Oh, it is, OS is nothing without software. The two samples of missing features in Outlook and Quicken for Mac were enough to force me to run Windows on MBP in VM. Heck, I was even remoting into Windows VM and using the mounted Mac drive in it because I somehow didn't like full 3440x1440 MacOS screen scaled to fit 13 inch MBA display.

But that's not really a point, software repository size for MacOS/OSX was always order of magnitude smaller than Windows. Hardware and its integration with OS was making up for it, and while the integration part is as good as has always been, the hardware design choices are alienating people who think that iPad is not going to replace a computer.

I don’t use quicken so I can’t relate, but hundreds of people in my organization use macs running Outlook connected to our corporate exchange servers. They are auto archiving just like the windows machines, so I’m not sure what is different.

No, they're not auto archiving locally, this is not implemented on Mac version. You probably think about rules executed server side, on Exchange. Locally, on Mac version you can only auto execute rules while the email is arriving, once it is downloaded you have to run it manually.

Ahh yes. Ours archive on the server.

- autoarchive email and clean mailboxes in Outlook
- access detailed investment information in Quicken
- freely select which of the multiple monitors connected to Mac are enabled
- work remotely using 13 inch laptop on machine that is connected to ultrawide 1440p monitor.
- stream DRM protected Netflix or Amazon movies in FHD on pre Ivy-bridge computer
- play games I like
- access all my home security cameras without paying hundreds of dollars in fees
EDIT: (forgot about it)
- use NVIDIA cards
- or any other hardware that I like and Apple does not

And that's actually only the stuff that's going on on my screens at this very moment.

I would add build and training Machine Learning models in a reasonable amount of time using the Nvidia CUDA libraries.

Umm the problems which you speak of are rare. A small percentage of Apple updates introduce bugs or problems. Out of those, an even smaller percentage is actually a serious issue.

Most if not all get resolved. This forum has seriously become a whine fest over Apple.

They still occur far more than with Windows. I consider breaking software such as the Adobe suite a pretty big deal.

My (now former) 17" MBP had given me far more software issues than my Windows desktop, which hasn't missed a beat yet. Even my Linux install has so far been trouble-free. Our MBA has only had a few issues but has remained on Mavericks since day one, which helps for stability.

macOS no longer holds any advantage for me over Windows. I find Windows to be much faster and more efficient than macOS, what with its incessant input blocking from 'animations' and silly window management (including managing those windows from the dock). Even minor things like having a menu close because you accidentally clicked on a dividing bar. And that's saying nothing of the spinning beach balls or the issues with T2 chip kernel panics.

I will say that I dislike the default settings of Windows 10 very much -- pretty well have to change every single one. If Linux had better software availability I'd probably just use that for everything that isn't gaming, though. Mint Xfce is excellent!

the moment they open source mac os so you can use it on a thinkpad.... I'll consider it. But unless that happens, this is the best software experience that I have had, and everything works. Yes, the laptops need the keyboard fix, but honestly aside from that, I actually really like the new design. The screens are better, the feel is pro, all of that good jazz. Just fix the f$$king keyboard Apple!

No, not even close. I own both a 2018 MBP and a gaming MSI laptop. The keyboard, speakers, and trackpad destroy every Windows laptop. Plus, Macs hold their resale value better than any other computer on the market so I don't feel as guilty spending 3-4k on one.

Even Apple pays over $500 on a trade in for a 5 year old Mac. That’s hilarious.

A windows machine loses over half its value in no time.

Yup, the MSI I bought last year for 2400 bucks is now worth around 1200-1400 within the first year. Just checked ebay.

I just saw 2017 15" MBP 16 GB, 1 TB drive sold for $1,600 on eBay. It was over $3,000 new.

MacBook Pros are not holding value like they once did. Too many places have sales on new ones for the old ones to hold their value in the used market.

Well once you leave the default specs and add on stuff like a bigger drive etc you aren’t retaining that value.

Where are these sales on new macs?

I have been on this forum since 2011 when I purchased my first MBP. This forum has turned so much more negative toward Apple. It was about helping people, troubleshooting. I can't believe the turn around in the forum. Mike Flynn you are a Moderator, do you even own an apple product now. All I hear you do is promote MS now. What has this turned into?????

GO SOMEWHERE ELSE AND TALK WINDOWS!!!!!! This place is for MAC HELP!!!!!!

Some (many) of you aren't reading much. Reacting instead. Go back and read the thread entirely, then see if your response makes any sense.

Many of them don't. In polite terms.

Pretty sure that is not how it works. Even the forum rules state " You can express almost any opinion, whether it's a popular opinion or not, as long as you follow forum rules.

I am guessing @maflynn is well versed enough in the rules of the board to follow them.

Apple has abandoned us, not otherway around. I'm really tired of people in here defending Apple's way. I don't agree with Apple's all iOS mentality.

What I want to tell Apple is this : leave Mac as is. Improve Mac instead of merging it. No more design before functionality.

1. The keyboard is proper

2. ThinkPad are great, built like tanks.

1. Agreed

2. I would not say that.

Back in 2014, I bought a Lenovo X1-Carbon Touch ThinkPad for $2200 (a loaded Windows UltraBook). My first ever Lenovo, but my decision was based on reviews of this Gen-2 and also dependability of previous ThinkPads . Treated it like a baby, hardly took it out-of-office, and never dropped it or anything like that. It was running Win8Pro-64bit and was rock-solid for first years and everything worked perfectly. It had a 2 year warranty and motherboard failed at 2.5 years. All expensive components (i7-CPU and 8gb-RAM) were soldered-in, so all replacement motherboards are very expensive (Lenovo wanted $800 for one). Turns out, many of us on Internet fell into same X1-Carbon hole. Replacing motherboard is not easy and more like working on a iPhone or iPad. Also, the other day, I noticed its once perfect (Hi-DPI) IPS screen now has some pretty notice-able image-retention (turns-out to be another common ThinkPad problem).

Only thing I can recommend (and I follow this myself now) is to keep all machines under extended warranty. Definitely not like the old days. This includes anything with a motherboard, which is pretty-much everything electronic these days.

Quantity over quality? No thanks. It's not a popularity contest.

Don't sell it if if can't stand on it's own two feet.

If it needs protection, put your wallet back in your pocket.

The turn around firmly lies with Apple nobody else. Most who are pissed off with Apple have decades of time on the Mac and don't appreciate Apple turning the Mac into a lifestyle product just to impress the Starbucks crowd and the kiddies...

Such threads would have been unheard off as little as 5 years ago, and your going to see more and more as Apple continues on this trajectory, let alone the questionable reliability and nickel & diming us at every possible opportunity. Apple rightly deserves public backlash and this is exactly the right place to do so. It's hardly surprising people are switching to Windows as some of us need to get work done and not be concerned with flaky hardware & software, current MBP is a joke at best...

Said it before and I'll say it again "I've never seen so many professionals drop the platform and for good reason", MR is simply keeping up with the times. As for helping; people with knowledge simply stop in time, as any slight negative towards Apple and the "Apple Auto Defence Team" jumps on them, which gets old real fast as Apple is very far from being the perfect sanctuary some would like others to believe...

Agreed, but I need to buy various machines to work and live well.

I do Extended Warranty for at least 3-4 years (it's base useful life). You can also just "roll the dice" but then I suggest you put the ear-marked warranty contract money into a saving account ... you are likely going to need it. It's sad it has come to this, but most electronic and computerized machines have all become "expendable crew-members".

Well said, Apple is well and truly on a path to kill the Mac as a workhorse, stripping feature after feature, what's the end game glorified iPad with a keyboard and no touchscreen o_O

1. Good point. For that user-class ... maybe the MacBook 12inch and Air models could be the "barely a laptop" model for them ... :)

2. and the MacBookPros could be that ... built for the Professionals ...
- some real/full-sized ports
- 2mm thicker to allow for proper cooling, and upgrade-able ram (sockets).
- Easily replacable battery. Fans easy to clean... you know ... a bit service-able.
- and a nice/working/dependable keyboard (is a working/durable keyboard that hard to build)?

I always thought ... if I could find a brand-new 2012/2013 MacBookPro 13inch Retina (sealed in a box) for a non-outrageous price ... I would buy it. It was nice ... like the full "cheese-grater" MacPro tower of the time. But then you remember, this is Apple ... so how long before these 6-year old models get obsoleted by not allowing macOS upgrades?

The performance difference alone now relegates the older MBP, as does the poor design & quality of the new MBP's which can only lead to one path given many need their hardware to perform and turn a coin...

I would love Apple to actually produce a professional notebook, however Apple is now seemingly incapable as it's solely focused on producing throwaway toys that are near unrepairable, certainly not upgradeable with questionable reliability and built in obsolescence...

Does any windows machine have a touchpad that can rival that of Apple's?

Also, unless you buy a Signature Edition from Microsoft directly, one has to deal with all the bloatware.

I use both platforms but for AutoCAD the Windows OS version is much better than the Mac counterpart which is just a dumbed down version that looks slick. My Windows experience on Win 10 is rock solid and ultra fast as well. No complaints.

I cannot disagree more with your statement, but all good.
Autocad on the PC is a total dinosaur, with the most terrible UX.

I haven't read every post - maybe just the first page. So I dont know all the counter arguments.

FWIW I've had my 2018 MacBook Pro 15" for 6 months and I have had no issues with the keyboard - usage or sticky keys etc. I had a 2013 MBP 13.3" before.

It took maybe a week or 2 to get used to the flatter keys (less travel) and I don't mind them at all. I probably prefer them to 2013 keys. But if I went back to 2013 for 1-2 weeks I might prefer them (but they are smaller but taller keys)...? So either way it's not an issue (so far...).

But I understand we are all different and the keyboard maybe be more prone to issues than before. But for anyone thinking of moving to a 2018 keyboard all I can say is that I haven't had a single issue so far.

I don't use any extra stuff much so I only have one dongle (£7) for usb to usb-c conversion - no big deal.
