not

And that's actually only the stuff that's going on on my screens at this very moment.

Did you read this thread? Did you also read the title? Until now this was quite a constructive discussion where bashing of both companies was avoided. You are painting very broad strokes, very black and white ('I hate Windows', 'Windows is ****' etc.) without adding something constructive to this thread.
I assume people in any forum should be capable of having a constructive mature discussion without resorting to a football club mentality.
Again you are painting very broad strokes assuming that most people on this forum hate Microsoft, I have been in numerous threads on this forum where people are perfectly capable of having a mature (more or less) unbiased discussion, including this one.

I'm sorry you feel that way. Ignore me then if you don't like what I have to say. Not hard.

They make Outlook and Quicken for MAC, unless you're talking about some features that aren't available on the MAC version. That's more a software developer problem than a mac problem.

Some of the other stuff I'm not sure what you mean, but yeah the gaming aspect is long gone. Apple really doesn't care about hardcore gaming, and I'm surprised we even have decent graphics cards in the MacBooks to play some games.

And to some of us the gaming aspects are important. It is also a simple fact that a decade ago the software for Mac was markedly better than the software for windows. Now? It is pretty much even-Steven as they say. So if I can game only on Windows, and the software is pretty much the same, what is my motivation to pay more for Apple hardware?

Oh and before it is asked, I have owned an iBook, Macbook, and several different version of Macbook Pros. Now I am down to a Hackintosh (you know so I could dual boot and play some games in Windows). I find myself spending more and more time away from the Apple world. Kind of makes me sad really.

--edited to add:

Oh, and developer problems are usually a result of an underlying OS problem. So in the long run developer problems are Mac problems.

Different strokes for different folks ya know? I always had a windows desktop for gaming. Laptops are not good in general for gaming, and I know Apple was never great for gaming. Their OS and lack of games being ported to macOS are a real hinderance. It all comes down to the market. Why would Apple change gears and target the gaming market when it's so small and not exactly a place filled with the deepest pockets.

Really depends on the situation. If a company is too lazy or doesn't want to make their software for Mac, then it's not a Mac problem. Situations vary. Countless companies are able to make identical software for both, including free software.

Ahhh. Yeah I think Win 10 improved their boot times, and yeah Win 7 updates are terrible. All of Microsoft updates are just horrible. Apple has been doing amazing with updates for over a decade, and MS still sucks.

Funny you say that when so many of Apple's updates introduce serious bugs or even break entire software suites. And they manage to do this while barely changing anything.

At least despite Windows automatic updates (which I dislike the idea of but so far haven't done me harm other than their timing) have yet to ever break anything for me. Heck, I can still run very old software without issue or requiring the developers to update, which I think is great. Didn't think we'd see the day where I'd praise MS for stability over Apple, but here we are.

One more strange thing I noticed on Windows 10, by default it wakes up during the night, downloads the updates and forcefully restarts, no matter if you had running applications and open documents.

Heck, even my Tesla does that. But I got Arcade games and fart noises last time. And next time I get Dog mode, a new sentry mode, and more camera recording. So rebooting at night is not necessarily a bad thing.

Umm the problems which you speak of are rare. A small percentage of Apple updates introduce bugs or problems. Out of those, an even smaller percentage is actually a serious issue.

Most if not all get resolved. This forum has seriously become a whine fest over Apple.

Really depends on the situation. If a company is too lazy or doesn't want to make their software for Mac, then it's not a Mac problem.
Oh, it is, OS is nothing without software. The two samples of missing features in Outlook and Quicken for Mac were enough to force me to run Windows on MBP in VM. Heck, I was even remoting into Windows VM and using the mounted Mac drive in it because I somehow didn't like full 3440x1440 MacOS screen scaled to fit 13 inch MBA display.

But that's not really a point, software repository size for MacOS/OSX was always order of magnitude smaller than Windows. Hardware and its integration with OS was making up for it, and while the integration part is as good as has always been, the hardware design choices are alienating people who think that iPad is not going to replace a computer.
